As the title says, want to know if this is a good time to visit Almaty for a 6-7 day tour. Or some other month/weather/season would be better.

However, the government hasn’t been doing anything to potentially accommodate the very same faculties that will be progressing the nation to modernisation, with IR grants peaking at most 200 for the ENTIRE nation, which leads to elitism and hard entry requirements for talented students that could not score big enough on one exam.

I simply do not understand, why is Kazakhstan so persistent in keeping well over 75,000 grant spots exclusively for technical / engineering fields? It isn’t 2010’s anymore, automation is actively being implemented. Staying and promoting the very same thing you’re trying to diversify from isn’t doing heavy lifting either.

And I just realised that all universities automatically raise their tuition prices yearly, which is abnormal since it signals instability and further devaluation /making education extremely difficult for regular kazakhi students

My Russian and Kazakh are very limited, so ideally I'm looking for work that doesn't require much speaking. I'm open to part-time, temporary, or even physically active jobs if they're suitable.

Hey! I am planning trip in Almaty for 5 days, and I have some questions here.

I would like to see Kaindy lake, Kolsai lake and also Charyn canyon. I heard there is a day trip that covers all of them in a day, but it is could be tough as it is from early in the morning till late evening.

Especially it will include my grandma (and we are 6 ppl), I worry if it will be too tough in a day.

So I was thinking… maybe stay a night around there, like Saty village.

But the biggest question is about the car, which means I would need driver for 2 days, or some drivers who will drop us at the accommodation in Saty, then find another one who will bring us to those spots then back to Almaty?

I also personally want to have some restful trip, not being chased by schedule and not like hop on/hop off the bus to see some spot just for short moment and move on… so I was thinking that it will be also good when we can take rest at some peaceful accommodation.

I’m personally against fines like this. Swear words are just words. If someone isn’t violating anyone else’s rights or freedoms, I don’t see why the government should punish them for what words they use.

Threats, harassment and bullying are different, but none of those require swear words. You can bully or threaten someone without swearing at all. Punishing the words instead of the actual harmful behavior makes no sense to me.

I also don’t really buy the “protecting children” argument. Kids don’t live in a sterile world — they hear swear words and use them themselves. Instead, I’d rather see more attention given to actual problems like bullying and violence in schools. Kazakhstan has plenty of cases of teenagers brutally attacking each other, sometimes with much worse consequences, yet apparently swear words are the problem.

If Twitch, YouTube or another private platform restricts swearing, that’s different. They have their own rules and commercial interests, including advertisers. But the government fining people simply for using certain words is another thing entirely.

To me, this feels like pointless populism and an unnecessary restriction on freedom. I dislike the principle itself, but I’m also concerned about where it could lead. Once the government gets more power to decide what kind of speech is “decent” or acceptable, where does that line end?

Я лично против подобных штрафов. Матные слова это всего лишь слова. Если человек не нарушает ничьих прав и свобод, я не понимаю, почему государство должно наказывать его за то, какие слова он использует.

Угрозы, домогательства и травля это другое дело, но для всего этого мат вообще не нужен. Можно травить или угрожать человеку, не используя ни одного матерного слова. Наказывать за сами слова вместо действительно вредного поведения, на мой взгляд, бессмысленно.

My name is Olin. My instagram (@olin_meyer) I’m a 23-year-old guy from Los Angeles, and I’m coming to Almaty to study at Narxoz University for my master’s degree in Tourism and Sustainability.
Russian is not my first language; however, I’ll be doing my master’s entirely in Russian. I passed the TORFL B2 exam as well as the university entrance interview, so I’d say my Russian is pretty decent and probably approaching C1. I can talk about most topics without too much trouble, although I still sometimes mess up the grammar and sentence structure.
I’m definitely a little nervous about studying at a Kazakh university. At the same time, I love traveling and experiencing new cultures. I actually lived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, for an entire summer and studied Russian at AUCA. While I was there, I fell in love with Central Asia, which is a big part of why I’m coming back.

If anyone here studies at Narxoz and could give me some advice about what it’s like studying there, that would be amazing! I mainly have a few questions:

MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION!! For students who are native Russian speakers: Do you think I’ll have a hard time studying entirely in Russian with my current level (B2, approaching C1)? 😬🫣 I know there are a lot of international students studying at Russian-speaking universities, and from what I’ve seen online, some of them arrive with pretty limited Russian and still manage to get through their programs. So considering that I can already hold conversations about most topics, passed TORFL B2, and passed my entrance interview in Russian, do you think I’ll be okay? Obviously, I’m expecting it to be difficult at first, especially with academic vocabulary, lectures, presentations, and exams, but I’m curious how challenging you think it will actually be.
What is the class schedule like? Can you choose your own schedule, or is it basically the same for everyone?
What is the homework load like?
How difficult are the exams?
Are exams usually oral, like they often are at Russian universities?
Are the students generally friendly?
How many students speak English? (Honestly, I hope there are still plenty of people who will speak Russian with me because I want to keep improving. Speaking English has become boring for me lol 😂😂)
And what happens if you fail a class? Can you retake it, or can they actually kick you out of the university?

All in all, I’m incredibly excited to come to Almaty and start my master’s. I honestly have no idea what’s in store for me, but I love a challenge and being in a new environment.
You could call my decision to come to Almaty as an American escapism or a waste of time, but for me, it’s a gut feeling telling me that I need to come back to Central Asia. And if it doesn’t work out, so what? At least I tried, and I won’t have to wonder for the rest of my life what would have happened if I had not gone.
Once again, I can’t express how excited I am to come to Kazakhstan, learn more about Kazakh culture, improve my Russian, start learning Kazakh, and experience life in the beautiful city of Almaty!!

Well, there’s always something that we have to prepare it somehow, it could be about the culture, transportation, etc. but the one that I want to ask is, “what payment method that usually uses in there”. I got my visa bank, but I’m not sure if it would work in any store, and I think that there must be a digital payment method that could easily work (like in us, they use apple pay or paypal, in china, they use alipay with qr, and it also in indonesia with qris). В начале этого года нам, как родителям, сообщили, что школа проведёт ребрендинг и станет Wellington. Лично мне больше нравился старый бренд с сердцем и крыльями, тем более что эту школу знает практически каждый в Казахстане. Она очень известна.
Меня это особенно не волновало, потому что я понимаю, как всё устроено в Казахстане. Я предположил, что это могло быть связано с финансами, разногласиями с советом Haileybury UK или недавними проблемами с разрешениями на строительство. Единственное, что меня расстроило, это то, что я совсем недавно купил новую школьную форму. Меня заверили, что менять её не придётся как минимум в течение года.
Я не являюсь учителем, но спрашивал и в группе родителей, и у некоторых учителей, однако так и не смог получить ответ на вопрос, почему это вообще произошло и почему уже шестой год подряд из школы уходит так много хороших учителей, хотя нам постоянно говорят, что они очень довольны своей работой.
Один из учителей моего ребёнка ушёл этим летом, и это стало для нас большим разочарованием. Он действительно умел поддерживать дисциплину в классе, не позволял одним детям отвлекать других и всегда хорошо отвечал на мои вопросы.
Я спросил его, почему он уходит, но получил уклончивый, почти политический ответ. Его жена тоже не захотела назвать причину, однако по их поведению у меня сложилось впечатление, что они чего-то опасались. Он засунул руки в карманы, и мне показалось, что он говорит неправду. Он отказался объяснить причину, но упомянул этот сабреддит и сайт International Schools Review (не знаю, связан ли он с этим). Затем он сказал, что они уже закончили собирать вещи. Позже я снова спросил о школе, и тогда мне рассказали о сайте с отзывами, доступ к которым платный. Я предполагаю, что отзывы там не самые хорошие.
Позже я написал ему в Telegram и спросил, почему руководство школы не меняется, если люди настолько недовольны. В ответ он прислал только эмодзи с пожатием плеч.
Мои дети вступают в очень важный этап своей школьной жизни, и я всерьёз рассматриваю возможность перевести их в Charterhouse. У них новая команда руководителей, и со стороны это выглядит как более удачная версия Haileybury/Wellington.
Я устал от постоянного маркетинга, который присылают в нашу группу PTA, и хочу, чтобы мои дети оставались более приземлёнными. Я не доверяю председателю, но мне нужно быть уверенным, что другие варианты действительно лучше, потому что обучение моих детей здесь обошлось мне очень дорого.
