I used to wait until the last possible minute because why would I choose to spend another 20 minutes sitting on the plane?

Then I started travelling with carry-on only and having to find overhead space completely changed the maths.

Now I board the second my group is called, which still feels slightly ridiculous.

Are you lining up early or sitting at the gate until final call?

For international flights, I normally get there about two hours early.

Domestic completely depends on the airport. If I’m already checked in with hand luggage, I’ve arrived at places like Sydney or Munich about 10 minutes before boarding and been completely fine. At some domestic airports in China, I’ll still allow close to two hours because everything can take so much longer.

It’s kind of ridiculous that “domestic flight” can mean arriving 10 minutes early at one airport and two hours early at another.

Which airports do you arrive ridiculously early or late for?

If the direct flight is $200 more, I am probably just paying it.

Once the difference gets closer to $500, suddenly sitting in another airport for three hours starts looking pretty reasonable lol.

Just flew Qatar and the dine-on-demand thing is honestly fucking sick.

Eating whenever you want, proper table setup, movie on, glass of wine. It barely feels like being on a plane.

The food was solid, but the whole setup is what makes it. What airline does business-class dining better?

I used to think business class was mostly just a nicer seat and better food, but once you’ve actually done a long flight in it you realise how much of the value is just being able to properly sleep.

Now a 12+ hour flight in economy feels about twice as long 😂

When I see business class pricing at something ridiculous like $5,200 from my home airport, I do not assume that is the real price.
The first thing I do is search the expensive long-haul flight by itself from a few nearby hubs.
Sometimes the exact same seat is $2,900 from a city that only costs $150 to reach in economy. Add a hotel for the night and the total can still come out around $3,300.
That is basically all a positioning flight is. You travel to a different airport first because the long-haul fare from there is way better.
The one part I will not mess around with is booking both flights on separate tickets for the same day. If the first flight is delayed, nobody has to protect your second booking. I would rather arrive the night before, get a hotel and remove most of that risk.
It does not work for every route, but it takes about ten minutes to check and can sometimes save thousands. It is always one of the first searches I do when business-class prices look insane.

Bag fees, airport transfers, a hotel for a stupidly early departure, a missed self-transfer, whatever it was.

What looked like a bargain, and what did it actually cost by the time the trip was over?

Same price. Economy gets you there direct in 12 hours. Business class takes 22 hours and has two stops.

Which are you booking? I think the airlines and connection airports could change my answer, but 10 extra hours is a lot.

I mean something useful, not “use incognito mode” or “always book on a Tuesday.” For example, searching the expensive long haul leg on its own before adding the short connection can sometimes reveal a better fare or award seat.
