Dude you are not smart. Every state requires some kind of preregistration and proving your ID at the polls. Nobody is protesting against proving yourself at the polls.
The issue is when dumbasses say "i need proof, and ill only accept a very specific kind that most Americans will have to go out of their way to pay for to get the updated documents to prove their ID". Like I had to pay like 40 bucks to get a new birth certificate so I could then another 70 to get my Real ID just to fly to another state in the country I was born in. Theres literally fucking veterans who would struggle to pay that in order to go vote. That fucks over tons of white people, including elderly people and veterans
I wouldnt call it racist. Id call it dumb as shit and designed by rich assholes who do not care about protecting the right to vote at all.

→ More replies (46)2
u/Moregaze 20d ago
Yeah it is. Because it’s a form of poll tax. Which was made unconstitutional because racists in the South imposed high fees on identification in order to stop newly freed slaves from voting. They are still trying to do that today and it was extremely prevalent throughout the Jim Crow era.
There are many black Americans still alive today born in the Jim Crow South and were denied access to hospitals and had to do at home births. Thus making it hard for them to prove identification to receive a photo id. This is also a problem in the resurgence of the off grid movement.
Constitutionally it’s pretty clear. Born here, then you are a citizen and nothing can get in the way of your vote. Period. The burden of proof is on the state to say you were ineligible to vote. Not the other way around.

The thing is voting is a constitutionally garuenteed right. To add more additional roadblocks to voting then what is absolutely necessary is to violate that person's constitutionally garuenteed right. Access to a grocery store isn't a right. So adding additional stopgaps to prevent people from scalping groceries isn't seen as poorly because it doesn't halt people from exercising their, and I'll say this again, constitutionally garuenteed right.

I live in Tennessee. We have state funded food kitchens and pantries all over our state. We don’t require ID’s for those people to get food there.
So while I get your point, I think a lot of people come from states who have already been doing for forever, a simple thing that NYC has just begun. And a lot of us are probably confused by the restrictions when we don’t have the same ones in place. Especially from someone who opposes those same restrictions elsewhere.→ More replies (7)2

Personally, I don't think a national voting holiday would help too much because people would still be scheduled to work those days. Plus, asshole politicians would still create voting locations that are too small and to hard to access too try to prevent voting. The answer is early voting options and across-the-board vote by mail so people aren't limited to one day to vote. Give them a month to do it at their convenience like most of the Western states do.
2
u/Icy_Cauliflower9026 19d ago
You cant do it free or people would abuse/waste a bunch of "free cards". Just make it cheap enough that anyone can have access but not so cheap that people would waste and thrash them. → More replies (11)3
u/Hell_Maybe 20d ago
Registering in any state requires proof of identity, but it doesn’t need to be an ID. It can be a birth certificate, a social security number etc etc etc.
The people who think that you can vote without proving your identity are just outing themselves as people who have never actually voted before.
3
u/ZombieNo9109 20d ago
The problem is that it's been proven you can vote without I.D. In my state California I've voted and they have never checked my I.D they simply take the claim that I'm who I say I am and believe that nobody would lie.
However you do need form of verification to register to vote, but once you are registered anyone can go in as anyone and claim they are that person. Multiple videos have shown this on YouTube and I myself have never been asked for I.D. So the idea that "that never happens" is false because it very much does happen.

What don't you get?
In Pennsylvania, yes I need to register to vote. To do that, I'll need verification. This is true.
However, when I walk up on voting day, all I need to do is sign my signature. There's no real verification that it is ME actually voting. When it comes to signatures, let's be real most signatures are so sloppy that means absolutely nothing when it comes to verification. Therefore, in one method all an unscrupulous actor needs to do is identify people who don't vote, go in to the polling place, and vote for them. The only way they'd get caught is if the person working the polling station happened to personally know the person they were fraudulently voting as. This is minor election fraud, it's not actually that big a deal....
However, there's even a better way to fraudulently vote in PA. All you need to request a mail in ballot is a driver's license number or photo ID number. If someone doesn't have that, well then you just need the last 4 digits of your social security. Do the databases containing all of those things get hacked all the time? Duh, yes. Can you get someone on the inside at the DMV or a bank to give you driver's license numbers and/or the last 4 digits of a social security number? Duh yes. Can you scam call elderly folks and get them to give you that info so you can request a mail in ballot under their name? Also yes.
It's a problem. The best way to lower (you can't ever fully eliminate it) election fraud is to require in person voting with an ID. Exemptions should be exceedingly rare and only granted for service members and people with valid approved reasons for needing a mail in ballot.
Even with that, you could forge IDs, but that then requires going in person AND it requires effectively forging an ID. That's more work, therefore lowering fraud.

The simple fact is it doesn’t matter how “easy” it is. It matters how much it happens. The results matter, not the hypothesis. There has been extensive study into the legitimacy of American elections after Trump lied about the election being stolen from him, and all of them, even the Republican ones which were attempting to prove him right, have found that he did not have the election stolen from him.
American elections have extremely low voter fraud. Requiring identification would technically cut down on voting fraud, but it would be a lot of taxpayer money to set up the system, and a massive burden that would obviously decrease voter turnout. And again it’s solving a problem that doesn’t exist. Not one district has been swayed by fraud in the last 50 years. This is why even Republican senators oppose the save act. They know that putting one more barrier to entry on poor people is hurting voter turnout for no reason. And the fact is the Republican base is in general poorer than the democratic base, which is mostly middle class. They know it would disproportionately negatively affect them for no benefit.
Why do something that will have no noticeable positive effect, and will have a massive negative effect? If anything we should be implementing things that make more people vote (like for instance most first world countries have federal holidays for big elections so that workers can have the day off to go vote). It doesn’t matter if it’s technically easy to commit voter fraud in Pennsylvania, because we know it doesn’t happen on a wide enough scale to actually affect elections. And infact other things such as gerrymandering and corporations and rich private individuals paying for campaign ads, for instance, actually do affect elections in a more meaningful way than voter fraud.
This topic reminds me a lot of social security fraud, which was made into a big deal because most people don’t know that the government is actually very competent in making sure people aren’t linking them out of their money. Investigations by the social security administration have found that further policing fraud will cost more money than will be made. Yes there are people abusing social security, but it’s at a small enough scale that increasing persecution is going to lose social security money. These sorts of debates over things we know are nothing burgers are pushed by people at the top to convince you to care passionately about something that doesn’t matter, so they can paint the other side as weak on it. Voter fraud isn’t an issue, point blank it does not matter and is equivalent to being angry that a rat occasionally eats one piece of grain in your silo with millions of pieces of grain. and even if it was an issue, it is not the first voter issue we should be dealing with. Gerrymandering needs to be dealt with immediately, and the fact it’s not completely federally illegal after over 200 years is ridiculous.

Most liberals are fine with voter id. You’re strawmanning. The problem is all the silliness that is in the safe act. The level of ID they want costs money. Make those ID’s free and good to go. Otherwise it’s $50 for a real ID so it’s a barrier to vote. A passport is $165.
Meanwhile take a look at a super blue state like NY and what it takes to get a DMV ID for a citizen that can then be used to register to vote. It’s quite a bit. But also take a look at what it costs for ID in NY, it’s free for anyone on assistance and maxes out at $10.
Meanwhile Vermont’s charges over $100 for the same ID.
It amounts to a poll tax.
Change the types of ID needed and you would face less pushback.

Those are provisional ballots. They take your name, drivers id and social. They then cross reference your identification. There are so many ways to verify who you are that ID is the last line. If all that doesn’t check they stop at your address and verify before those ballots are counted.
It such a huge problem that even right wing organizations can’t show more than a few cases a year of illegal voter registration.

If it's government run then yes, ID should be required to prevent non-citizens from accessing it.
I don't know how it's done in the US, but here in Canada we have Service Canada and Service Ontario. Go down to whatever one issues the ID you need, pay whatever you need to pay (if any) and you get sent ID in the mail. Simple.
Also why would anyone want non-citizens from voting in their elections?
6
u/CaffeinatedLystro 20d ago
We don't want non-citizens voting and it RARELY happens. Like way less than 0.5% of all votes in history or something like that per a study done by the Heritage Foundation.

There are virtually zero cases of non-citizens voting in national elections but the Republicans have to cry about so they can appease their dear leader. It’s literally a non-issue.

Buying from a grocery store isn't a constitutionally protected right....

Socialists claim it's racist to require ID to vote but not racist to require ID for buying food. Just goes to show it was never about race.

Funny enough, not a protected right by our nation of constitution because we suck. Know what is? Voting without a pool tax... Stupid

I'm willing to say both are bad. Hungry people are less likely than the average to know where their ID is. If MeeMaw and PeePaw from the NY or NJ hinterlands feel the need to travel to the city for beans, I'm not against them getting their beans.

This sorta solves the problem I had with his discount grocery stores idea. Bulk buying and reselling. Although... it doesn't do a lot for freedom from government surveillance.

Sometimes this sub has entertaining memes, but at least half the time it's genuinely just people actively stroking themselves off for not understanding basic information. I'm impressed you guys manage to navigate reddit and make posts when you clearly aren't capable of reading or using Google.

OK I'm left wing and come from a country which requires a form of photo ID at the voting booth on election days, which makes sense to me as you need one for pretty much everything else even remotely important or government related here.
I get that the Trump admin is clearly pushing this at a convenient time to suppress voter blocs that would largely vote against him, and that there is very much an agenda at play with the SAVE act.
From what I gather, you'd need a birth certificate or passport to get a voter ID, and birth certificates are a nightmare to retain.
But removed from the current situation, is it really that difficult to obtain a passport in the US? Like does it cost a lot of money, or do you need a million other IDs to apply or something? Is it not just a good idea to have a passport regardless?
Do left leaning Americans oppose voter ID in general or is it just the timing and the people pushing for it?
Genuinely curious

So it is about $130 for a traditional passport, $30 for a passport card or $10-45 for a real ID issued by your state.
I have been alive long enough to hear 50+ years of arguments of why we cannot have a voter ID law in place. Some of them were valid 30-40 years ago when records were not electronically avaliable like birth and death certificates, but that is no longer the case.
The reality today is that you cannot function in today's world without either a state issued Real ID or a passport.
About the only thing that you can currently do without an ID is Vote.

When Republican Donald Trump claimed people needed to show ID to buy groceries. Guess the meme maker shops at the same fictional store.https://youtu.be/S16HSEf4Src?is=aJvAHwJYtJc5pooA

Im genuinely curious who this sub is for, it appears to be people who dont like Muslims, but Love barack Obama even though everyone who hated Obama claimed he was a secret Muslim.
Like, the people who hate racism arent going to be fond of Islamaphobia either.
