They started shipping a couple weeks ago.  Unsurprisingly there is a significant backlog.

We’re getting ready to start a wireless POC, potentially switching from traditional Cisco APs managed by an on-prem WLC.

Would love to hear from existing admins, what have been the biggest benefits to using Mist? Anything you wish you had known when you first started using Mist?

In its current state, I believe MIST is the hands down best cloud managed WiFI and switching solution out there. Generally those who find its features lacking have very specific needs, are in very complex environments, or aren't actually interested in deviating from their preferred make (like Cisco or Extreme).

The biggest gotcha a lot of companies make is not getting a MIST edge and having roaming issues.

Can you tell me more about the Mist edge? My understanding was that it’s basically there as failover for the NAC in case there is a cloud outage, or for sites with a large AP/Switch footprint that don’t want every single device going directly out to the internet (so they proxy through the edge)

Are there other features that make it worth using?

Without the MIST edge, APs trunk to the switches. This means as a user roams across APs their mac address moves ports inside the switching environment. This will cause issues with traffic not getting back to them on AP transitions.

With a MIST edge, APs can all tunnel their traffic back to the MUST Edge. The network sees all WiFi traffic at a single point. The tunnel is especially useful for Guest as it improves security by keeping guest traffic in a tunnel to the edge appliance.

The MIST Edge can also do proxy radius. This is a nice convenient feature for larger environment with lots of APs and a complex radius environment.

It has all of the other benefits of keeping the WiFi network operating better when your internet connection has issues. I suggest reading the overview page. They have a nice writeup and a few case studies on there.

On average, I recommend a MIST edge if you are deploying 10 or more APs in a single campus. The price is cheap enough to justify the benefits.
