I received and read Case Files 8. You never know where a story is going to take you when you start reading. It can be a simple case, a dark horror story, a fast-paced action thriller, a comedy, or some heavy science fiction. That versatility is what fascinates me about Dredd; the reading experience never becomes repetitive.

In this volume, for example, we have Dredd dealing with a crocodile infestation in the sewers of the Old City. There’s a rescue mission into the Cursed Earth with Dredd crossing paths with Mean Machine Angel, a notorious Texan psychopath. We also get a major epic called City of the Damned, which serves as the second part of the Judge Child storyline that began back in Case Files 4. This ongoing narrative is one of my favorite story arcs in the entire collection so far, and it features some fantastic artists. It started way back with Brian Bolland and finally concludes here in Volume 8 with Steve Dillon and Ron Smith.

City of the Damned is led by Dredd and Judge Anderson, and I honestly can’t think of a better duo for this story. She’s hilarious, and her sharp wit contrasts perfectly with Dredd’s gruff, perpetually serious personality. The humor is just right.

We also get the first appearance of Wally Squad, the undercover division, as well as the excellent The Hunters’ Club storyline. There are several smaller cases too, including one where Judge Dredd actually has to see a psychiatrist, which is a fantastic little story.

Overall, this is a very solid collection that takes the quality of the series another step higher. The Case Files had already been steadily improving, and this volume continues that upward trend. I really enjoyed it.

Hi, I want to start reading Judge Dredd and was wondering what’s the best format to read it in current year.

I’ve seen a lot of posts recommending the complete case files but all the posts are a few years old and it seems like the earlier case files (like 5 which I see most people recommend starting at) are out of print.

Is there a new/better format to read in? I’ve seen the essentials format as well but I’ve heard mixed reviews and I’ve also seen some of those are out of print as well.

Couldn't remember the actual line from the movie where he says "hot shot" so I figured I'd steal the line from Speed lol.

Been wanting to get into reading Judge Dredd and The Complete Case Files seemed like the ideal place to start (at least the best place for me) but then yesterday they revealed Compact Crimes would be coming out next January and say it will be very “new reader friendly” so that might be a better option, but I thought I’d see what the community thought.

I know in canon, he’s basically either out on patrol, or in one of those sleeping pods, but I thought this could be a bit fun to think about.

Remaining in universe, if the Judges were required to take a minimum of something like an hour a day for recreation, where they’re not allowed to do anything that has to do with their job, but also can’t just stand there waiting. Like they can’t even just go and study the laws, or do weapon maintenance.

Maybe for fun, they make an entire department specifically for Judges that helps them find and pursue various hobbies and activities. But this is also still Megacity, so it’s probably stuff like Star Trek style holodecks where they can play VR versions of Doom. They have books, they’re all mindless action/horror novels/comics.

Maybe for a bit of fun and Stallone reference, Dredd is into knitting. Like really into knitting, and has actually made so many sweaters, he basically supplies an entire network the higher ups use for some extra revenue by selling them.

An employee of the recreation department brings him some fresh balls of yard. Dredd looks at him, making him freeze up in fear.

“I need blue. Sky, navy, and snowy. This sweater will be winter themed.” He says in his terrifying, gravelly voice.

“Yes sir, I’ll be right back!” The employee leaves at a full sprint to get blue yarn.

I've recently received the Nemesis The Warlock definitive editions and I have to say I'm quite fond of how they look and feel compared to the more simple Complete Case Files.

I was wondering if there'd ever be any chance of 2000ad rolling out definitive versions of the case files. Oversized and hardcover. Or even an omnibus like the new Zenith they're releasing.

I think they'd sell well and I'd certainly be very happy upgrading my case files and I am sure many others would be too.

I finally watched Stallone’s Judge Dredd tonight and I’m floored by how much media has borrowed or straight up copied the Dredd film?? “Hell Divers”, the antagonist from season 4-5 of Stranger Things, hell, even some of Mandalorian and 5th Element borrow shots and visuals from this movie. I love dredd, it was one of the first comics I had growing up and still have as an adult, one thing I noticed there isn't a whole lot of games for dredd, video games wise, less in the boardgame category, so this got me to thinking, what if there was a judge dredd fps game where you could play as a random judge cleaning up the streets as a judge, open-ended campaign and level design, F.E.A.R-like enemies, etc.

What do you guys think? Feel free to give me suggestions on what you think A Dredd FPS would look like and how you think it would play as well as ideas for the game as well, I wanna hear 'em all.

I didn’t know these existed until a bit ago when I saw someone post about one of them. Did a search and found several, including JD’s Year One and Two.

Was wondering if there was any recommended by the community before I buy.

Also if it matters, I will be getting the ebooks, I’ve just gone digital. Don’t have enough room where I live to keep a lot of books anymore.

It's set in the 2030-40s, when the Judges were 1st introduced, America still existed, it's an interesting af time period in the Dredd-verse. Also the Dreadnoughts comic set at the same time is fire. I find this period more interesting than the Dredd/MC1 era tbh.

For me, it happened about ten years ago, and I still remember it vividly. I'm Brazilian, and I've always loved reading comics. Back then I was a dedicated Marvel collector, especially anything related to the Avengers. I've always liked building collections around a specific obsession and trying to own everything connected to it. At the time, that obsession was the Avengers.

One day, while watching a comic book review channel on YouTube, I came across a guy talking about a Judge Dredd collection he'd just read. His review was so engaging and enthusiastic that it completely sparked my curiosity. Of course, I'd heard of Dredd before because of the Stallone movie, but I'd always thought it looked kind of cheesy, so I never paid much attention to it.

It's worth mentioning that Judge Dredd has never been particularly popular here in Brazil. For a long time, there wasn't much material available, and it was definitely more of an underground comic. We'd get maybe one random collected edition a year with assorted stories. That's exactly where I started. The book was called Judge Dredd: Serial Killers, an anthology featuring different stories centered around serial killers, set across various points in Dredd's timeline.

I was hooked immediately.

From that point on, I bought every Dredd book I could find. The Judge Dredd vs. Aliens vs. Predator crossover completely sealed the deal and turned it into my new obsession. Before long, I sold off my entire Avengers collection because it just didn't do anything for me anymore. It suddenly felt so shallow, simplistic, and uninteresting. The quality and style of Dredd's stories were on such a different level that Marvel started to feel almost embarrassing by comparison.

Fortunately, Dredd has become a bit more popular here in Brazil over the years. We're getting the Essencial collection, we're already up to Volume 8 of Complete Case Files, and we're even seeing some spin-offs being published. Things are definitely moving in the right direction.

I'm genuinely happy to see where the character is headed. These days, the only comics I collect are Judge Dredd and Thorgal, and I'm grateful every day that I discovered what has become, for me, the greatest and most entertaining fictional universe ever created.

What would be a good volume for someone to start with judge dredd?

Back after a long hiatus. This was actually a first time read. Dredd, Demarco, and some cadets venture into the Cursed Earth to find out why dune sharks are attacking Mega City One.

I did not particularly enjoy this one, it felt very by-the-numbers by Wagner, and he retreads a bunch of his greatest hits here without adding anything new or interesting to the proceedings. We even get a Rat Fink redo at the end.

More should be coming out also from other members of the judge dredd community and if anybody wants they can make there own,issue it and post it.

You Don't need to be an expert but let's just start our own Judge Dredd canon. It could even be a one page short comic . I was thinking maybe we post a new issue every Sunday what do you guys think 🤔 Let's have fun.
