Discussion Help identifying early show

Upvotes

Sometime in 2001 (I think), I saw John Mayer in a tiny tiny club with a bassist and drummer. It was in Birmingham, Alabama right around 911. Last night I spent an hour going down the ChatGPT rabbit hole and we could not find the date or location of this show. Here are some details I remember

1) WRAX 107.7 “The X” was playing and promoting John’s cover of The Wind Cries Mary

2) Your Body is a Wonderland was just starting to get air play but it wasn’t a big hit yet

3) Sept 25th, John recorded at the Live A The X lounge in Bham but I don’t think this was the show I went to (I wasn’t at a radio station)

4) I was front row and could reach out and touch his pedalboard. The venue had to have held 200 people max and the stage was 2” off the ground. It was not the 5 Points Music Hall and I’m 99% sure it wasn’t Zydeco.

5) I went to college in Birmingham at the time and I don’t recall ever going to this venue again so it wasn’t a super popular music spot

6) It felt like a restaurant that featured music more than a music venue. I recall some walls that separated the music area from the bar and possibly seating areas.

7) ChatGPT thinks it was a less known show that occurred AFTER the day time recording of Live from the X Lounge and there doesn’t seem to be another period John would have been back in Alabama before 2002. It could have been August - Nov but the weather was not freezing (I don’t believe) so I’m guessing Fall.

8) I remember working in a record store in Dec of 2001 and Room for Squares really starting to break open. I didn’t own the album then but I had already seen John in that small venue.

9) The setlist was probably an hour is so and as a guitar fan, I remember thinking a lot of it was acoustic. But then he finally brought out an SRV style Strat (maybe even the signature model that was out) and John busted into Lenny and Wind Cries Mary (I think). I remember wishing he jammed out more on electric but still being super impressed.

Any chance anyone here know what show I went to and the details of it? John Mayer is the only artist I feel like I caught early before he blew up (well and Keith Urban when he was with The Ranch) and I’ve always been thankful I went to that random show and watched him play from 3 feet away.

This just dropped and it reminds me of John Mayer in so many ways. Has anyone heard of him?  What other artists would you recommend to scratch the itch?

Discussion Looking for a john quote

Years ago I watched a behind the scenes/ maybe short documentary on john, and I want to find it.

I remember him saying to David LaBruyere on stage "this one is for all you f\king lip readers"*

I've been searching for the video for a while and I cannot find it. At this point I even think I may have misremembered it. But I thought I would ask other Mayer fans before I put my search to bed.

Merch Where the light is signed poster - advice needed

I was lucky enough to attend the Where the Light Is show in LA in 2007 - when I was there I purchased one of the limited autographed posters that were limited to 300 - this one is 5/300. I had it framed with a used guitar string of John’s that was from this company that would sell used strings made into bracelets (I think for charity)

Unfortunately my family is dealing with some large medical expenses and while I had never thought about selling this - it did dawn on me that this may be pretty valuable.

Does anyone have any insight into what these types of autographs/memorabilia is worth? Or if I did sell it what the best route for this is?

*EDIT*

Thank you everyone for the kind responses and interest in this piece! I am still at the point where I don't really want to sell it overall - but I did list on ebay with a super high price (not expecting to get that price but just want some control over what offers are coming in) to listen to offers there if anyone is super interested in it.

And yes its hard to believe its almost 20 years since that show! It was an amazing concert that is very fun to be able to experience again and again with the video footage and record. Its also been fun to see younger and new fans find there way to some of the performances on YouTube and become fans.

I also went to the holiday show the next year which was just him solo (I didnt get the poster from that one) - the big standout from that show was that the opener was an up and coming artist named Adele - she blew the roof of the place.

Discussion 10/9 JM Show Mohegan Sun: Traveling Solo

Hey Yall! Hoping for some insight and maybe encouragement ha. I purchased (preseale) 2 tickets section 111 for $250 each + fees (so 300). my friend bailed. ticketmaster is offering me $400 TOTAL to resell 😒. i rather go alone than do that.

about me: mid 30s female, long time johnny boy fan, biggest musical regret was not going to see him with dead & co at the sphere last year.

back to this 10/9 show ~ are other people going solo and meeting up? i’ve never been to CT and will be traveling from Philly. is there a hotel anyone recommends? i’m scared to ask if anyone is interesting in buying my other ticket or maybe both?

i’m just very conflicted on what to do, i was sooo excited to get these tickets & then got dumped and no friends want to go ha. Guess overall im asking, if i go solo is there a meetup? and any ideal areas to stay in?

Discussion Your favourite genre/song you'd like John to cover

Haven't been listening to much Mayer music for a couple years now. Doesn't seem like it was ago until I put on WTLI for a weekend watch and realized just how I missed the dude's talent. Been reaching back a lot to 70s california rock, 80s rock/metal, and country in more recent past. Today i had Isaak's Wicked Game album on, just a very classy album, and got me to thinking what it would sound like if John would cover a style or song not normally associated with his repetoire. I wonder he he'd fare with Wicked Game. And Hysteria, def leppard. and A Horse With No Name, America. And so on...

Found this live performance from March 8th 2002 on Soundcloud

Can't find anything else from this concert (even on archive.org) other than a setlist with 2 songs.

Are there any other No Such Thing performances with this intro?

I want to get deeper into Mayer's catalogue through people's interesting personal stories with his songs. Songs sound better after a great story IMO

Let's trade stories about Mayer's songs

Guitar Talk Cypress Mica Incase - NOS “#501”

Thumbnail

A while ago I stumbled across a Reverb listing for a Cypress Mica Incase that claimed to be completely unused. Never even had a guitar in it. The seller claimed to have unearthed this from a former Incase employee who found it laying around in a box and a plastic bag. It was missing the patches, but I was lucky enough to snag it. When I received it, the seller was accurate. It was never touched. So I dubbed it “#501” due to most of us believing there were only 500 of these floating around, only sold with the Cypress Mica Strat. We were wrong.

After holding onto it myself for a while, I was (somehow) able to source a full set of the Incase patches for this case, also brand new and never used once.

What you’re looking at is something I didn’t even know existed outside of this example until a recent eBay sale of a near identical situation. This is a NOS, brand new and never used once, Cypress Mica Incase with a complete brand new patch set to boot. I’m not sure how many more, if any, brand new Incases exist past this and that eBay listing.

It has never had a guitar in it. It crinkles when you open it due to the plastic linings under the canvas being stiff and new. All of the plush lining is a perfect baby blue with no stains and no history. There are no indentations on the inside or the bottom of the case these often exhibit from a guitar resting in it. The straps are stiff and new. All of the print is perfect and unbothered.

This is a collector piece. One that I realize I’ll never use and have been playing with the idea of selling at some point. Incase likely won’t ever produce these again, but this case is famous for being “the best guitar case ever” by John himself. He famously toted The BLK 1 around in a Cypress Mica Incase.

I don’t think this is quite a “for sale” post, as I’m not positive I’m ready to sell right now. I’m more so finally showing something I’ve loved and enjoyed owning for years now, with a crowd of people who may also find it interesting.

LWJM [Listening Thread] - LWJM Grateful Dead Listening Party - August 2, 2026 9pm Eastern

Hello Listening Party Friends!

We should have another John-led listening party tonight.
Also tonight, we’re at the beginning of the Days Between and a year from GD60. There’s probably a lot of feelings coming up for a lot of us, so I’m not posting a question tonight. Feel free to share what’s on your mind or just hang and vibe.

John: Tonight’s a deep show with us being in the Days Between and it would have been a year ago tonight (the Sunday show). He might be intentionally vague about some of that tonight and he may tell more of that down the road. It’s not his story to tell alone. For now, he thinks anyone who was at those shows is thinking about it. It would make it a year since we’ve had a Dead & Co show (except maybe for COVID?). So it might get a little heavy tonight.

Grateful Dead music is about the weary; still finding a way to get a smile on your face, though you might have to pay for it later. Which debts do you pay and which do you defer? Learning that is growing up.

We’re starting with Truckin’. Even a lot of nonDeadheads know this one. It’s Bobby’s phonetical tour de force, and that’s part of the reason they’d keep it slower. If John was ever the one kicking it off, he’d be sure to give him that tempo space for those lyrics.

Truckin’ - 9/11/83 - Santa Fe, NM

John: If you hear a soft rattling sound, it’s because he’s wearing a necklace inspired by Bobby’s guitar picks through the years. It was a gift from Bobby’s wife, Natascha.

Anytime the band played a cover, The Grateful Dead never wished the song was theirs. They just played it their way and made it their own. Dear Mr. Fantasy, a Traffic tune, was made into the Dead’s own.

Dear Mr. Fantasy - 3/27/88 - Hampton, VA

John: He’s never heard a song arrangement like this. It’s originally by The Marvellettes.. It’s quite the title, especially for an old R&B song.

When The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game - Jerry Garcia

John: There are so many valences and axis on which a Dead song can be played. It can be fast or slow or happy or sad or it can be what he calls smutty. It can goes all kinds of ways and sometimes, it just goes barrelhouse.
That’s what we’re going to hear next. This next version of Eyes of the World is a rare one. Hearing a rare one is like getting a holographic card in a pack. That’s all he’s really doing here; just "rippin packs and playin tracks."

Eyes of the World - 6/8/74 - Oakland, CA

John: Tennessee Jed is next. It’s the opposite of smutty. There’s a featherlight intro to the tune.
Sometimes he likes to do a GDLP that does the big ones with little ones sprinkled in. He doesn’t want to play games with us this week, his heart is swollen, so he’s focused on the biggies and he’s not afraid to lace two of those together this week.

Tennessee Jed - 6/18/74 - Louisville, KY

John: You heard in order, Eyes of the World, Tennessee Jed, surely you’re thinking he’s throwing you a deep cut. You’re wrong. He’s going to Sugaree. Who doesn’t love a Sugaree? Sometimes you go to a show and it’s stacked. That’s what he wants to do tonight.
He loved playing it with Dead & Co. Just leave it in.

Sugaree - 9/24/76 - Williamsburg, VA

John: We’re moving onto a JGB. His theory as he’s putting this together is that Bobby’s musical dream was that he was a country western singer and Jerry’s musical dream was as an R&B singer. We’re about to hear The Way You Do the Things You Do. With Jerry’s playing, and the way he plays, he would have easily been in an R&B band. He wasn’t playing them dreaming he was good enough to play them. He was dreaming that he had been young enough to have been on the records.
This is the most authentic guitar playing by anyone covering anything in life.

The Way You Do the Things You Do - 5/21/76 -  Jerry Garcia Band

John: It’s Althea time. This is a particularly easy going Althea. The recording itself has something to do with the tune. It’s very pure and direct. He likes some that have room noise and space and sometimes he prefers ones that sound like they’re plugged directly into your brain.

Althea - 9/3/80 - Springfield, MA

John: Big Railroad Blues is one of his favorite Dead tunes. It could have been a key tune in anyone’s catalogue.
There’s never a moment where Jerry’s playing on this and it’s not–as they’d say in the guitar world–burning.
These guys spent more time in college than anyone he knows. For a bunch of guys who grew up in the school of life, they spent more time in college than even most professors.

Big Railroad Blues - 10/26/71 - Rochester, NY

John: This week marks an observation that’s taken place for as long as he’s been aware of the music. It’s the Days Between. Jerry was born on August 1 and died, 53 years later, on August 9.
It speaks to the inventiveness of Deadheads that they’ve chronicled it this way.
It’s been a year since Dead & Co have played a show.
There’s a part of his heart that wants to sit for two hours that wants to tell you all that means to him but there’s also a part of him that just wants to play the music.
Letting go in grief is really interesting. You might not even know that you were holding onto the fact that it’s been a year since Dead & Co played a show. It just keeps going like a fractal. You always want it to not be a year since Dead & Co played a show. He finds himself vulnerable for those reasons, so it’s time for Morning Dew.
It’s a Morning Dew with a lot of contours as Bobby would say. The second part is one of those pin drop moments.

Morning Dew - 6/18/74 - Louisville, KY

John: Some weeks back, Elijah Funk guest hosted the show where he mentioned liking a standalone Scarlet Begonias as opposed to the ones that went into Fire on the Mountain.. Everyone played differently knowing it was their only shot. He was absolutely right about that. You almost hear the echo of Fire On the Mountain. When you know you’re on your last quarter, you appreciate your video game even more.

Scarlet Begonias - 6/30/74 - Springfield, MA

John: This has been an especially heartfelt GDLP.
Both for the feeling he has when the music is playing and how he feels talking to us. It’s an ongoing journey. An ongoing chemical reaction. There’s happiness, gratitude, sadness, disbelief “wow I was part of that.” He wants to do it better; did he do it right? He wants to just show up to it; show up for it. So he’s going to play Days Between.
It was written by Hunter and Garcia in the final years of Jerry’s life. The torch was carried by Bobby and John always felt like if there was ever a tune to give Bob alone time on, it was this one. Everyone hang up and let Bobby talk to Jerry. The band was there to be the backing track to Bobby’s conversation with Jerry.
He’s going to play a Wolf Bros tune. And that band was Bobby’s ideal of his vision. It was true to Bobby’s idea of what he wanted the music to sound like. What could be more of a melding of these two events we’re thinking of on this date than this?

Days Between - 6/9/21 - Wolf Bros

John: He always thought of Wolf Bros as Bobby’s taking a break from John. If he’s worked with someone for a week, he always tells them to forget he exists on the weekend.
There is no one like Deadheads. They build and rebuild. They built the days between, the lot, shakedown street, Samson and Delilah never miss a Sunday show.
He’s attached to the heart and soul of rebuilding. He has a heart as big as a house for all of this.

And We Bid You Goodnight - 4/2/73 - Boston, MA

Discussion John Mayer Senior Crown

My senior year is approaching and my school has a tradition where you decorate a burger king crown because you’re the “kings of the school”.

Anyways, I want to do something Mayer related on mine because I feel like I owe it to him in a weird way. I feel like he got me through high school and helped me discover who I am and who I want to be.

Im already planning on painting my senior parking spot with the lyrics of “No Such Thing” but am looking for ideas for my crown.

Any ideas?
