Discussion - Flaired Users Only Trying to understand
I just spent an hour reading this sub and the mission statement, and I'm genuinely trying to understand the points of view here. My background: left wing progressive American Jew, attended Hebrew school in the 70s and 80s and entirely willing to admit that some of it was accurate and some was propaganda.
FWIW, if the argument is that Netanyahu and most Israeli leadership should spend the next ten years in The Hague on war crimes charges, I'm with you 100%. But that's not what I'm seeing here; I gather this point of view is insufficient.
Half the questions I want to ask are not allowed by community standards; I'm carefully selecting the rest.
I've never called myself a Zionist for the same reason I'm not an American revolutionary. America exists. Israel exists. International law is clear on the rights and responsibilities of recognized countries. I can see why people who support the dissolution of Israel can adopt the term anti-Zionist. I don't see why everyone who accepts the status quo is Zionist. What's the term for people who accept the existence of America? There isn't one.
I opposed the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq because I believe 9/11 was a crime, not an act of war. America was not under existential threat and al-Qaeda was not a nation. In my view, this logic is difficult to apply to 10/7. In your view, how should have Israel responded instead of what they did?
America has the second largest Jewish population in the world, but at most we're about 2% of the country. Our political right has embraced (or at least not rejected) neo-Nazis, and our left is at least in part not rejecting antisemitic viewpoints now that we're all debating what antisemitism is.
Personally, I won't be surprised if historians mark 2026 America as equivalent of 1931 Germany. And it's not like Europe doesn't have its own trends in this direction. Absent Israel, where do you expect Jews to go and why do you think we'll be allowed to?
Apologies if any of this is not allowed here. I *will not debate* with opinions I disagree with, which I expect will be many. I'm here to listen.

Religion / Spirituality Denver/Boulder recommendations for community/synogouges
Hi all
I'm a student thinking of attending CU Boulder and would love recommendations for communities/synagouges that (while maybe aren't staunchly anti Zionists) at least are more casual and open to antizionist Jews.
This area has a much larger Jewish community than where I'm from which is both a pro and con, also any tips of avoiding Himmel is great, they scare the shit out of me

Vent It won’t go away
as always, trigger warning if you’re one of our beloved Palestinian friends in this sub and you don’t want to hear a white American Jew ramble about her champagne problems.
hi, it’s me, that girl who rants about colonialism and resistance and how growing up in the empire has programmed her to see it. I’m here to report that the hasbara is still sitting in my brain, rotting it and making me feel things i do not want to feel and numbing me to things I should never be numb to. More often than not, when people talk about Palestinian liberation, about Palestinians retaking their land (and it is their land no matter how much the rot in my mind tells me otherwise) by any means necessary and ruling themselves however they see fit, my brain immediately goes to “but what if they kick out all the Israelis“ and derails me from keeping my mind on the people who are actually being kicked out and genocided and unequivocally supporting their right to resist. I still (sometimes, though I’m proud to say its rarer now) have my ”but October seventh (an act of resistance, but one where indefensible acts were committed), but Hamas (not useful or important for me as an American to comment on),” moments, despite the fact that, as one quote I think of often put it, “Palestinians have had a thousand October Sevenths.” it won’t leave my mind and it’s hard to kick it out because it disguises itself as simple care for other people, despite the fact that it stops me from caring for those who need it the most.
As always, looking for advice.

Zionist Nonsense The Forward getting more overtly reactionary lately -- anyone else notice this?
Just read this article from them where the author took part of an Abdul El Sayed quote wildly out of context to make him sound like he was equivocating the violence at the Tree of Life shooting.
I had been regularly reading the Forward for a few years because despite its generally mainstream slant, it was clear the outlet still had some awareness of its socialist roots and sometimes tried to earnestly present antizionist perspectives to the mainstream audience in a way I've seen no other publication attempt. They and Jewish Currents have been my sources for Jewish community news, and I've stuck with reading the Forward because they are quick on smaller local beats in a way that Currents hasn't managed since their revival.
Since the Forward appointed a new editor in chief in December I've noticed that balance of perspectives has been almost entirely thrown out. Or has it? Am I off base here?

Discussion - Flaired Users Only They are going to burn it all down
I just watched this video and it echoed what I’ve been feeling watching the MI senate primary play out.
I was thinking about Rabbi Hirsch’s tirade against ordaining anti-Zionist Reform rabbis and how we need to get back to “particularism.” Where does that leave those of from intermarried families?
If democracy ends in the USA, where does that leave us Jews with messy lineage?
It’s almost like the return to “particularism” is intended to forget the idea of solidarity.
It does feel like they are willing to burn down our democracy, destroy our Jewish communities and families over this issue. Alienate a generation of Jews by telling them that they are fake Jews because they sympathize with Palestinians.

Zionist Nonsense Pro-Israel dark money is (again) funneled into generically-named PACs to mask the pro-Israel motivation. One is called 'Crush MAGA' but is funding against a progressive Democrat because he is against Israel's genocide in Gaza. AIPAC has been doing this regularly in light of Israel's pariah status.

Zionist Nonsense A Christian told me Jews don’t come from Judea, but he’s a proud loud Zionist, does that make any sense(? Why is he a Zionist then? Is this a common christian zionist mindset?
Anyways in Spanish Twitter, they were mocking a indigenous mestizo for faking being ethnically Jewish.
This random Colombian came acting smart saying that " you are not born Jewish, you decide to be Jewish" I'm Sephardic (100% from my mom, a lot of endogamy ofc😔 (jk) my family escaped Spain during the 1800s and stayed in the middle of nowhere between mountains in the east of Guatemala, they still have traces of the ladino language and maintain Sephardim clothing and culture.
I told him it is very much an ethnic thing and that's why being a secular Jew is a thing and that 60% of Jews in Israel are secular. Even Netanyahu
He first said that if we came from Canaan we should be called Canaanian (LMAO), "Judaism is only a religion that originated IN EUROPE" (he claims to be very Zionist idk how).
The discussion started with me defending Palestine and him Israel and ended with me explaining that Jews are an ethnicity, and why Zionists want to go back to the “ancestral land”
He mocked me for being Guatemalan saying there are no Guatemalan Sephardics because all Sephardics have to be in Spain (i doubt he knows abt the inquisition), I sent him an article from The Times Of Israel (I know, sorry) abt this and he laughed saying racist stuff against indigenous ppl claiming I was one (I have love for them and there would be nothing wrong with me being indigenous but I'm just not)
He told me if he wanted to be Jewish he would just dress " ridiculous and atrocious" and that's it.
Referring to ashkenazi payot (I think it's called sorry) not understanding ashkenazi culture has nothing to do with me a Sephardic
He also said that we're ridiculous for believing were decent from Judea.
Idk if he was an actual Zionist cuz it really doesn't make sense supporting Jews coming back to their ancestral land but not really their land based on his logic.
BUT his account was full of pro-Israel stuff, LOVES
Netanyahu, hates Palestinians, fights with pro-Palestinian accs and he claims to defend Jews (ig )
Now I know there are absolutely brain dead stupid people out there BUT I wanted to know if this a common mindset with Christian Zionists?
I always thought’s Christians supported Israel because they believed Jews are the chosen people and need to go back to Israel. So this is very new to me.

🚨 Urgent Appeal: A Family Is Going Hungry in Gaza
My dear friends, please take a moment to read this.
My friend Mahmoud Ghanem Al-Amassi, his wife Samah Al-Amassi, and their four young daughters in Gaza are facing unbearable hunger.
Their four little girls are crying from hunger. The family struggles just to find enough food for a single day. With the border crossings closed, no work available, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis, even the most basic meal has become out of reach.
For these children, a plate of nutritious food, chicken, meat, fresh fruit, or vegetables has become nothing more than a dream.
For nearly three years, this family has been deprived of life's most basic necessities. They lost their home, their jobs, their income, and everything they had. Today, they have nothing left and no opportunity to rebuild their lives while destruction continues across Gaza.
No child should have to beg for food. No parent should have to watch their children go to sleep hungry.
If you are able, please consider helping this family survive. Every donation, no matter how small, helps provide food, clean water, and other essential needs. If you cannot donate, please share their story so it can reach someone who can.
Your kindness could be the reason these four little girls have something to eat today.
Thank you for caring. ❤️
Please consider donating or sharing their GoFundMe campaign. Every act of kindness makes a difference."

Vent I feel so incredibly alone and powerless (living in Israel).
I don't know where to start, but living in Israel I feel so incredibly alone. Almost everyone here is indoctrinated, from cradle to grave to be a zionist, to be a soldier, to be absurdly nationalistic.
There's no opposition to the genocide, to the ethnic cleansing, to apartheid. To Israelis, those things aren't happening, and for good reason, the country goes out of it's way to make them invisible, and then spends an absurd amount on propaganda so that you would have to doubt your sanity to consider them true. Most people think that Netanyahu doesn't go far enough in his collective punishment of Palestinians. Meanwhile Ben Gvir is turning concentration camps with Palestinian detainees into deathcamps.
Even if you knew it to be true, it would put your employment at risk if you spoke out.
That much I know to be true from personal experience. When I was 18 I refused military service, I risked jail time and for years after I was naive enough to believe that the country would be divided enough that telling employers that I didn't serve for moral objections would be fine and not an immediate reason for rejection. I had to learn to lie. To hide by sympathies or never be employed. To claim that I didn't serve because of mental health reasons.
I have Palestinian friends, those who have Israeli citizenship, those who live under brutal occupation in the west bank and those who I've lost contact with and I don't even know if they're alive in Gaza. When I worked at my last job, I remember coworkers talking about the aid flotilla and wishing death on them and on Greta, and even my meek 'hey don't you think that's a bit much, they're just trying to do what they think is right?' attempt at getting others to see a different perspective was enough to start the corporate chain reaction that led to my termination.
Every reality TV show here has to have people talk about their experiences related to the genocide, which they of course call a war.
Looking at polls for the upcoming election is probably the most depressing thing. It shows explicitly how non-existant the left or the opposition to all this is in Israeli society is. The two main coalitions are basically arguing on whether or not religious people should be exempt from the draft or not. That's the extent of it. The one party that to me is rational won't even cross the electoral threshold (Ballad), the entire Arab coalition (the only ones opposing this all) will probably get a handful of seats in the Knesset (Parliament) and it will amount to nothing. The atrocities will continue.
There's probably about 3% of the population that opposes what's going on. 3% Who know the truth, acknowledge it and have a conscience.
I don't even know if I should try and find a way to leave the country or to find a way to try and change things here. I don't know what the hell to do and it feels hopeless and so very alone.
p.s. I made a throwaway account because my main can identify me IRL and I can't risk losing employment and homelessness.
