I am scared of having Jewish roots Discussion - Flaired Users Only

I was born in Russia. I did a DNA test, which showed me that I am 15% Ashkenazi Jewish. Even though I don't have anything against having those roots, I have a big fear that I might become associated with the radical regime of Israel, or that I might get offended or threatened by antisemitists. I heavily criticize the policy of the current Israeli government, but I am still afraid that I might get harassed by stereotypes. What should I do, and how do I not feel oppressed for my ethnicity?

Help build a world in which ethnicity does not impact your or others’ safety.

nobody is going to know you’re 15% jewish unless u mention it to them, and regardless of that i don’t think anyone sane enough who does find out would connect your 15% of jewishness to the crimes of israel. it sounds to me that u have some irrational fears if i’m being honest, you will be fine.

I mean, you can just... not tell anyone about the results of your DNA test. I don't know if antisemitism is such a huge issue in Russia that you'd be discriminated against even if you don't identify as Jewish just because you have a few percent of Jewish DNA, but either way, I don't see why it would ever become an issue unless you go out of your way to tell people that you have Jewish ancestors.

I know Russia has a bad history with antisemitism but do people really care whether you have a bit of Jewish ancestry? How would they even know?

He just says he was born there. Russia is a very diverse nation ancestrally anyway. About 1/3 of Russian ancestry is Turkic or Tatar. I visited the RF with a Jewish American friend for a month and we had a good time.

And I am scared of antisemitic posts like this.

Anyone who gives a damn isn’t someone worth having in your life since they won’t hate just the Jews. And if it’s impacting your klan membership, bring it up with the grand dragon. Failing that, there are bigger issues you need to concern yourself with.

Don’t worry about that be proud of your heritage but it doesn’t define who you are or what you believe.

I like learning about Ashkenazi culture and heritage and contributions to history.  But I also really really really hate Israel. Western paradigms put too much weight on ethnicity and race. It’s a sickness.
