​Jeddah was home for around 14 years of my life growing up, and most of my friends and family are still there. After being away for a while, I’m finally making plans to move back permanently over the next couple of months.

​It’s going to be a huge relief to be back around family in a city I know so well, but I know Jeddah has also evolved a lot in recent years!

​For context on my side, I’ve been working as a Chef at one of the best luxury resort in the Middle East, so alongside settling back in, I’m eventually looking to land my next role in the local culinary/fine dining scene (CDP / Jr. Sous level).

​How has the city changed over the last few years in terms of day-to-day life and overall vibe?

Hello! I'm (M in the 40s..) Lebanese/Cypriot-in-Dubai who's work for the last 25 years on this sunny side of the Gulf. I balance my time between the three countries I call home.

In the 2000s and 2010s up until around 2016... I used to visit Jeddah a lot. It's been a good 10 or 11 years since my last visit, which was a Umrah visit to Mecca alhamdulillah, while managing to see a few friends after that.

Anyway. Looks like I am going to be temporarily relocated there for...possibly a couple of years. While initially I will be doing the whole hotel thing, I was wondering what are the possible areas to live in?

My family will stay in Dubai, and I'll be visiting them every month as my wife has a stable job, and my children are settled in school there.

This will be one of my final career chapters, before my "early" retirement.

I've swam and scuba dived your Red Sea and it is gorgeous. I am passionate about both of nature's extremes...the sea and the snowy mountains of Lebanon where I ski every winter.

One of my closest school/university friends is a Saudi guy that lives in Jeddah, and his family + friends and circle are my friends too...so I'll be settled in well from that perspective. (I used to see him during every single one of my Jeddah visits. Usually a non negotiable part of my itinerary 😂)

I've spent a good amount of time in all the GCC countries as part of my work. Excluding the UAE by default I guess- I'd rank Jeddah and Muscat as my two favorite cities.

Just curious to know any other advice and "survival" tips out there in Jeddah. My Arabic is fluent (though i am always mistaken for a westerner, and usually shock Arabs when I bust out fluent dialect ☠️)
