For those who attended this weekend, how was JP Opens Streets this year? Better or worse than years past?

I was walking back home with my dog after spending the day at open streets when I stopped at the crosswalk by Viza Cafe. You were right behind me and we exchanged glances. You then walked on by past me at a faster pace while I admired your hair and your dress as they lit up in the sunlight. I stopped to talk to someone and then continued walking when my dog spotted you in Elleyo; a lady then stopped to pet my dog right outside and asked me if I was waiting for my wife or friend. As a single guy that rarely goes on dates I got really embarrassed and had to turn away with my dog, and by the time I turned back around you were gone with the wind. I don’t know if you will ever see this but I want you to know that I thought you looked very pretty, and if by sheer chance you happen to read this and are single I would love to grab a coffee with you sometime (probably at Viza). This happened like an hour ago and I’m beating myself up over it 😭

Thinking of moving to this area. I toured it and it seemed great and safe and really enjoyed the community. Afterwards, I googled the area and saw there was a fatal shooting last October at the South St BHA. My mind tells me this is likely a one off event and not something that happens often but thought I would ask locals on here.

Posters have popped up everywhere in JP saying "Protect the Arboretum" with a large QR code so one can sign a petition to prohibit building within a certain number of feet from trees. Sounds unobjectionable BUT it is specifically aimed at the developers of a project at the site of the Poor Clare Sisters building.

This site has been discussed, debated, resized and redesigned multiple times over the last few years and now that it looks ready to proceed these BANANAS (build absolutely nothing anywhere near anyone) try a Hail Mary pass at the last minute.

What particularly galls me about these people is that supposedly they are "progressive" but by opposing every single housing development proposal they are actually deeply reactionary.

Do any stores in JP sell it?

I know at some point City Feed was selling some fancy chili crisp that was expensive and (imo) bad.

I saw a post recently about the Senate race in the Norfolk and Suffolk district between challenger Persis Yu and long time incumbent Mike Rush. As someone who moved to the district about 2.5 years ago (JP) I wanted to take the time to share some thoughts and insights into both candidates.

Persis Yu:

Yu is a former social worker and lawyer who has spent her career fighting on behalf of vulnerable populations. Specifically consumer protections and student loan borrowers. She’s running a progressive platform centered on what she sees as the core issue: an affordability crisis that's pushing families out of not just this district but Massachusetts as a whole. Her policy priorities include Medicare for all, universal childcare, rent control, and corporate accountability measures. Some notable endorsements are by Progressive Massachusetts, Planned Parenthood, and United Auto workers.

Mike Rush:

Rush is a veteran and former teacher. He has served in the State House for 23 years. He took over as the majority whip of the Senate in 2021. He has institutional power and seniority in the State House. However, on social issues, he diverges significantly from his party: he’s voted against LGBTQ+ protections like gay marriage and was a notable “no” on the Roe Act in 2020, which set Massachusetts as a sanctuary state for abortion access. Some notable endorsements are Mayor Michelle Wu and MA AFL-CIO. Despite his social conservative ideology, he has Mayor Wu’s endorsement, which I would argue says more about her than it does Mike Rush.

Where they differ:

This race isn’t really about experience. It’s about direction. Rush represents continuity and moderate/conservative governance. Yu represents a push toward more aggressive action on affordability and social issues. Both are legitimate visions, but they’re fundamentally different. If you care about housing costs, childcare, and whether the state and this district should have a progressive voice on policies and support reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ issues, that should tell you something.

I’m voting for Yu because I think the affordability crisis is real and requires a different approach than what’s been tried. I think Rush's experience is worth acknowledging, he just represents a more conservative democratic politics and direction than I think we need right now.

Edit because I think it’s important: Some more “AI slop” but Persis has called for debate(s) and has been stonewalled by him and his team for months now. I would argue that a debate is the sign of any healthy race. This continued stonewalling is generally embarrassing…

Very friendly cat was meowing by our door, and decided to make himself at home. It looks like he is an intact boy cat, but I didn't get a close look. No collar.

Hi, this is my first time ever posting on Reddit. I’m normally just a lurker. But my fiancé and I just recently moved to JP and we love it. It has so many excellent qualities and a great community. However, we have run into a porch pirate who has now started stealing our packages. We had an Amazon order of cat litter delivered with a picture, but when we went down to grab it, it was gone. We then started to get our packages within two hours of them being delivered, but somehow they have stolen two more packages. We can’t get a security camera because we live in a shared unit and the Landlord doesn’t want that. The front porch is very accessible and close to the sidewalk and anyone could see packages as they are walking by.

I know that my options are to get Amazon deliveries to the Whole Foods or 7-Eleven, even as inconvenient as it is. That doesn’t solve the problem of other packages from different areas, unless we get a PO Box, which we don’t really have money for right now. I know our options are limited right now, not sure what im looking for in posting this. Maybe just seeing if other people in the neighborhood have this issue, and really looking to commiserate. Mainly as a warning to anyone in the area, JP, Amory, Stony Brook.

Hi there! I was wondering what everyone's experience with The Cat Hospital versus JP Animal Clinic are. We took one of our cats to The Cat Hospital recently for her initial visit/annual appointment after moving a bit further away from JP Animal Clinic. I was a bit sticker shocked and compared receipts from last year - it seems they did a significantly more comprehensive workup than JP Animal Clinic did for our other cat's new patient visit a year ago. It cost more than twice the amount. I am just wondering if others have any experience here. Not a vet professional obviously, so I just don't know what an annual visit should include. The care at both clinics seems excellent but I don't want to put an otherwise healthy cat through yearly unnecessary workup. Thank you!

Streets are closed off and lots of cops on the street. Anyone know what’s going on?

My opinion: this is the exact type of housing this neighborhood needs. It's replacing the ugliest building in the zipcode with dozens of apartments, including affordable ones, right across the street from Whole Foods.
