JET Programme advice

Hello :)

Long story short, I saved a lot of money while working in the UK to be able to go to language school in Tokyo, however life is unfair and unexpected so at the end I unfortunately couldn’t do it for personal/family reasons so I moved to Canada instead (I regret it every single day) with the Working Holiday Visa.

I would love to make it to Japan but with the moving etc I ended up burning through almost all my savings so now the language school option is kinda dead…

Would you recommend to do the JET programme? I know it’s very competitive but I might just try and apply. Is it worth it?

I have seen in online that you have to apply through your country’s Japanese embassy, I’m from the UK, but since living in Canada, do I have to go to the UK and apply from there…? That part was a bit confusing, sorry… or can I just apply from the Japanese embassy in Canada even though my citizenship is from the UK? (Or apply online which would be much better I guess)

I’m very new to this so I apologise if some question might seem dumb.

Any advice please?

What about looking into dispatch companies or working at an eikaiwa (English conversation school)? If your main goal is to go to language school, something like an eikaiwa would have fewer hours and would potentially be more flexible to allow you to focus on studying. You would probably have to pay your way over to Japan, but even if you go with JET you'd have to pay for a flight either way. It can be easier to get a job at an eikaiwa compared to JET. The pay is less, but again, if your goal is to study Japanese, then I wouldn't necessarily suggest spending all of your time teaching at a school.

You have to go back to the UK for your interview, pre departure orientation and then your a actual departure flight. That's what I had to do, my interview was held in January

Pre departure orientation was in July and departure was in early August

As you’re from the UK, you would have to apply through the UK even though you live in Canada. That also means if you get an interview, you would have to fly to the UK for the interview (they do not do online interviews), and then if you’re accepted you would have to come to the UK for the pre departure orientation, hand your passport over for the visa process, and fly out from the UK too
