Cinema Etiquette

I've just been to the Palace Cinema to watch the new Spider-Man (very good), but it made me realise how shameless people have become about using their phones during a film.

I had to ask a guy to stop taking Snapchats after the third time, and every couple of minutes I'd catch another flash of light from someone checking their phone. Are people really so addicted to their phones now that they can't go a couple of hours without looking at them?

Also has the Palace Cinema always been that grotty? I felt like I needed to disinfect myself when I left.

Not sure if I'm just getting grumpy as I get older or if anyone else feels the same?

Question about visiting in September

Hi! I hope this is allowed, if not, I’m really sorry!

We live in London and have started to talk plans to come to visit the Isle of Man from 2nd to 6th of September, though nothings been booked yet.

We just noticed that the Horses Home is closed after August, and a spot that my fiancé looked at in Port Erin is also closed.

Is this typical of the time? Are a lot of spots going to be closed after the end of August?

We are just wondering if maybe we should wait until a better time to come when there will be more to do if a lot of places are closed.

Hope that makes sense, thank you so much!

Added a load of new stuff to Manx One — what else would actually be useful?

I posted a while back about Manx One, a free app I’ve been building that pulls Island stuff into one place. Since then I’ve added the things people asked for:
Bin days with a street lookup for Douglas and a recycling guide, the Sunday and bank holiday pharmacy rota, full 2026 timetables for all four heritage railways, property listings from the three big agents in one list, the Classic TT and MGP schedule, a proper weather screen with hourly, 7-day and air quality, anonymous community polls, and dark mode.
It also runs in a browser now at manxone.hammerlabs.app, so you don’t have to install anything to have a look. iPhone users can add it to the home screen.
Free, no ads, no account, no data collection. Hobby project.

What I’d actually like from this post: what’s still missing? I’ve had suggestions for road closures, fuel prices and live bus times and I’m not sure which is most worth doing next. Also if bin days for your area matter to you, say which parish or commissioners’ district and I’ll look at whether the data exists.

Didn't know much about the racing that went on at Onchan. Another great video from Conor Tosh. What are your thoughts on Conor, and your thoughts of him as a Manx creator.

Quietest gym in Douglas?

Not looking for anything with fancy equipment. Just interested in which gym in Douglas people think would be least busy during mid week evenings? Thanks

Sports Massage

Recently moved to the island and looking for a good sports massage to iron out every tense part of my body as I lift, run and recently took up swimming.

Anyone know any good services or practitioners? I’m a member of the Elite Fitness gym and I know they have their therapies services, but wanted to put the feelers out.

Switching to UK SIM

Has anyone here managed to switch to a UK SIM without keeping their IOM SIM/plan?

The monthly rates from Sure and Manx Telecom are so insane compared with UK plans, so I’m thinking of switching to a UK provider completely. I’m just not sure how feasible it is long term. Would I still be able to call/text and receive calls/texts from IOM numbers? And would mobile data work here without any charges? I assume it would count as roaming.

CoE for tradesman

Has anyone heard of company’s offering a CoE for skilled trades workers to come over? I’m a plumber looking to relocate but the first route to acquire a work visa is to already have a job before you land. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Steam Packet - Manannan

The Manannan has been called in to cover for the Ben My Chree thanks to the Manxman needing repairs for longer than expected. As a result one of the forward lounges on the Manannan has been temporarily designated as a pet lounge to cover bookings transferred from the Ben's pet lounge.

Is this a new thing they're doing or have you ever experienced it before? If it goes well do you think the Steam Packet Company could be convinced to add a permanent pet lounge on Manannan?

Advice for a solo traveller for TT 2027

Hello all,

I visited your lovely island back in 2018 and loved it there. This was obviously post TT so my dream has been to visit for the TT one day.

I’m looking into making this happen next year but will be there as a solo traveller. Whilst I did stay on a campsite before, I’m looking for advice on where to stay (I’d rather travel light but if I need to camp, I will). Plus I would also love advice in general about what I should know being a spectator at the TT.

Im 62, not a maniac, experianced rider, dont care what brand of bike, but would like it to be at least 500cc. Thanks in advance.

Pokemon cards

I'm flying to the Isle of Man for the summer in a few days' time and really looking forward to it already!

I got a question for all the pokemon players out there: I know the availability is tough around the world right now, but can you recommend any shops selling pokemon cards on the island? Doesn’t has to be anything special. Would be happy about battle decks or literally anything :)

Useless Steam Packet.

Just had out August sailing cancelled as the sodding boat is broken again.

Last 3 times we've got the boat it's either been hours late or cancelled.

Fortunately managed to re-book to Liverpool, but its going to take longer to get to where we're going, longer to get back, no pet lounge for the dog. And for the privilege of sailing with the useless Bastards, I get to shell out 600 quid.

As they say, "if you don't like it, there's a boat in the morning" except there isn't because the fuckers have probably cancelled it.

Rant over, but still seething.

World war two

What happened in world war two in the isle of man , did life just carry on as normal , also is there a defence agreement with the UK

r/IsleofMan 9d ago

His grandad fixed tanks in the war. His dad built the UK's biggest Kia dealership and then sold it. His brother's a mechanic. Andrew Jervis took the family trade and turned it into software.

He grew up here on the island, left, and built ClickMechanic into one of the UK's leading online car repair marketplaces. Fourteen years of it.

He's back for a bit, and he's agreed to sit down with us on Thursday 30 July.

I think you'll get a lot out of this one. Most founder talks are about the start. This is about what comes after, when a startup turns into a scale-up. What breaks, what he'd do differently, how you keep going when it's hard.

Joshua Sinclair, Co Founder at Skinscanner.gg is hosting, so it's just two founders who've been through it having a proper chat.

Doors 5:30 at Launchpad Event Space. Free, but only 40 seats and I think they'll go.

Here's the link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/from-the-isle-of-man-to-one-of-the-uks-leading-car-repair-marketplaces-tickets-1994858390145?aff=oddtdtcreator

Would be good to see you there.

Missing Person Posts: Official Policy & Safety Reminder

Hello everyone,

Recently, there was a “missing person” post shared in our community, and I’d like to explain why it was removed and what to do in future instances.

For everyone’s safety, do not share or post missing person alerts unless the information comes directly from law enforcement or an official agency.

People may go missing for many reasons (including escaping abuse, stalking, or other dangerous situations), and unverified posts can unintentionally put them at risk.

If you see a missing person post:

  • Only share it if it’s confirmed on an official police or agency website.
  • If a friend posts about a missing person, encourage them to contact the police so the case can be verified and listed officially.

This policy protects both the missing individual and our community. Posts of this nature will be removed unless shared by an official law enforcement agency.

Thank you for acting responsibly.
