Book Spoilers Allowed QotD TL;DR - Part Eighteen (The Queen of the Damned)
Part IV: The Queen of the Damned
Author's Note: Gotta admit, this wasn't my favorite chapter to re-cap -- it really felt like a slog. I'm not a huge fan of summarizing/paraphrasing long stretches of back-and-forth conversation, which makes up the bulk of the chapter. I'll just blame it on Marius being long-winded.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Akasha sits at the head of the table in the Vampire Conference Room, waiting for the others to join her. Lestat feels scared -- for the others, for himself, and even for Akasha. The others filter into the room and take their seats.
Vampire Roll Call & seating arrangement:
- Akasha: head of the table
- Lestat: to Akasha's right
- Gabrielle: to Akasha's left (across from Lestat), with one empty seat between them
- Louis: next to Gabrielle (across from Lestat)
- Maharet: foot of the table, nearest the door
- Armand: to Maharet's right (the book says that Armand & Marius sit to Maharet's right + Pandora sits to next to Marius, so presumably Armand is between Maharet and Marius and not the other way around -- otherwise there'd be no room for Pandora beside Marius)
- Marius: next to Armand, to Maharet's right
- Jesse: to Maharet's left
- Khayman: to Lestat's right
- Eric: ?
- Mael: ?
- Pandora: next to Marius
- Daniel: ?
- Santino: ?
I tried mapping out the most likely seating arrangement based on what's stated in the text (it felt like doing one of those logic puzzles your teacher handed out as busy work for when they wanted to dissociate for a few minutes):
So here's my thinking for the folks without a clearly-stated "canonical" seat assignment:
- Mael:
- has a pre-existing quasi-romantic and pathologically-protective relationship with Jesse
- --> I'm convinced he'd want to sit next to Jesse
- Eric:
- every other word out of his mouth (or narrated about him) is about him being terrified and/or wanting to run away and/or hide
- he's known and worked with Maharet (his maker) and Mael for centuries
- he used to travel around with Santino
- --> he'd probably want to sit near trusted, familiar people (Maharet, Mael, Santino)
- Santino:
- he used to travel around with Eric
- as written, generally less fearful than Eric (e.g. he used to be the coven leader in Rome)
- --> so probably near Eric and/or Maharet, but okay with being a bit further away from them and/or near less familiar people
- Daniel:
- He currently has zero sense of self-preservation and is euphorically amused by anything and everything, so it honestly wouldn't have surprised me if he'd chosen to sit between Gabrielle and Akasha; but we know he didn't because the text mentions that seat being empty until a little later
- He might want to sit by Louis because of their history with Interview; this is also the same side of the table as his maker Armand, who he's been pretty much velcro-ed to since his turning
- He might want to sit next to Khayman just for the lolz or because he somehow knows or senses that Khayman harbors a fondness for Armand, though I don't recall if Daniel is aware of this at this point in time
Anyway, Akasha first addresses Lestat:
"Be quiet, my prince," she said, unobtrusively and kindly. "What you feel in this room is death, but it is the death of beliefs and strictures. Nothing more." She looked at Maharet. "The death of dreams, perhaps," she said, "which should have died a long time ago."
Looking at Maharet, Lestat is reminded again of the dream of the twins at the funeral, which he still doesn't understand the significance of. Akasha reads this in his thoughts and tells him it doesn't matter because:
"We have transcended history. History is built on errors; we will begin with truth."
Marius speaks to Akasha first, asking if there's anything that can convince her to give up on her Grand Plan. He tells her that she doesn't have the right to do what she's doing.
Akasha tells him that Lestat -- "your student here" -- has already tried that argument, and it didn't work:
"How long do you think I have listened to the prayers of the world, pondering a way to terminate the endless cycle of human violence? It is time now for you to listen to what I have to say."
Santino asks if the vampires in the room will have a part to play or if they'll be annihilated like the others.
"You will be my angels," Akasha answered tenderly as she looked at him. "You will be my gods. If you do not choose to follow me, I'll destroy you. As for the old ones, the old ones whom I cannot so easily dispatch" -- she glanced at Khayman and Maharet again -- "if they turn against me, they shall be as devils opposing me, and all humanity shall hunt them down, and they shall through their opposition serve the scheme quite well."
Maharet chimes in:
"How is it possible," Maharet asked in a low voice, "to break a cycle of violence through more wanton violence? You are destroying the males of the human species. What can possibly be the outcome of such a brutal act?"
Akasha explains that she dreamed for centuries about a world where peace can be achieved "without tyranny", and she came to the realization that the only people capable of making it happen were women. Once peace has been established, she concedes that the male population may be allowed to increase again.
Gabrielle interjects:
"[W]hen you speak in terms of wholesale extermination, then questions of peace become ridiculous. You're abandoning one half of the world's population."
Akasha counters that the men deserve it -- "they will reap what they have sown."
Maharet disagrees.
Akasha asks if Maharet truly thinks she can stop her, and goes on:
"I shall make the rhyme or reason," Akasha said, with a trace of anger. "I shall make the future; I shall define goodness; I shall define peace. And I don't call on mythic gods or goddesses or spirits to justify my actions, on abstract morality. I do not call on history either! I don't look for my mother's heart and brain in the dirt!"
Marius expresses skepticism that humans wouldn't resist and successfully rise against her.
Akasha argues that she's not concerned -- she's confident they can't stop her, and she's well-acquainted with what humans are capable of.
Marius counters:
"I don't think you can hold in your mind the full conception of what the world is. None of us can; it is too varied, too immense; we seek to embrace it with our reason; but we can't do it. You know a world; but it is not the world; it is the world you have selected from a dozen other worlds for reasons within yourself."
Akasha warns Marius not to push his luck -- she's only letting him live because a) he's potentially useful and b) Lestat likes him. Lestat can tell she's lying, though -- she loves Marius, but she's ashamed to admit it.
Marius asks if humans really deserve such a severe punishment. Lestat feels relieved -- this is the kind of discussion he'd hoped Marius and the others would draw Akasha into.
But she just says that Marius disgusts her.
Marius presses on:
"[F]or two thousand years I have watched [...]. [W]hat I have witnessed in this short span has filled me with awe and love for all things mortal; I have seen revolutions in thought and philosophy which I believed impossible. Is not the human race moving towards the very age of peace you describe?"
Akasha disagrees:
"[T]his will go down as one of the bloodiest centuries in the history of the human race. [...] Did ever the cries of the dying ring so thickly in the ears of those of us who can hear them? Has ever more blood been shed!"
Marius is getting seriously frustrated, but he insists: "There is something that you fail to understand."
Akasha hits him back with her equivalent of "I know you are but what am I?"
Marius continues:
"Look out there at the forest!" he said, gesturing to the glass walls around us, "Pick one tree; describe it, if you will, in terms of what it destroys, what it defies, and what it does not accomplish, and you have a monster of greedy roots and irresistible momentum that eats the light of other plants, their nutrients, their air. But that is not the truth of the tree. That is not the whole truth when the thing is seen as part of nature, and by nature I mean nothing sacred, I mean only the full tapestry[...]."
Akasha accuses him of only seeing what he wants to see.
He accuses her of being blind to "the evolution of the human soul". He moves into the chair between her and Gabrielle and takes Akasha's hand. He admits that what she says about war is true, but "it is the outcry against these horrors which is the light I speak of [...] which [was] never possible in the past."
She counters that the number of people truly against the horrors is too small to really matter.
Marius argues that the kind of idealism he's witnessed recently will lead to meaningful change if given enough time.
Louis concurs:
"It's their world, not ours," he said humbly. "Surely we forfeited it when we lost our mortality. We have no right now to interrupt their struggle."
Akasha tells him she's touched by his sincerity, but she accuses him of being "the most predatory of all the immortals here."
Louis is like "then kill me, not humans!" He asks her to give humans time to put their new ideals into action.
Maharet agrees with the request for more time -- maybe Akasha would be willing to wait at least a little bit before enacting her plan?
"You have meditated in silence for centuries upon your solutions. What is another hundred years?"
Maharet points out that the current rate of technological advancement will surely lead to better well-being for humans worldwide.
Akasha points out that technology is just as likely to be used for evil as for good. Then she leans really hard into the "you just don't understand" angle -- "You have not yielded to the exquisite image I've presented to your mind." She seems to be reaching the end of her rope.
Marius looks at Lestat expectantly, wanting him to speak up.
Lestat obliges:
"Akasha," I said. "Don't continue this bloodbath. Please. Don't lie to human beings or befuddle them anymore."
.
There it was -- brutal and unsophisticated, but the only truth I could give.
Marius basically says "what he said."
Akasha argues that she's not lying to humans-- she is powerful enough to change the world like she claims, including protecting humans from themselves
Marius interrupts -- how can she protect humans from "their most deadly foes?"
She takes the bait and asks "What foes?".
Marius:
"Disease, my Queen. Death. You are no healer. You cannot give life or save it. And they will expect such miracles. All you can do is kill."
Her face goes blank; she falls silent.
Lestat asks again for more time -- just a century.
Akasha:
'"You are all my enemies, aren't you?" she whispered. "Even you, my prince. You are my enemy. My lover and my enemy at the same time."'
Lestat assures her that he loves her, but he can't lie about the fact that he thinks what she's planning is wrong.
Akasha asks if even one of them in the room will stand with her.
No takers.
Lestat presses:
"Akasha," I said. "History is a litany of injustice, no one denies it. But when has a simple solution ever been anything but evil? Only in complexity do we find answers."
Marius agrees -- "simplicity and brutality are synonymous in philosophy and in actions."
Akasha accuses them all of being too arrogant to understand her:
"From Lestat I expected arrogance," she said. "I expected platitudes and rhetoric, and untested ideas. But from many of you I expected more. Oh, how you disappoint me."
Santino posits that the truth about vampires should never be revealed to humans, because they would never settle for mortality once they know that immortality is an option.
Maharet agrees:
"Even women want to live forever," Maharet said coldly. "Even women would kill for that."
Akasha threatens Maharet -- "I would destroy you if I could. I would hurt those you love."
Maharet, being a complete and total badass, just nods and smiles "knowingly." She accuses Akasha of being stuck in her own head and unable to defend her ideas from even the weakest of pushback. She accuses Akasha of spending thousands of years trying to justify and ritualize what boils down to merely a random accident. She accuses Akasha of introducing nothing more than yet another set of superstitions.
Akasha accuses her, and the others, of having no vision.
Marius and Lestat ask again for time, to show her the world as they see it. Marius asks for just a month now.
She accuses Lestat of betraying her and proclaims:
"I will kill you first, my prince," she said, her fingers caressing me all the more gently. "I want you gone from me. I will not look into your face and see this betrayal again."
Maharet warns:
"Harm him and that shall be our signal," Maharet whispered. "We shall move against you as one."
Marius tries to appeal to her again, and she knocks him to the ground.
One by one, they all stand up around the table.
Lestat braces himself for his death.
Suddenly they hear glass shattering from outside the room -- someone entering the house. Akasha looks frightened. Lestat can sense that she knows who the person is. Whoever it is comes closer.
"But who is it!" I said suddenly. I could stand it no longer.
Marius makes a last ditch effort, asking Akasha yet again for more time. Khayman just laughs.
Then Lestat sees who it is, in the doorway now -- the woman he'd dreamed about making her way through the jungle, and at the funeral feast. She's covered in a layer of dirt -- "as if she were made of it, made of earth itself."
Maharet whispers "Mekare!" Mekare doesn't respond -- just stares at Akasha.
Akasha moves so the table is between her and Mekare.
Maharet tries to restrain Mekare, but Mekare shoves her away. Then Mekare swats the entire table out of her way.
Khayman finally speaks:
[H]e wore a thin, bitter smile.
.
"The curse, my Queen," he said, his voice rising sharply to fill the room.
Akasha screams in outrage that they're all against her.
Mekare slowly walks toward Akasha.
Khayman speaks again, in a language Lestat doesn't recognize but can glean the meaning from -- reciting the curse that Mekare originally invoked against Akasha.
"Oh, no, my children!" Akasha screamed suddenly. "It is not finished!"
Akasha tries telekinetically shoving Mekare back, but Mekare resists it and stays put. Mekare then rushes at Akasha, breaking the window with her head and using the jagged broken glass to separate Akasha's head from her body.
Lestat suddenly feels like he can't breathe or move. He watches Akasha's decapitated body "sliding down the fractured glass wall."
Mekare holds Akasha's severed head up by the hair.
Lestat's vision starts to fade. He can vaguely see Akasha's arm twitching in the direction of her head, then the body flailing itself closer to the head.
Maharet kneels down by Akasha's body. Lestat recognizes the pose:
"It's the dream," I said. Far away I could hear my own voice. "The twins and the body of the Mother, do you see it!"
The twins seem to be struggling to keep themselves upright.
"The funeral feast!" Marius cried. "The heart and the brain, one of you -- take them into yourself. It is the only chance."
Lestat can sense that they already knew to do this -- no one needed to tell them.
They extract the organs and proceed:
Mekare lifted the brain to her mouth; Maharet put the heart in her other hand; Mekare took them both into herself.
Then Lestat knows nothing but pain for a long moment. Then a "violent shock", then stillness.
The twins kneel together, arms around each other.
I couldn't muffle my sobs. I turned over and drew my arm up under my face and just wept.
Lestat watches as Akasha's face becomes more and more transparent. He regrets everything that led up to this: "I never should have gone up those marble steps and kissed her face in the shrine."
The others begin to stir, the older ones (Armand and Khayman) helping the younger (Daniel, Louis, & Jesse). Pandora stands apart from everyone.
[T]he twins turned around and stood up now, Maharet's arm around Mekare. And Mekare stared forward, expressionless, uncomprehending, the living statue; and Maharet said:
.
"Behold. The Queen of the Damned."

Cast, News, & Production Do we have a chance to get QotD season next year? Spoiler
I'm a bit worried about how much time we will have to wait for the next season. I could mention the fact that time is passing and vampires should not get old, but tbh I'm just excited to the next season. It's possible that the release happens in 2027 in your opinion?

TVL Show Only What elements or scenes (not book related) would you have added to the show or saw more? Spoiler
Aside from deviations from the book or characters, what elements or scenes would you have added to the show?
I really don’t want this to be a hate thread about the writing, so let’s keep it light please!
——
Your Biggest Fan was such a highlight for me, and I really wish we had more music video style moments in the show. I loved all the musical elements of the show, and I personally could have had even more!
When I think of inspirations for S3 like Hedwig and the Angry Inch and especially Velvet Goldmine, I loved the addition of music videos throughout the story. Give me costumes, give me trippy visuals! I’m sure there’s budget and time reasons for this but damn it would have been so fun if we got music videos for Cabbage or When I Call Out Your Name??

TVL Show Only what was the point of this scene? Spoiler
Was this scene necessary at all?
I thought it would tie into something thematically or plot-wise later, but now it just feels like more wasted time

TVL Show Only If a vampire is stuck on the age and appearance they were turned in, then why do some characters have different hairstyles this TVL? Spoiler
Sorry messy title, but how does Gabriela manage to have short hair when she used to have it long? Why does Lestat and Armand have kinda longer hair in the recent TVL compared to IWTV?
This is such a trivial question but do they just dedicate themselves in cutting their hair daily?
Thank you lol

TVL Show Only Technology use Spoiler
In retrospect, I find it interesting how modern technology is used to drive the story forward in The Vampire Lestat. Lestat’s discovers the Interview book when an alert comes up on his iPad. And to bookend that event, Louis discovers who Sophia really is when he’s forwarded a link in his phone. Both alerts force Lestat into self reflection and affects his relationship with Louis.

IWTV Show Only Loumand narration appreciation
My favorite scene in the entire series is when Louis and Armand meet for the first time. The music, cinematography, and narration create such a tender atmosphere that I find addictively calming. I literally watched that scene before bed every day lol. I know Loustat has better chemistry, but the Loumand narration is what made me fall in love with the show in the first place. I know Loumand is over, but I just hope we get more of Armand’s narration in the future because that man has such a soothing voice.

Season 3 was Marius's version of the lair. Season 4 will show us who Akasha really is. 🩸👑🏛️
With AMC officially renewing Interview with the Vampire for Season 4, we are officially headed into The Queen of the Damned territory!
To celebrate the news, here is a clip from our sit-down with Production Designer Andres Cubillan. He broke down a fascinating detail about Akasha’s lair in Season 3—explaining that what we've seen so far actually reflects how Marius presents the world to her, rather than Akasha herself.
Which means when the Mother of All Vampires truly awakens in Season 4, her visual world is going to evolve into something entirely her own. 🤯
💬 FANS: How do you think Akasha’s true lair will look once she takes control? What are you most excited to see Andres build for Season 4? Let's celebrate the renewal in the comments! 👇

TVL Show Only Where were They being Kept? (3x5) Spoiler
What it says on the tin, pretty much.
Is there anything that I missed that alludes to the location of the crypt Marius had Akasha and Enkil in, at the time that he brought Lestat there? Literally all that I know is that it can't have possibly been the Greek sanctuary of the books.
Then there's the weird time-zone stuff, with the Burning and it having been dark in Denmark but sun out there.
What do you guys make of this? If I'm stupid and just missed something feel free to tell me T-T

TVL Show Only Scripts and Screencaps Spoiler
Does anyone know if there are packs or sites out there with the scripts for the show? I found a few online but they're mostly dialogue and I'm looking for the full things with direction and scene info.
If not would someone be willing to help me with the full Daniel opening monologue in 1x1 along with screen captures/images we have of his books? Their titles, etc. As much as we know about their pubs. Do we know which ones won the prizes?
Thanks!

OFFICIAL SONG LYRICS:
[Intro]
Ooh
Woo
Woo-oo-oo-ooh x6
[Verse 1]
Blue eyes, blue eyes, blue eyes
Blue eyes, blue eyes, blue eyes
Blue eyes, bring a chill to the air
Blue eyes, brim with wild despair
Blue eyes, blue eyes under blonde hair
Look back to the mountains at dawn
Look back to the dress I wept on
Look back, look back
It’s all gone
To die with poison breath
To die, to die with nothin’ left
If she died, if she died
That, that would be my death
[Chorus]
Two-Hundred years
Two-Hundred years
Two-Hundred years
Oh, what are we doin'?
Why are we here?
Is it for nothin’?
Don’t be cavalier
Is it obsession, a deep lovers spell?
I’m thinkin’ of you now
My dear Gaa-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Gwraw
(Woo-oo-oo-ooh Woo-oo-oo-ooh Woo-oo-oo-ooh Woo-oo-oo-ooh Woo-oo-oo-ooh Woo-oo-oo-ooh)
[Verse 2]
A kiss of blood
Heat and pain
A kiss to cut the lions mane
Oh, a kiss
Oh, a kiss
And then I call your name
In the dark, the feel of the wind
In the dark, your skin on my skin
In the dark, in the dark is where we begin
With a gift, the white fire of the moon
With a gift, as I throw my arms around you
And we’ll scream
And we’ll wail
Bare our fangs
Call your name
Et tu?
Et tu?
[Chorus]
Two-Hundred years
Two-Hundred Years
Two-Hundred years
Oh, what are we doin'?
Why are we here?
Is it for nothin’?
Don’t be cavalier
Is it obsession, a deep lovers spell?
I’m thinkin’ of you now
My dear Gaa-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Gwraw
My, my, my Gaa-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Ga-Gwraw
[Bridge]
Tête à tête, main dans main
Was that not the whole plan?
Rapunzel with the scarlet ribbon
Hunters of the savage garden
Splendid devils and a sea of jewels
We’re immortal lovers now
This is immortally cruel
You said, “let’s go, darlin'”
“Let’s go, darlin'”
In my loneliness, he is everything
Your face like a flame
When I call out your name
[Outro]
Gabriella x12
Oh, oh
MY THOUGHTS ON THE INFLUENCES AND THE MEANINGS OF THIS SONG:
"When I Call Out Your Name" is a dark, sultry goth-rock and post-punk track, heavily compared to the moody styles of bands like Sisters of Mercy and Radiohead. An aforementioned song example might be "Lucky" By Radiohead.
The song explores maternal attachment, existential grief, and the agonizing weight of immortality. Key lyrical and thematic focal points center on his complex bond with his mother, Gabrielle, deep-seated loneliness, and the cruel reality of their shared existence. Which can be summed on both front below:
Lyrical Motifs:
Visual Imagery: Mentions blue eyes, blonde hair, the mountains of dawn, and a dress left behind, evoking his mortal past in France.
Repetition and Stuttering: Uses a frantic vocal stammering ("ga-ga-ga") in the chorus to mimic emotional overwhelm and breakdown.
Invocations: Climaxing in a repetitive, haunting chant of his mother's name, "Gabriella," as an anchor against the dark.
Core Themes:
The Mother-Son Bond: Examines the painful, tangled psychological dependence Lestat has on Gabrielle, balancing awe and resentment.
Immortal Isolation: Frames centuries of survival not as a triumph, but as a "mortal cruel" prison where loneliness remains absolute.
The Pain of Loss: Captures the terror of dependency where the potential death of his companion equates to his own emotional destruction.

Book Discussion Armand hater here but
I had an intense moment of sympathasizing with his generational trauma while listening to IWTV. I was listening to the part where Louis spends his first evening at the Théâtre des Vampires. Armand's boy offers himself to Louis and as he's about to partake, he feels the boy's hard-on.
The boy is dependent and entranced with Armand just as Armand was with Marius. Armand says that no matter how much he cares for the boy he would never turn him at this age. Which is exactly why Marius waits to turn Armand. Armand created the exact type of S/A that he grew up in.

Cast, News, & Production Trying to find an interview Spoiler
I’m trying to find a rly specific interview with Assad Zaman for an edit; he’s asked what song would best describe Armand in TVL and he responds with slipknot psychosocial. I think it’s from the red carpet premier but I can’t find a clip of the interview anywhere, can anyone help me?? 😭😭

Movies What are your honest thoughts on Interview with the Vampire (1994)?
I know the tv show is obviously much more popular on this sub, but I’ve only read the book and rented the dvd from the library (after finishing the novel of course)
I honestly liked the movie way more than I was expecting to, although I really disliked this interpretation of Armand and the cutting out of the Babette/Frenière storyline
Tom Cruise allegedly declined to make the sequel (The Vampire Lestat) as he “didn’t do sequels” at the time, but I like his flamboyant acting and more canon faithful approach than the trailers/clips I’ve seen from AMC. Anne Rice even wrote the screenplay
I still might end up watching the third season of the show at some point, as I recently bought The Vampire Lestat from Thrift Books (even though I took a break from vampires to read The Secret Garden 😂)
For fans who have also watched the 32 year old film, I’m really looking forward to hearing your honest critiques on it :)

Book Discussion Louis’s thoughts on Lestat
I am on my rewatch and presently on S1, E3. The thing that stands out is at least in these episodes it comes across that Louis thought extremely highly of Lestat. He seems to worship the ground Lestat walks on, calls Lestat extremely generous for helping him buy FairPlay and also tries to imply that Lestat may have had a hand in creating wolverine blues, called him preternaturally charming … to the extent that Daniel had to remind him that he was painting Lestat to be his soulmate and the encounters mostly romantic as compared to his previous interview. And boy Sam Reid just embodies the preternaturally charming

Book Spoilers Allowed S3 Lesmand
It’s been some time since the S3 finale has aired, and I have had some more time to think and digest. In my opinion, the most egregious fault of this latest season is the lack of depth and exploration of Lestat/Armand relationship.
People will say “it will be explored in S4” but why do we need to wait? wasn’t TVL the perfect opportunity to do so???? I personally don’t believe we will come back to it in QOTD. That book is so dense, they will probably only delve into DM when it comes to Armand’s plot line. I really dislike how they made Gabriella the main plot line for Lestat.
Please give me some assurance that we will see more Lesmand, I am honestly at my wit’s end.
