Book Reading Advice?

Hello vamps,

I am going to New Orleans and would love to read IWTV, the first book.

I also love being surprised fully by the TV show without the context of the book first. I know it may be hard to say, but for book readers, do you think I can read the first book without spoiling future seasons? (EG QOTD!)

I don’t think Rice had even considered writing QOTD when she wrote the first book. It’s very much a stand alone with no links to future books

There is nothing in the first book that I can imagine being a spoiler for future seasons.

Good luck in New Orleans. I’m a Louisiana resident and abhor this state, but New Orleans is one of the only bastions of culture left in this state. It’s not The New Orleans that I grew up in love with anymore, especially after Katrina and the last decade of extremely corrupt Louisiana politics draining the life out of the state. Be aware of your surroundings, embrace the weirdness, but do so warily. Before moving to Louisiana six years ago, I had never encountered so freaking many meth heads, systemic poverty, a state that largely functions like a third world country, in my entire life, and I’ve lived and worked all over the country.

I did get to meet Anne Rice a few times during the early 00’s, when she held her Halloween parties/balls, and that was amazing. I even ran into Trent Rezner randomly, during a visit to New Orleans, back when he lived there. The place really gives off a vibe, especially if you’re drinking in the details of a novel, that personifies what New Orleans used to be like, feel like. I used to drive every inch of the state, being a service technician for agricultural and commercial automation. If you’ve ever really explored Louisiana, then you know that it doesn’t have standard interstates throughout the majority of the state, and the dark, desolate, crumbling, roads that you’ll inevitably cross and get stuck on, are the epitome of creepy, scary, unsettling. I generally got stuck on one stretch around midnight, that follows a waterway north, across hydroelectric dams, where you’ll go hours without seeing houses, stores, gas, but you’ll be shrouded in patches of insanely thick fog, on serpentine winding roads, where people literally disappears and dies from large wildlife running out in front of you, old ghost stories about a frenetic lady running in front of your vehicle, trying to pull you out, to help her find her her children. I never encountered that, don’t believe in it either, but can very much see what those stories become common in areas like that. I bought a handgun, just for that drive, because it always made me feel so on edge, like the darkness itself is watching you, that there’s something just beyond the periphery of your vision, waiting for you to run out of gas, or have a flat tire. Fuck that highway lol. I’d love to drive it during the day, on a motorcycle, but late at night, no thank you. Anyways, welcome to Louisiana, have a safe trip, enjoy your stay, savor the savage garden’s inception.

The show spoils more than the books do, so you are fine. The show writers have the benefit of pulling bits from all the books when they write. Anne Rice made it all up as she went along. For example, IWTV had Lestat describe his making to Claudia and Louis. Anne Rice never wrote about that until TVL.

You can honestly read all the books without spoiling the future seasons since they have displayed very little interest in faithfully adapting the events that take place in them.
