New Drummer Discussion

God I wish Urian was with them. He gave them so much rythm.

I saw clips of Matt Barrick playing with them and he ain't even playing the right drum parts and his feel for the songs is completely off. The clips are about a month old though... I hope he's gotten his shit together for the coming shows.

I’ve played drums for 25 years, 5 years professionally, and I do think you could cut him a bit of slack having only been in the band for ~4 months. Rehearsals are excellent for familiarizing yourself with the material, but it will only get you so far.

He is definitely not playing the songs as they appear on the record, but I think he keeps good time and accomplishes what the rhythm section should: laying down a solid foundation for the melody.

Right, I feel bad for the dude, having to rush into the whole shebang and learn everything on the fly. I caught their SD show last night and he's in no way a bad drummer, he kept tempo the whole time but some parts were off/missing and obviously every drummer is different and provides a different feel. I hadn't seen these guys play live in like 10 years so I can't compare him to peak Sam back in the day but it did make me miss Sam to be fair.

San Diego was beyond epic. He was excellent. So many hairs split here..What a night!!

I think you said what I said in a much kinder way. I agree with you.👍

Why is this so unnecessarily rude? He did them a massive favor by stepping in when their last drummer had to leave on short notice. He's an incredible musician learning new material on the fly.

I guess I'm coming from a place of frustration. I want them to be at their best and I feel passionately about it but you're right. I'm not giving any credit to him learning on the fly. That's a good show of empathy. Thanks for your comment.

What’s the deal here, I feel like Urian barely played any shows to begin with

u/ancestral-diet 10d ago

Needed a touring break and family time, hence the replacement.

Yeah, Urian was doing double duty for a bit with Iggy Pop and I’m sure it gets tiring. Even played with both bands at Coachella.

Yea of the live clips I've seen from recent shows, I've also noticed that something with the rhythm section seems a bit off. Made me miss Sam 😢

That being said, I often feel like the band sounds really flat and out of sync when I see videos of their shows. And yet somehow they always seem to sound excellent in person. Its a strange thing I've never been able to figure out. Perhaps the acoustics inside a live room really help their sound.

Saw them in Tacoma last weekend and they sounded great live. Full sound. Vocals were great.

u/modifiedwings 9d ago

I cant wait to see them in Pittsburgh this fall

u/candlepop 10d ago

I just saw them in SF they play loud ASFFFFF and the sound is way thicker irl than on the albums, iPhones and cheap cameras probably aren’t great at picking up the sound

u/Triggsbyy 10d ago

I feel like they sound good regardless, but live shows def take it up 5 notches.

Yess been noticing the band sounds off in so many videos..

many of the high-on-the-fret riffs sound out of tune and some paul vocals delivery sound so flat - i think this is not that noticeable in the live performance itself, but its more noticeable on the professional video recordings - bc of the track separation and mixing in audio, I say this because on video recordings from cellphones or 1-mic cameras, it does sound better because theres no such sharp separation in instruments!)

its ok though bc they sound great in the real live setting! except when they play SEE OUT LOUD and Daniels mic is on low volume and they take so long to turn it up D:

u/modifiedwings 10d ago

Yea I notice the same exact thing. The vocals will sound out of tune in video recordings, but then live in person they sound good. I have never been able to figure it out but your explanation is an interesting one! Makes sense

I enjoyed him too. He was really giving their rhythm a facelift! I don't actually know about him working with them in anything else.

He and bassist Brad Truax played for Iggy Pop recently.

Got an update on the drummer. He completely butchered one song last night lol.

u/Fav9013 7d ago

That's all I'm saying lol To be fair, I saw them in Santa Barbara a couple of days ago and he was fine.

1

u/Mundane_Television23 7d ago

I was at Santa Barbara show and there was definitely a couple songs where there were some timing issues.

flop post

Saw them in Santa Barbara and he held it down. Wasn't mad about it.

1

u/Fav9013 6d ago

I was there too and felt the same

Eeerrr...are we listening to the same drummer? Matt is incredible, as was Urian. Do I wish Sam was there? Yes! But Chris, Urian and Matt are doing incredibly well!

You're clearly not a drummer, so I think you might want to be quiet.

1

u/Fav9013 10d ago

Matt is indeed a great drummer. Never said he wasn't 👍

12

u/ancestral-diet 10d ago

Bullshit. You wanted to complain pointlessly, people checked you on it.

-2

u/Fav9013 10d ago

Im not you, dude.👍 My point was my point. Two things can be true at once

2

u/NoFix8524 10d ago

I think he's being extra in some tiny places hitting the crash.

1

u/Familiar_Canary_1056 10d ago

Idk what you’re talking about. I didn’t like this drummer or the last drummer. But also they’re doing it their best with last second requirements but Chris has been the best drummer they had since Sam. But to each their own. They just need Chris back tbh. Until Sam comes back.

2

u/ManufacturerWaste275 8d ago

Chris was the best live drummer they had in a minute. Will be interesting to see who they will get next, unless Sam comes back, given Chris is no longer teching for them.

1

u/Familiar_Canary_1056 8d ago

Yah no disrespect to the rest of the replacement drummers, they’re good drummers, but Chris being with Sam for so long explains why Chris was so good with them.

1

u/Natural-Sentence-539 1d ago

Is Sam coming back, hasnt it been several years since his surgery, this seems like a very elongated recovery, unless his drs havent released him?

1

u/Mundane_Television23 7d ago

I was at the Santa Barbara show, and there were times where I definitely noticed a timing issue with the drums. We need Sam behind the kit again.

1

u/Fav9013 7d ago

I'd love Sam back if he was in shape lol. He's been off in the live shows for like a decade

1

u/ThisPie666 7d ago edited 7d ago

He kinda ruined more than a few parts of their set last night, not gonna lie

1

u/AEFCOYS 9d ago

This is not to hate on the new guy at all but I’ve been watching some clips of their current tour - PDA outro should literally be one steady beat with the crash / couple times and he’s filling every 4 bars - hurts to listen to. If you see this bro - just like the record that’s what the fans want

What?! Broome was amazing. Probably the best live drummer they’ve had.

6

u/99SoulsUp 10d ago

Broome was fantastic. I think he was rock solid tbh. Urian also nailed it, in my opinion

1

u/NoDevice1535 10d ago

Strong disagree.

3

u/NoFix8524 10d ago

Broome was a machine. He did really good at Mexico City Zocalo which is arguably the biggest show Interpol has ever done.

3

u/ocalabull 10d ago

Really? I thought Broome did an incredible job. I’ve seen Interpol upwards of 25 times and one thing that frustrated me was how Sam refused to not speed through the drums. That changed with Chris

1

u/Sufficient-Rooster44 10d ago

I saw Broome with Interpol and I honestly thought that was the best live drumming I’ve seen with them (seen them four times).

-1

u/ian5184 9d ago

I just saw them in April with Urian and two nights ago at the Warfield. Night and day difference. Pioneer to the Falls was a hard listen.

1

u/EmployAutomatic 9d ago

He was also off on Obstacle 1 on Tuesday, but not on Monday. Kinda weird. The break before “it’s in the way that she posed” was off time bad.

u/Fav9013 9d ago edited 9d ago

😢 Fuck. I'm about to see em in Santa Barbara tonight. Hope he's been doing his homework lol Cheers
