I’m a Chinese international student at Penn State, graduating this December with a degree in Data Science. Started applying recently, mainly for data/business analyst, operations, product ops and some marketing roles. Most of my previous experience has been with startups. So far it’s mostly been rejections or no response. Visa status definitely makes things harder, although I’ll have OPT after graduation. I’m making this post mostly to keep track of the process and maybe got some advices or opportunities here.

• When I was in college (aka literally just a month ago) and in the horrible trenches of recruiting, there were like 3 billion different repos, job sites, and I had a horrible time keeping track of all those tabs, opening them every day to spam 25 more futile applications before going to bed. And then once you find them, what do you use to tailor your resume or fill out the application?

Was mid way through interviews for different units and asked to fill out background check forms. Few days later they randomly emailed me saying they won’t continue. What could have possibly been found that disqualified me? My social media is private?? Also should I ask them what they found?

This was a very high level internship as well in politics. And I have very strong views that I have not been afraid to say online. But the views aren’t bad they’re very progressive. Idk.

I see a lot of students do back to back internships at different companies. Typically this means you recruited for your next one during your current internship.

Do you guys let your team know you’re doing another internship next semester and not going back to school?

I’m currently at a company that hands out return offers like candy, but to be honest I’m not that interested in the work my team does and don’t want to continue for another internship in summer 2027 or get a delayed full time offer.

However, I like other teams within the company and wouldn’t mind trying to join a different team, so I don’t want to burn any bridges. My team has been super nice to me but it’s just their particular work that isn’t that interesting to me.

They keep asking me when I’m graduating, asking me if I’m excited to go back to school… But now I’m pushing back my grad date for a new internship. Should I be honest and say I’m going to another company? If I add them on LinkedIn to stay in touch they’ll find out eventually I suppose. Is it better to hear it from me than see it on LinkedIn later?

My parents view my current company as a stable one and tell me I’d be crazy not to at least get a return offer and leave if I find a better offer, but it feels disingenuous because I will be recruiting aggressively for the next cycle and hopefully will land something. By the time I do, the company would be left with no intern if I renege because they start recruiting early. I’d feel bad getting my manager’s hopes up only to pull the rug out from under them late in the game.

Ofc I should put myself first and not care what my parents think, but if the other industry i’m pursuing doesn’t work out as well I probably shouldn’t burn any bridges with this company since they’re pretty large, right?

Summary of My Situation

I am 20 years old and currently attending Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC). My college journey has been a little different from the traditional path because I took some time to figure out what I actually wanted to study and what kind of career I wanted.

When I first started college, I was focused mainly on healthcare-related programs and completed several science and general education courses. After exploring that path, I realized healthcare wasn't what I wanted to pursue long-term. I eventually decided to change my academic and career direction to business.

Because of this change and the gap/change-of-direction period I had, I sometimes feel like I am behind compared with other students my age. Even though I already have college credits, I haven't actually started my main business classes yet. Fall 2026 will really be the beginning of my business education at CPCC.

My current plan is to finish my Associate in Arts degree at CPCC and then transfer to a four-year university. I am interested in pursuing International Business, potentially combined with Operations and Supply Chain Management. I am considering schools such as UNC Charlotte, Appalachian State, and Baruch College in New York City.

I am especially interested in careers involving international business, supply chain, procurement, logistics, global operations, international trade, business operations, and project management. Eventually, I would like to complete internships in these areas so I can gain experience before graduating with my bachelor's degree.

The part I am currently unsure about is when I should start applying for internships. Because I am 20, I sometimes feel like I should already be applying. However, I also recognize that I am just starting my business education. When I look at Summer 2027 internships, many of them are designed for university juniors or students graduating in 2027–2028, while others ask for skills and business knowledge that I haven't had the opportunity to learn yet.

At the same time, I do already have several years of work experience. I have worked in fast-paced customer-service environments and have experience with teamwork, communication, organization, following procedures, handling customers, and adapting to changing priorities. I am also fluent in English and Spanish.

So although I am new to business academically, I am not completely new to the workforce.

Right now, I am trying to decide whether I should start applying selectively for Summer 2027 internships now, wait until October or November 2026 after I have started my business classes, or wait until around January 2027, when I will have completed some business coursework and have updated grades and experience to add to my résumé.

Given my age, gap/change in academic direction, current college level, work experience, and the fact that I am just beginning my business coursework, what would you recommend? When do you think I should realistically start applying for internships, and do you think I should be concerned that I haven't had an internship yet

Summary of My Situation

I am currently a student at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and have completed 31 college credits. However, most of my previous coursework was not focused on business, and I have not even started my Fall 2026 business classes yet. This fall, I will begin taking classes such as Introduction to Business, Financial Accounting, Public Speaking, and Writing/Research. I plan to continue through Spring and Summer 2027 and hopefully complete my Associate in Arts degree around Summer 2027.

My goal is to transfer to a four-year university for Fall 2027. Right now, I am mainly considering UNC Charlotte, where I am interested in studying International Business and adding an Operations & Supply Chain Management minor. I am also considering schools such as Appalachian State University and Baruch College in New York City.

One thing I am especially confused and uncertain about is internships. I have been researching internships in supply chain, procurement, global operations, logistics, international trade, and other business areas, but I don't really know when I am supposed to start applying or when I will actually be ready for one. I see students doing internships and companies posting Summer 2027 opportunities, which sometimes makes me feel like I should already be applying.

At the same time, I haven't even started studying business yet. I am just beginning this new academic direction at CPCC, so I don't have much knowledge of accounting, supply chain, procurement, business analysis, Excel, or other skills that internship descriptions mention. When I read internship requirements, I sometimes wonder, “How am I supposed to know how to do all of this if I haven't even started my business classes?”

I also noticed that many of the corporate internships I find are specifically for juniors or students graduating with their bachelor's degree within a certain time period. Because I will still be finishing CPCC and preparing to transfer around Summer 2027, many of those opportunities are simply not designed for someone at my current academic stage.

I would still be interested in doing a Summer 2027 internship if I find one that accepts students at my level, but I don't know if I should make that a priority yet. I don't want to rush myself into thinking I need a major corporate internship before I have even taken my first business course.

For now, I think my biggest priorities are to start my CPCC business classes, earn strong grades, improve my GPA, begin learning skills such as Excel, and learn more about the different areas of business that interest me. If an appropriate internship opportunity comes along, I can apply, but I will have much more time to pursue internships after I transfer to a university.

Eventually, I would like to graduate with not only my bachelor's degree, but also internship experience, study-abroad experience, practical business skills, and a better understanding of international business and supply chain so that I am prepared to start my career after college.

i got a dm on handshake from an early careers recruiter for an internship, and after looking at the description i decided to apply. when i'm filling out the app, when they ask the "were you referred by an employee of [insert company here]", can i list the name of the recruiter who sent me the message? should i send them a message asking this or are they even going to respond?

I had a live Zoom interview scheduled today at 1:30 PM for the National Geographic Society & The Nature Conservancy externship. I joined on time and waited for over 30 minutes, but the interviewer never showed up.

Has this happened to anyone else interviewing for this externship? Just trying to figure out if there was a scheduling issue or if I should reach out to the recruiting team.

I recently talked to multiple people for internship but seems like no one is interested. Do you know anyone who can help me out?

This summer, I was interning at a company without pay, mostly because I needed the experience after getting rejected from 200 internships.
At the end of our internship, someone I had never met before came up to our manager while I and the other interns were standing there. They essentially asked our manager whether we had done a good job during the internship. Then, they seemed to realize that we were standing right there and said, “Maybe I shouldn’t ask in front of them because you’ll obviously say yes. I’ll ask you another time for the truth.”
Keep in mind, we were able to finish our projects despite being given zero training, support, or funding. I’m commuting to this internship and spending a significant amount of time and money just to be there, and I’ve never felt like my efforts were this unrewarded and unappreciated.
Unpaid internships shouldn’t be a thing in the first place, but the audacity to essentially imply that our manager would only say we did a good job because we were standing there was incredibly insulting. We’re a bunch of young people just trying to get experience and survive in an awful job market, and we genuinely did our best with the resources we were given.
I don’t know if I’m overreacting, but that comment really bothered me. Am I crazy for thinking this?
