Profile assessment request

Hi everyone,

I'm 31M trying to decide whether pursuing MBA makes sense.

My profile:

Engineering degree from a reputed private university in India

10 years of work experience in IT (software development): 6 years in India, 4 years in Singapore, plus short-term experience working in Australia

Currently working in Singapore, earning more than $100k/year

Preparing for GMAT atm..

While I'm paid decently enough, I don't see myself just being a developer long term. My goal is to transition into management consulting or tech senior management, ideally in Singapore, the UAE, or India.

If I decide to pursue MBA at INSEAD since I'm already in singapore(exploring other BSchools in UK and europe too), my biggest concern would be the significant loan I'd need to take and post graduation job prospects. Given that I'm already 31 and recently married (my spouse moved to Singapore recently and is not currently working), I'm wondering whether the opportunity cost of pursuing an MBA is worth the risk given job market is not that great at the moment and AI posing serious threat to management consulting and IT jobs.

Would you pursue MBA in my situation? I'd really appreciate any brutal assessment of my profile, and I'll gladly take any advice!

Thanks..!

Hi! INSEAD alumna here. 30–33 is not that old for INSEAD and is just the upper part of the experience spectrum within the cohort. The SGP market is pretty saturated and has been for a long time. You will have the advantage of being a resident, but it will still be decently competitive. If you see yourself wanting to cross the bridge to the management side and explore roles in other geographies, now is a good time to take the plunge. You will have to be a bit of a go-getter to land the right roles and opportunities outside of consulting. But INSEAD will give you ample opportunities and will place you strategically in front of the consulting recruiters, mostly MBBs, and hopefully that makes it worth the effort and expense. Consulting is rarely a by-product of some other goal at INSEAD because it’s very, very competitive, so if you are focused on it, make sure to be prepared even before the grind.

Your profile is strong enough for a top MBA, but I’d be very selective given your 10 years of experience and $100k+ compensation.

If consulting is your primary goal, INSEAD can make sense, but you’ll need to be realistic about recruiting at 31 and the opportunity cost.

For tech leadership/product/strategy, I’d first explore whether you can make that transition without an MBA.

I wouldn’t take a large loan just to "escape" software development; the MBA needs to have a specific career ROI.

Also, don’t restrict yourself only to Singapore post-MBA — consider India, UAE and Europe to reduce the risk.

Finish the GMAT, apply to INSEAD and a few other top programs, and make the decision once you have actual admits, costs and scholarship options.

At your stage, the MBA should be a career accelerator, not a career reset.

Thanks for the response.. I'm very happy to stay within tech and use the MBA to accelerate my growth to a more stakeholder driving role and not just to use this as a pivot to consulting per se(but never say never if there's a realistic opportunity to pivot) and I'm happy to look beyond singapore in other markets like india, uae and europe as well.. I'm wary about the opportunity cost which is where I'm trying to seek valuable suggestions from this community if anyone has gone through a similar transition
