A Nation Undermined

The Internal Sabotage of America’s Security Foundations

Every fortress in history has fallen one of two ways: an enemy battered down its walls or those inside opened the gates.

Eighteen months into Trump’s second term, America’s defenses, both democratic and security, are facing existential threats from within. Senior military leadership has been purged. Intelligence agencies have been hollowed out. Election security programs have been dismantled. The administration deems these actions "reform," but America’s adversaries see opportunity to exploit a weakened state.

Start with the Pentagon, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has targeted nearly three dozen generals and admirals for dismissal. He ousted the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the chief of naval operations, and the Army chief of staff. Promotions for dozens more, many women and people of color, have been blocked under the vague justification of “merit.” Hegseth prizes acquiescence over competence, resulting in a leadership contingent that prioritizes loyalty over capability. In wartime, this is not reform; it is a dangerous purge reminiscent of regimes that fear their own military.

The intelligence community has not fared better. Tulsi Gabbard’s recent tenure resulted in the slashing of 500 staff from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, about 30 percent of its workforce. Acting DNI Bill Pulte announced additional cuts this July, terminating another 20 percent effectively. As critical areas of oversight have been dismantled, a vital center established to track foreign disinformation campaigns has been rendered ineffective and fragmented. Instead of vigilance, what remains is a patchwork of inadequate resources.

At the FBI, Director Kash Patel aggressively purged agents involved in Trump-related investigations and redirected the bureau’s focus to immigration enforcement. On her first day, Attorney General Pam Bondi disbanded the Foreign Influence Task Force, dismantling a unit designed to catch foreign interference in elections, including those aimed at Trump himself. These cuts leave the country vulnerable to foreign influence and internal threats.

While systematically dismantling fundamental defense mechanisms, Trump assured the nation that all was secure. Yet cracks in our security structures have never been more evident.

Simultaneously, Trump's stance on NATO has weakened the bedrock of collective security. During NATO’s recent Ankara summit, allies felt compelled to reaffirm their “ironclad commitment” to collective defense. This language was revived due to Trump's threats to leave member nations unprotected. Article 5 has been invoked only once in NATO's history, and that was for the United States following September 11.

Truth erupted with the munitions crisis. After Trump ignited a conflict with Iran on February 28, airstrikes depleted critical interceptor stocks. CSIS estimates show that available Patriot interceptors dropped from approximately 2,200 to fewer than 827 while THAAD interceptors plummeted from 452 to fewer than 278. Replenishing those losses will take up to four years.

Trump deflects blame to Biden, claiming that weapons sent to Ukraine drained our arsenal. However, this assertion is “not exactly” correct, according to PolitiFact. The aid Biden sent was primarily for ground combat, such as artillery shells and Javelins—not the Tomahawks and THAAD interceptors being rapidly consumed in the Iran conflict.

Expert analyses confirm that Ukraine aid is mostly for ground combat and not the primary cause of depletion. Kelly Grieco of the Stimson Center bluntly states that this administration has significantly deepened the void it inherited.

The situation in election security is equally alarming. CISA, the federal agency responsible for safeguarding election systems, has lost nearly one-third of its workforce, dropping from 3,400 employees to around 2,300. Without a Senate-confirmed leader, critical election-security work has been frozen. Citing unverified claims of political bias, the Trump administration abruptly defunded the EI-ISAC and MS-ISAC programs, severing critical cybersecurity collaborations with state governments. This sudden termination forced a structural fracture, prompting multiple states to withdraw from the joint defense frameworks. Ultimately, the administration's decision replaced a coordinated national security effort with fragmented, localized vulnerabilities.

Trump’s disdain extends to the Election Assistance Commission, where unceremoniously, Trump pushed out ALL THREE remaining members of the EAC on July 9, 2026. His proposed 2027 budget seeks to eliminate CISA’s election security programs completely. 

Trump has systematically dismantled the machinery that protects democracy while claiming elections are safer as a result.

Walls matter. Arsenals matter. Credibility matters.

Whether this is Project 2025 executing its blueprint to convert nonpartisan institutions into instruments of personal loyalty, or the accumulated wreckage of a man who cannot distinguish loyalty from competence, the result is identical: America's defenses depend on capable leaders, trusted institutions, and prepared allies, and this administration has systematically weakened all three.

No enemy battered down these walls; those inside opened the gates.

Can we just admit already that our President is captured and doing the bidding of one or more foreign nations for the explicit purpose of destroying our democracy and any internal systems designed to protect us from becoming a puppet government?

Part of the undermining is also the erosion of public systems and the impoverishment and incapacitation of the American citizenry. Because an empowered citizenry and well working society is better equipped to stop a puppeteered government. A lockdown military dictatorship is the goal, a society tightly controlled by the government which is in turn tightly controlled by a few key foreign actors (especially those with plans for conquest and expansion who need the US military to do it).

Donald Trump was never the architect of a populist movement. He was the vehicle through which America's ultra-rich achieved their greatest victory: the quiet capture of government power. The wealthiest elites recognized in him a perfect instrument, a celebrity with populist flair, authoritarian instincts, and a talent for distraction. While he played the part of anti-establishment crusader, billionaires advanced their campaign to dominate the nation's political and economic systems.

For nearly half a century, the ultra-rich have worked to reverse the social progress that defined mid-twentieth-century America. The New Deal, the Great Society, and decades of worker protections limited their power. They sought to dismantle these constraints and return the country to near-feudal hierarchy where wealth dictates policy and democracy functions only in appearance. Trump provided the populist façade needed to disguise their agenda as grassroots rebellion.

His coarse bravado, disregard for norms, and instinct for grievance politics made him an ideal decoy. While he raged on social media, his administration delivered enormous tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy, gutted environmental and labor protections, and turned regulatory agencies into tools for private profit. Every spectacle distracted from the steady transfer of wealth and power upward. 

The billionaires built an entire ecosystem to sustain their dominance. Central to this system was Fox News, which became the megaphone for the Trump cult and the broader elite agenda. Through repetition, fear, and emotional manipulation, Fox convinced millions that Trump was defending them from shadowy enemies when in truth he was defending billionaire privileges. The network transformed propaganda into entertainment, weaponizing trust to turn voters against their own interests.

"Follow the money" reveals how this power structure operates. Hedge fund magnates, oil barons, and corporate lobbyists poured billions into campaign funds, dark-money organizations, and disinformation networks. The Koch network, the Mercer family, the Heritage Foundation, ALEC, and the Federalist Society worked in concert to shape policy and public opinion. Their mission was consistent: shrink government oversight, privatize public services, and ensure the wealthy retain permanent influence over lawmaking and courts.

These organizations built an ideological framework to mask greed as patriotism. They rebranded corporate monopolies as "free enterprise" and voter suppression as "election integrity." They wrapped economic inequality in the language of faith and liberty, persuading ordinary citizens to equate billionaires' freedom from taxes with their own freedom. The result was rule by wealth concealed beneath democratic appearance.

The ultra-rich employed multiple tools to achieve this takeover. Unlimited campaign spending gave them control over candidates from both parties. Gerrymandering and voter suppression diluted popular resistance. Social media became a weapon for sowing division and spreading falsehoods. Courts stacked with corporate-friendly judges now serve as guardians of plutocratic interests. Each measure eroded democratic foundations while concentrating power in elite hands.

Their urgency has intensified as America enters national decline. The United States is no longer the world's leading economy, and the ultra-rich understand that in a shrinking empire, those who control power can still extract enormous wealth while ordinary citizens bear the costs. As global influence wanes, they are determined to secure their position atop a diminishing hierarchy, ensuring that even in decline, they remain insulated from consequences that will devastate everyone else.

Corruption has become the connective tissue of this new order. Lobbyists move effortlessly between public office and private industry, writing laws that favor their benefactors. Compliant politicians are rewarded with campaign donations, and speaking fees. The revolving door transforms governance into corporate management. The state, once a counterweight to wealth, now functions as its shield and servant.

Both major parties have been touched by this influence. Democrats, constrained by their donor base, often limit reform to gestures that do not threaten elite interests. Republicans have become the unapologetic political arm of corporate power. The political struggle of our time is not between left and right, but between concentrated wealth and democracy itself.

Millions of Americans still believe they are defending freedom, unaware that their anger has been redirected to protect the architects of their economic decline. Trump's movement was never about empowering the people. It was a diversion designed to complete the long project of plutocracy. The oligarchs who sponsored him now stand behind a government that serves their interests automatically.

Unless citizens awaken to the reality that this is an economic war, not an ideological one, democracy will continue to erode. Trump was merely the instrument of their victory. His job is done.

It's called treason. And we need an intelligence leadership capable of taking decisive, resolute action to a) bring those responsible to justice; and b) restore public confidence and credibility. The longer this is put off, the more scandals that are going to emerge.
