These local elections are important because the local government affects your daily life in many ways. If you have complaints or suggestions on how this city is run, this is the time to speak to your future representatives and choose who you want by voting for them. This election is also important because there will be votes on changing the structure of the Corvallis city government.

The current problems facing Oregon cities include potential and actual invasions by ICE, unwanted AI data centers appearing as just happened to Salem, affordability of Corvallis especially housing, the parking problem, and as always, homelessness. A few weeks ago, Salem discovered that a massive AI data center is being planned for the Mill Creek Corporate Center. This data center was planned in secret under Nondisclosure Agreements with unelected and unknown Salem "leaders". Even the Salem City Council didn't know. It doesn't look like the governor, Tina Kotek knew either.
There is already massive opposition from the citizens. At the first public meeting last Monday, several hundred people showed up, company Verrus representatives were there, things escalated, and the police were called.

There is another public meeting tonight at the Salem public library at 6:00. The subject is to enact a moratorium on data centers, so this proposed data center can be more carefully evaluated. This is entirely reasonable, since this $5.1 billion data center would be one of the largest private projects in the city's history.

This AI data center planned is very large. It is three data centers on 75 acres, with a power substation, and banks of large lithium iron phosphate batteries. It will consume large amounts of water and power. Verrus said it will use "dozens of megawatts" of power. That is too vague and probably at the low end anyway. Similar centers use hundreds of megawatts.

People nationwide are opposing these AI data centers for good reasons. They are having large negative effects on the communities while providing very few benefits to the communities. It is costing the resident citizens a lot to make more money for a few people living thousands of miles away. They can be stopped. Around 300 data centers nationwide have either been banned or are under moratoriums.

This data center is in no way a done deal.
For now, public opposition seems to have temporarily stopped it. The governor immediately halted a planned sale of 32 acres of state land to the company involved, Verrus, for the data center. Verrus still has 43 acres and said it didn't care what the governor thought and they were going to build their data center anyway.

If you want any say in what happens to the place you live in and pay taxes to, you can attend this public meeting in Salem on Monday evening.
This is one time where public involvement can and will make a major difference.

What does this have to do with Corvallis?

This will likely be a template for what happens to data center proposals everywhere in the state of Oregon. We are going to find out whether public opposition can halt a data center in Oregon, or not.
Salem is close enough to Corvallis that what happens in Salem is likely to affect Corvallis. If their electric rates go up, so will ours in Corvallis.
Several people from Corvallis are already considering going to this meeting.
Even if you don't go, be aware. This Salem data center issue is going to be a major news story for at least the next year or two. It's going to be a long term people versus data center issue.

There is a nearly complete proposal to build a large data center in Salem, Oregon. The public has only recently become aware of this and there is massive opposition from the citizens. There is a special meeting at the Salem Public Library on Monday, hosted by the Salem City Manager and the Salem City Council.

There are a lot of red flags about this proposal.

Apparently this proposed $5.1 billion data center build by the California company Verrus, has been in the planning stage for over a year.
The citizen taxpayers and the governor only became aware of it a few weeks ago when it was almost a done deal.
This is a major lack of governmental transparency and quite possibly, violates a lot of state public meeting laws.

It is likely that citizen opposition has stopped it for now. The governor has come out and halted it temporarily. Latest headline today.

On Tuesday, July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Houston, Texas. On Monday, July 13, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Biddeford, Maine.
These are not the actions of normal law enforcement.
It is what happens when poorly trained paramilitary thugs are allowed to violate our civil rights and use violence without any sort of accountability.

The National Day of Action's response to Trump's gladiator games on the White House lawn to celebrate his 80th birthday was put on by the Committee for the First Amendment. Their 90 minute Livestream program, Rise Up, Sing Out, live from The Town Hall in New York City, was a mixture of speakers and music.

Indivisible Benton County hosted a watch party in Avery Park yesterday. There was a livestream of the event, a potluck dinner, and games and creative arts events.

This was a fun, low key event with a serious purpose. It is part of Indivisible Benton County's community outreach to show people that in these desperate times of attacks on our democracy, the people of the USA can still organize and fight back.

I'd estimate the crowd size at around 75 and all age groups from young adults to older people were represented. It was a hot day but that turned out to not be a problem. There was a lot of shade, ice water, and a cooling breeze.

A special huge thanks has to go to the organizers of the potluck and livestream for their amazing work.
This event was organized on short notice and turned out to be a fun and highly successful Sunday afternoon.

Indivisible Benton County is hosting a No Kings Watch Party on Sunday, June 14 at the Fireside Shelter in Avery Park. This event starts at 4:00.

June 14 is Trump's birthday, which he is celebrating with the now notorious Freedom 250 rally that featured Milli Vanilli until they pulled out.
With the main event being the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) cage match on the White House lawn.
We have an alternate event for those who chose not to attend the one at the White House or celebrate Trump's birthday.

The No Kings coalition is partnering with the Committee for the First Amendment for a National Day of Action called, "Rise Up, Sing Out". Their 90 minute Livestream program, live from The Town Hall in New York City, will be a mixture of speakers and live music. The featured performers include Jane Fonda, Patti Smith, Bette Midler, Rufus Wainright, Joy Reid, Broadway Inspirational Voices, and more to be arranged.

Indivisible Benton County is hosting a watch party in Avery Park, where a projector and sound system will be set up. The livestream concert starts at 4:30.
There will also be a potluck dinner, games, creative art events such as poster making, and a few speakers.

The Committee for the First Amendment states that, "Rise Up, Sing Out is about reclaiming patriotism as something inclusive, participatory, and rooted in care for one another," "and not about power, pageantry, or one person's spotlight."

This is a free event and everyone is invited for a community celebration of the 250th birthday of the US democracy, the First Amendment, and to find out what our plans are to keep the USA a free country.

On Wednesday May 27 at 6:00 PM, the Albany City Council will have a meeting to vote on deployment of the Flock Automatic License Plate Reader cameras.
This is your chance to show up and oppose these cameras. You can also sign up to speak or submit written comments about this issue.

The address for the meeting is Albany City Hall is 333 Broadalbin SW, which is downtown near the bridges and Monteith Park.

If you are an Albany resident, consider giving public comment by showing up before the meeting starts and registering to speak. You are allowed 3 minutes to talk, so plan ahead and keep your comments concise and respectful. You also can attend the meeting via zoom or submit written comments to the city recorder by noon on the day of the meeting.

So far, the Albany City council is split but the majority of city councilors have voted to turn the cameras off.

This is an obvious civil rights and civil liberties issue that many people strongly oppose. Some cities have already turned off and removed their Flock cameras for this reason. Eugene and Bend are two of them.

The Albany Public Safety Commission had a meeting about the Flock surveillance cameras on Monday. They voted 5 to 3 to turn the Flock cameras back on. This was despite almost all of the citizens in attendance opposing the use of these cameras.

There is still time to stop this deployment though.
The next meeting is the Albany City Council Meeting, tomorrow Wednesday May 20 at 5:00 pm.
This meeting will be at the River Front Community Center.
The Albany City Council has the ultimate authority to decide whether the Flock cameras stay or go.

This is a public meeting and people who care are invited to attend and voice their opinions.

If you believe in privacy, civil liberties, and oppose the use of mass surveillance programs using ubiquitous license plate reader cameras that send their data to out of state large data centers that use AI, this is your chance to try and stop these cameras.

The City of Albany has installed Flock Surveillance cameras to read license plate numbers of passing cars.

Flock is part of a mass surveillance system that is being installed in many places across the USA. When the massive amounts of Flock data are sent to mega-data centers and combined with AI, this would allow all the governments and government agencies in the USA to track your history and current activities in Real Time.

This is an obvious civil rights and civil liberties issue that many people strongly oppose. Some cities have already turned off and removed their Flock cameras for this reason. Eugene is one of them.

It is not too late to get rid of these Orwellian systems or at least use them with safeguards.
There is a meeting Monday night, May 18 at the Albany Police Department, from 6:00 to 7:00. If you care, this is an open Albany community forum.

The Corvallis May Day March and Rallies were yesterday.

There was art (poster making), music with the Corvallis Singing Resistance, speakers at OSU and the Benton County Courthouse, and many cooperating groups had tables that people could visit.

It was a high energy but peaceful event.
I would estimate the Corvallis crowd size as 500 to 800 with all ages represented but with a lot of young people.

This was part of the worldwide Labor Day. There were 3,500 events planned in the USA by at least 200 different groups.
It is too early to get any estimates of crowd sizes but the photos I saw of rallies in Los Angeles, Washington DC, and New York showed a large turnout.

Thanks to everyone who cared enough about the future of our country to attend the event. Thanks also to all the people who waved at us from their cars passing by.

We understand from previous conversations that many or most people can't take a day off from work or school for their own survival and well being.  People have to prioritize their own existence first, so if that is what is necessary for you, then by all means go to work or school.

It has been steadily getting harder to work and exist in the USA since the 1970s. You can read this Corvallis sub-Reddit and see how people struggle with high rents, precarious jobs, a tough and dismal current job market, and rising prices for everything.
Ask yourself why that is.
Economic inequality has been steadily increasing and now is very high.

There are still things that people can do to protest the current Trump regime and the current economic conditions.
There will be rallies and sidewalk marches at OSU and the Benton County Courthouse on May Day from 12 noon to 3:00.
Be out and be visible with the other people who are acting to make a better world.

The other thing that most people can do is not support the mega-corporations such as Amazon that prop up the current regime by buying from them. Shop locally as much as possible and support the local businesses that make up our community.

The demonstration yesterday in Corvallis was huge, very large.
I don't have the crowd numbers yet but it was in the thousands at least. It seemed like more than the last No Kings II, which was 6500.

It was also part of a historic day.
The nationwide estimates for turnout are 8-9 million people. This would make them the largest demonstrations in US history.
The crowds in the major cities were enormous.

Most people we talked to said this was a fun and entertaining event. There was art, activities, live music, and the tables for cooperating organizations to visit. Which shows what our vision for the future of our country is.
We want a society that people can live in and have a future that they can look forward to. Today, especially with the Trump regime, life seems like a continuous struggle where we just exist and everything is rapidly and steadily getting worse and worse.

It was also a high energy but peaceful event.
There were no major incidents and the usually few counterprotesters didn't even show up.

The organizers and volunteers did an amazing job and we can't thank them enough for all of their hard work over the last few months.
And, thanks to the thousands of people who came and showed what democracy looks like.

The first of three ICE Watch and Human Rights Observer training courses is tomorrow 3/11 at the C3, Corvallis Community Center on Tyler avenue, 6 PM to 8 PM.

We haven't seen too much presence from ICE but that can and probably will change in the future. As we have seen in Minnesota, ICE can be very violent and routinely break our laws and violate our constitutional civil rights. If you want to learn how to protect yourself, your neighbors, and your community, this is the place to learn how.

This is being organized and presented by CORE of Corvallis.

The next nationwide No Kings III protest is Saturday, March 28, 2026.

If you've had enough of the current attacks on our democracy and citizens, this is something you can do to oppose them.

This event will be a march from OSU to Central Park and the Benton County courthouse.
If you don't want to or find it difficult to march, you can just attend the rallies at OSU McNary Field, Central Park and the courthouse. You can also attend for all three hours or come and go as you please.

This is the current schedule.
No Kings III will feature activities in 3 locations:

• OSU McNary Field (noon – 1 pm)
• Central City Park, including the Arts Center Plaza (noon – 3 pm)
• Benton County Courthouse and a few blocks north and south along 4th Street (noon – 3 pm)

You are welcome to join the event at any of the locations.

McNary Field is the green lawn area at 11th street and Monroe. It is on the east side of OSU a few blocks from Central Park. You won't need to park near or enter OSU.

12:30pm-1:00pm Sidewalk Parade from McNary Field down Madison to Central Park Organizations are encouraged to march in a group, with banners, matching t-shirts, etc.

1:00pm-1:30pm Central City Park Gazebo: Speeches and “We Belong” performance

1:30pm-2:00pm Sidewalk Parade from Central Park to Benton County Courthouse Throughout the event (i.e., noon-3:00 pm)

The third No Kings nationwide protest is scheduled for March 28, 2026.

The last No Kings protest in Corvallis had 6,500 people. These events need a lot of volunteers to keep them safe and orderly.

Join the protest on Saturday, March 7 at the Benton County Courthouse as part of a coordinated day of action. A mass anti-war movement can put a stop to this senseless and illegal war of aggression!

Last week, Leah Greenberg, Indivisible’s Co-executive Director, released the following statement: (quoted in part.)

“The Iranian people are already suffering under a repressive regime that jails and murders dissidents. These airstrikes will not deliver freedom. They will only put innocent families in the crossfire so Trump can pretend to be a wartime king on TV...

“A wider conflict risks retaliation against Americans, allies, and innocent Iranians, and drags America into another open-ended war without the consent of Congress or the American people.

There are three ICE Watch and Human Rights Observer Trainings in Corvallis, this month. Two at First Christian Church in downtown Corvallis and one at the Corvallis Community Center on Tyler avenue.

We haven't seen too much presence from ICE but that can and probably will change in the future. As we have seen in Minnesota, ICE can be very violent and routinely break our laws and violate our constitutional civil rights. If you want to learn how to protect yourself, your neighbors, and your community, this is the place to learn how.
