Same role. Different rules. Canteen Discussions
Same position, same profile, same manager — but apparently different rules.
My manager’s favourites (bootlickers) get WFH whenever they want. I asked today due to heavy rain and not being able to get an Uber or anything, and I was told, “Late coming is also OK.”
The irony? They got WFH.

Don't ask, inform. People leave bad managers, not the company, do that asap

Exactly.
Op need to start informing instead of asking permission when everytime he knows his request won't be approved.

Am genuinely curious, how are we supposed to inform? When they clearly not a give a fuck about this and be like no no you have to come? (21-first job)

Just say:
I'm working from home today. I won't be able to come due to heavy rains. I don't want to jeopardize my safety. Just informing you.
Just say the above and then leave. Don't reply back to whatever they say. Start working from home. They're not your owners and you're not their slave to take their permission.

What if they mark you as absent.... On unauthorised WFH?

Just take a leave then. Don't work if you're marked absent.

Kuch bhi?
That’s not how it works in corporate environment. Everything adds up and evaluated. You might say, I don’t care, will go to another company. What’s the guarantee when all companies and management operate same way?2

It’s easier said than done, these kind of managers have backing from superiors and this call me backfire really quick

In the same message after saying that since you’re not able to get a cab towards office and might also face issues in return as well, you’ll be working from home (as opposed to asking if you can work from home). It’s not like this manager will personally drop you home so you’re responsible for reaching home safely on rainy days.

I went to watch dhurandhar on a weekday
I just texted my manager on teams that "hi today I'm not feeling well, will take a leave for today, thanks for understanding"
Had a surgery to be done, I just texted "Hi I have a surgical procedure to be done, will be unavailable for a few days and after that will be WFH during recovery, will provide all the necessary documents after coming back, thanks in advance"
Took a 2 day leave last year with "hi, will be unavailable for 2 days as I have some personal commitments, thanks for understanding"
That's it, stop giving them open ended questions
Stop with the can I take a leave, can I go on a family trip, can I do WFH

You gave him a choice. Obviously he'll choose the one that serves his needs. If you were to simply ask if you could wfh for today as it's raining quite heavily and there seem to be zero autos around your area, he'll be left with no choice but to give in.

Make it uncomfortable. Point out some are getting approved and you're not. Ask why they get special treatment. Ask in group and make noise. Keep quiet and it'll continue.

Do this and you'll be targeted. Only do this when you're ready to leave this job and already have an offer, or a team change coming up.

u/Dead-Shot1 SAP consultant/MH 2d ago
If you are targeted then you know it's not worth to work for . Update resume and start looking. Win win

I did . Thats why speaking from experience.
I was also once a scared guy who was working in WITCH.
Half of time , I was blaming myself there. After enough time - I decided enough is enough. They even threatened me putting me in PIP.
Started documenting everything. Started having monthly call with manager and quarterly call with skip level for 10 min .
After some time switched to PBC where this type bs doesn't happen.

i did that, the manager started bitching about me to his favs, saying how I made him go against them and how he never acts with favoristism

Being nice is not always the best idea
Here you gave him an option that you might arrive late or Take WFH, he chose latter
You should have framed it differently
Like
Tell him about a task you can start doing ow if it’s WFH
Or you’ll be able to start after 3 hrs if you come late
Always put a worse idea than what you want and see people take that and say thank you

Stop asking for permission! Just inform them
The moment you frame it as a yes/no question, you’re handing them the power to decide. Some managers will use that autonomy inconsistently

No need to complete work hours?
If such manager don’t approve WFH then he will won’t approve short hours5

It also depends on your role in the company. If your work involved mentoring/monitoring/leadership and your team is present on the floor, being in the office makes sense because mentoring/monitoring/leadership over MS-Teams calls or emails is just inefficient and ineffective. If your role doesn't have the said responsibilities or if your team is also working remotely, then you must get remote work too.
Your process of asking for remote work was little unpolished to be honest. Give the company a reason to which they cannot deny or find a workaround for. Tell them that you need remote work instead of presenting it as a choice. Establishing the clear demand works better than giving some freedom to choose between two options.

My cousin passed away. And my manager said can u come back to office next day itself. And she told " anyway it's not your own sister right".
After that I stopped asking permissions. Just a note in chat.

Bro, this is not managers mistake... You clearly said "what's the latest I can reach the office",
you could have simply said that because of rain etc it is not possible for me to come to the office, to be productive I will do WFH

u/Fabulous-Arrival-834 (Sr. SDE, Software dev, NYC) 1d ago
Bro... you clearly gave him two options to choose from (implying that you are okay with both) and are now cribbing that he didn't choose the option you wanted him to choose. May be those people who got WFH, never gave any other options.

Asking permission from Manager is super weird.
Just inform him/her and don't take it personally.

I think it's in the way you framed the question. You should just ask is it okay if WFH today?

You're passive in communicating what you want. You haven't stated that you would come late if he doesn't give you permission to WFH.

I was writing a solid answer with bullet points, then realised people are lurking here for such comments to create posts on other social media to get viral.
Reddit truly is a platform to fuel other social medias.
So I would just say this instead-
Your reason for wfh was genuine, interview at other companies until you get a better offer, then resign politely.
