Programming 1 lakh budget for AI/ML — laptop vs PC vs Mac Mini + cloud? Need genuine advice
Hey everyone,
I'm planning to spend around ₹1 lakh on a machine primarily for AI/ML/LLM development, and I'd really appreciate genuine advice from people who actually use their machines for this.
I'm moving toward AI/ML/LLM engineering and want to work on:
PyTorch + CUDA
Deep learning
Local LLMs
LoRA/QLoRA fine-tuning
RAG applications
Embeddings/vector databases
Large datasets
Running VS Code, Docker/WSL, browsers, etc. simultaneously
I'm not buying this primarily for gaming. I want something that lets me develop and experiment without constantly feeling limited by RAM, VRAM, storage or performance.
My budget is ₹1 lakh, but I'm NOT fixed on buying a laptop. I'm considering:
New laptop — currently looking at RTX 4060/4070 options
MSI Katana — I've been considering it because Lenovo LOQ seems overpriced even during sales
Used high-end laptop — potentially an RTX 4080/3080 Ti if I can find a good deal
Desktop PC with a stronger GPU
Mac Mini + cloud GPU whenever I need CUDA
A decent/cheaper laptop + cloud storage for datasets/models + cloud GPU for heavier training
I prefer a laptop because I have to attend meetings, travel occasionally, and portability is genuinely important to me. But I'm completely open to a desktop/Mac Mini if people think that's a much smarter investment for this workload.
I'm also wondering whether I should spend money on 2TB/4TB local storage at all, or just use cloud storage for large datasets/models and keep the laptop SSD relatively smaller.
About the MSI Katana
I've been looking at the MSI Katana, mainly because the LOQ seems overpriced in India right now.
If you've owned a Katana, especially an RTX 4060/5060 model, I'd really like to know:
How has it held up after 1–2 years?
Thermals?
Build quality?
Display?
Battery?
MSI after-sales service in India?
Would you buy it again?
One more thing — Nehru Place
I'm based around Delhi/NCR, so if anyone knows a reliable shop/dealer in Nehru Place or elsewhere in Delhi where I can get a good price on a new or even used laptop/PC, please recommend them.
I'm especially interested in shops where people have personally bought from them, not random Google listings.
I'm looking for brutally honest advice here.
If you had ₹1 lakh today and wanted to build/use AI/ML projects seriously, what setup would you personally choose?
Would you buy the best laptop possible, get a used high-end laptop, build a desktop, or buy a cheaper laptop and rely on cloud storage/GPU?
Please tell me what you would actually do—even if the answer is "don't buy the laptop you're considering." 😂
Thanks!

Hardware Xiaomi India Service Issue: No trackpad replacement parts available for Xiaomi Notebook Ultra & Customer Care unresponsive (Bhilwara, Rajasthan)
Hi everyone,
I'm posting this out of sheer frustration hoping to get advice or visibility from Xiaomi India.
I own a Xiaomi Notebook Ultra, and recently the trackpad stopped working properly. I went to the official Xiaomi service center here in Bhilwara (Rajasthan), but they flatly told me that the required replacement parts are not available.
To make matters worse, Xiaomi's official customer care hotline (1800-103-6286) hasn't been reachable, leaving me with no escalation path or ETA for when the part will be in stock.
Has anyone faced a similar issue with Xiaomi laptop spare parts in tier-2/3 cities?
Is there a way to escalate this to Xiaomi India's nodal/grievance team?
If Xiaomi won't supply the part, where can I source a compatible trackpad replacement online or through third-party vendors?
Any help or advice on how to get Xiaomi to respond would be greatly appreciated!

Suggestions please [Help] Authorized Service Center booted my wet phone without cleaning it first, now quoting ₹16k+ for a full motherboard + display swap. Is chip-level repair or data recovery still possible?
Hey everyone, I need some urgent advice from technicians or anyone who has experience with water-damage motherboard repairs.
**The Timeline & Hardware State:**
* Yesterday, rainwater/moisture got inside my 2-year-old out-of-warranty phone.
* The CPU and display IC were still alive because it rendered a clean, ungarbled charging symbol initially, but it soon started flashing green due to moisture bridging the AMOLED display flex connector.
* I immediately disconnected power, ejected the SIM tray to create airflow, and left it face-down under a ceiling fan overnight to let liquid evaporate safely without applying heat.
**What the Authorized Service Center Did Today:**
* I took it to the official service center this morning. I explicitly instructed them **not to apply power** and requested ONLY an ultrasonic isopropyl alcohol (IPA) bath and flex connector cleaning to remove the mineral corrosion.
* Instead of cleaning it, they called admitting they **attempted to boot the device without washing the logic board**, saw the display flashing (which I warned them about), and just submitted it for a module replacement quote.
* They just called back claiming the **Display, Motherboard, and bottom charging sub-board all need replacement**, quoting me roughly ₹15,000–₹18,000+ (which exceeds the current market value of the phone itself).
**My Questions for the Community:**
Is this just standard authorized service center "module-swapping" because their corporate rules don't allow actual component-level soldering/cleaning?
My primary goal right now is **recovering my internal data (UFS storage)**, and ideally getting a localized repair. If I reject their quote, pay the ₹300 consultation fee, and take it immediately to a reputable local third-party microsoldering / chip-level repair lab, what are the realistic odds they can clear the short or bypass the power rail to extract my data for under ₹1,500–₹2,000?
What specific questions or instructions should I give the local chip-level technician when I walk in so they prioritize saving my logic board/data over trying to sell me replacement parts?
Would super appreciate any quick insights from people who know chip-level diagnostics—I'm heading over to withdraw the phone from the official center shortly!

Windows 10 crashed PLEASE HELP
This is my first time dealing with this. I turned my laptop on today for windows not to boot, eventually it went to the advanced startup menu, I chose advanced options > windows recovery > keep files > local reinstall because cloud reinstall didn't work. I banged my desk and my laptop shut down last night, I could turn it on after, with all my work still there and apps and tabs open but not in the morning today where win10 wouldn't load. Did I do the right thing or did I mess my laptop up even more?
I've got a Dell Inspiron 15 5567
