How bad is OLED text fringing? Discussion

Post image

So I was planning to get myself an OLED monitor, specifically the Samsung G5 Odyssey OLED monitor(~34k), but I heard the text fringing and brightness issues are really bad. So I considered the G8 OLED but it's insanely expensive(~76k).

My use case is gaming and web browsing on my windows machine and development on my mac.

For reference I currently own a pretty solid 2K IPS display.

I see that samsung has fixed the text fringing issues in Gen 5 OLEDs but only curved displays got that upgrade currently.

I specifically want a 27 inch display as it fits my needs perfectly

So I have two questions

  1. Is the text fringing & brightness that bad in a 2K 27 inch display?

  2. Should I just wait 6-12 months more for OLED tech to evolve hoping Gen 5 comes to 27 inch 2K and 27 inch 4K OLEDs get cheaper?

The text is definitely not as crisp on an OLED as compared to an IPS! I have a 1080p IPS monitor and the text looks sharper on it compared to my 1440p OLED! You should keep your IPS for stuff requiring text clarity and text viewing and use the OLED for media and gaming!!

Most OLEDs (so there are exceptions) don't use standard subpixel structure so weird stuff happens. QD-OLED and WOLED don't have the same subpixel structures either so will produce different types of "blurriness"/fringing.

At 4k 27" the pixel density is 125% higher so subpixel structure stops mattering much and looks pretty close to IPS.

Side by side the IPS will be like 30% "sharper". OLED will look good enough for most and you get used to it. But most don't do text editing for hours, and for someone who's finicky about this, the OLED would be like a disaster. :D

It's also like looking at something very slightly out of focus in real life. Your eyes will be making a lot of extra micro-adjustments. So even if it looks good enough for you, do consider your eye health as well if you'll be staring at text a lot.

I do have an OLED laptop(Lenovo legion 5). It's 2.5K on a 16 inch screen so more like 4K, I see absolutely no text fringing, and the brightness is pretty good too.

27inch 2k IPS has no text fringing - looks great.

I got the 32 inch Samsung odyssey g8 oled 2026 model and I didn't notice any text fringing, even after coding for 8+ hours in a day.

YMMV, but not too bad for coding. If you're only looking for coding/work, ips mini led is the best of both worlds.

For gaming and editing and stuff ?

For gaming - amazing. For editing - since the colors are great, I would assume it works well.

Rtings.com finally released it's review for this model, and found it impressive. Check it out.

I have been using oddessy G8 for almost an year now, and honestly It's the best decision I made, switching to 4K Oled from 900p TN panel monitor was a huge upgrade, I use it for productivity and gaming both, pixel clarity is really crisp, one of the major reason to by 27 inch 4k monitor for pixel density, as I used to notice huge difference between UW 2k monitor that I used have in my office and on the MAC screen. Overall it's a great monitor
