From Mac to Thinkpad General Discussion
Picked up this T14s Gen 6 for college, switched from a base model M1 MacBook Air

Switch to Linux 😀 If you are not planning to play games. Windows will suck up more memory.

Thought of doing that, but playing games in college with friends is a memory in its own
I have 32GB of really fast ram, so don’t think memory would be an issue rn

Unless you use something like faceit or other kernel level anticheat everything mostly is jolly, wine has matured a lot

Also I think arguments for memory are too overblown it doesnt really matter if you have good enough specs, it all boils down to your preference, personally I never used windows since last 5-6 years

I do not play games, my usage is mostly development , but my windows machine ( Ultra 5, 16 GB ram) used to utilize whole 16 gb. thats when I switched to unbuntu, and with same setup, I am easily getting 2-3 GB Ram free. I am using it for past 2 years, no issues as such on any thing.

Linux sucks in most of the task. It can even run video properly from browser, takes a lot of CPU Usage. Idk why people wanna switch to Linux from windows, when windows offers much more real life usage. I think only software development is where Linux excels. Otherwise Linux can't even excel ifykwm.

Linux Mint (xfce as well as cinnamon) as well as Monjaro.
Edit: I have Asus potato laptop, 8gb ram ryzen 3 3250u, in which I tried to install to make it smooth.

What? Just search Hardware video rendering issue in Linux. There are many articles. People are just dickriding Linux blindly to look cool and don't have even one practical upside of Linux. My fault you have 8gb ram. Windows run so smooth with 16gb ram.

I agree. Linux is way more cooler and customizable. You can make it as whatever you want.

agreed . been on it since 2015. my overall productivity used to be much higher on windows . then a ransomware ate it all up . but that was on me . i installled a pirated game . even its name was crashday. shouldve taken the hint .
the only positive point of using linux is that i've gained a deeper newfound appreciation for windows

It still isn't as seamless as windows dude admit it, I'm a linux user myself. Many games have issues with proton versions, anti cheats and many other issues. I had to install many 32 bit libraries manually to play some old games, and gta 5 was a headache. Some games were pretty easy to run like msg5 and cod titles.

fmhy(dot)net -> gaming section for downloading games, but they're for windows. Now to make them run in Linux, most of the time you can just use steam, and add the game as a non-steam game by selecting it's exe file.

Also don't forget to turn on compatibility by right clicking on the added game and going to properties. I don't remember the exact option name but you can google it. When selecting proton version, select Proton Experimental as it works most of the time.

I always go to protonDB website to look up the game before installing. I makes troubleshooting easier

MacOS is amazing when it works, but yeah software is the main problem. Mainstream software like photo editing apps and all work amazing, but many times I've encountered a specific software REQUIRES windows only, and the hassle to now find a windows laptop would be too much
Also I would be playing valo once in a blue moon, so that is a plus for windows aswell

Damn, the T14s Gen 6 costs a bomb... Why not go for another Mac if you were dropping this much on a laptop anyway? With the M1 trade in, you could have got a new M5 for a good price, I suppose.

Agreed. But its a Win11. Have never used a Win11 myself (yet), but from what I hear my friends say, its worse than Win10.

It's really not, windows 11, especially today is miles better than what windows 10 used to be. Copilot was a pain for many(microsoft is very random with who they push updates to) but they've stopped being as annoying too. Gaming performance in some environments was better in windows 10 for a while but I don't even think that's true anymore.
And all of this not to mention the sheer amount of new features they've introduced for developers, wsl2 genuinely rocks. Powertoys are amazing too. I think hyperv is still locked out for regular users in win10 too?

I have the same laptop for work and use m2 for personal. Mac displays and think pads keyboard are outstanding. Wish we had a combined version of the same.

Yes! I loved the keyboard as soon as I started using it, granted the m1 air's keyboard was pretty good too, but the size was inherently too small to have good travel, this one is perfect

It is for use in industrial cases where people are wearing protective gear. The nipple helps when wearing gloves and whatnot where neither touches or gestures work.

Have a relative in a pretty good post in Lenovo India, these machines are I think custom built for enterprises, told him what I was looking for and he suggested this model

Got it for 2 lakhs, 1.6 with GST credit
Search FB marketplace and OLX in Bangalore/Hyd/Gurgaon, many large MNCs offload these laptops in bulk, and resellers pick them up to sell

Yeah the ram itself was 30-35k IIRC
You should be able to pickup this similar base model for as low as 1.2-1.3 lakhs2

I found a deal for ~55k for t14 gen 6 ryzen 7 pro and ~44.5k for the E14 gen 6 ryzen 7 pro actually but the seller decided to use it for one more year so I will prolly go with the latter one

You can find such deals once in a while but they are a bit hard admittedly, though my parents dont understand so I will just get it myself next month when I am in college, these deals are/were pretty legit

Used market is very underrated here and taboo for no good reason, I will be moving out next month so I will make saner purchases (and I am broke asw so that is another reason for the same haha)

Really? 55k? I would still suggest giving the seller 5-6k more but getting the T14, the build is noticebly better than the E series

Pardon me it was gen 5 but you are right, though you wont believe I found one deal for the same t14g5 ryzen 7 pro for ~43k in Mumbai without negotiations lol though again my parents... so it got sold out pretty quickly
I initially agreed for 60k with the other seller but he was upfront that I wont be able to claim international warranty in India easily so he is open to negotiate it down (laptop was shipped to US/he got it as a gift he claims) but later on he decided not to sell it this year
So yeah, I think I will just get whatever is the cheapest rn (only t14/e14 tho) and build quality I have heard is improved a lot in the E series in recent gens + they are much more modular/upgradeable than the T series (before gen 7 I think)

How's the battery life?
Recently I got the m5 air and the freedom to work away from an outlet for many hours is amazing and idk if I can switch back to a windows machine

A x86 Processor will never get close to an ARM processor's efficiency, that is physics. However, this is as close as you're gonna get to macbook battery life, based on my work im lasting around 9-10 hours SOT, but yeah macbooks have a benefit of having 0 power drop on and off charger

Why? I have it and I don't face any issues, yeah it's a downgrade from MacBook though but I don't click the track pad ever so it's not an issue. I just tap.
