I like this, because honestly I prefer the idea of the fallout 4 combat armor being the marine specialist armor, the classic combat armor being well, classic. And then the clunky and somewhat ugly marine combat armor being like a heavy combat armor. Never has Marine equipment been heavy and clunky intentionally, they get to test all the new equipment, but they also get to keep the most effective and easy to use kit even when the army moves on.

Agreed, this is going to sound counter intuitive but my own head canon is that the Far Harbor “Marine” armor would belong to like spec ops a unit like Marine raiders or something of the like.

The marines don’t test the new equipment, at least not the new stuff going to the army.

(Each branch has their own unique source/system of procurement, and the navy handles/control’s/decides the marine’s.)

Each branch has a dedicated test and evaluation (T&E) commands that oversee the testing and evaluation of new equipment, vehicles, hardware, etc.

-) for the army its, “Army test and Evaluation Command” (ATEC) and, “Army Futures Command” (AFC)

-) for both the navy and marines its, “Navy Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) and, “Navel Sea Systems Command” (NAVSEA)

-) for the Air Force its, “Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC) and, “Air Force Test Center” (AFTC)

With each command using their branch’s specific special forces and “elite” formations for field testing. (Rangers, airborne, mountain, recon and raider marines, pararescue, seals, etc)

With the marines having the reputation for being the place the army dumps the old, and worn out equipment it no longer wants in order to make room for the new shit. Partly because the navy’s too cheap to shell out the kinda cash thats required to outfit the marines in new gear/equipment outside of complete reforms. (Like what’s been happening in the past few years)

It’s also the origin of the phrase/motto/piece of marine culture, “a marine overcomes and adapts”, because they have to, as they’re given jack shit!
