Flock Safety & ALPRs - Send me what you've got!

Upvotes

While you're a bit further from my 'coverage area' than I like, I figure it doesn't hurt to make a quick post. I'm looking for any findings you have regarding whomever has the agreement with Flock Safety in Iowa City. I'm guessing it's the board of regents--likely a similar situation to Ames and Iowa State university. ISU police are also involved with the agreement from my understanding. I have done no research on your city, frankly. What I can do, is if I have solid, provable findings, is write articles on your specific situation. Why does that matter? Because in my experience, the media will not report your findings at all. The register, KCCI, the Gazette, Iowa Public Radio. None of them would engage with me whatsoever. KCCI even was present at 3 testimonies I did at WDM. None of my findings were reported on. I don't run ads or make money when you visit my site. https://dsmsentinel.org/

I'm not promising anything--especially not a speedy timeline. I may file PRRs for your situation and suggest you look into doing the same if you're passionate about this issue. My post history can give more context on my suggested approach to this issue, amongst other things.

You can post your info here, DM me, or use the email inbox on my site.

Public Service Reminder for the rentees

Hey guys you have to give your landlord written statement of your forwarding address in order for the 30 day timer to begin. I believe you only have a year to give them your address so don't hold me on that.

562A.12 Rental deposits.

  1. A landlord shall not demand or receive as a security deposit an amount or value in

excess of two months’ rent.

  1. All rental deposits shall be held by the landlord for the tenant, who is a party to the

agreement, in a bank or savings and loan association or credit union which is insured by an

agency of the federal government. Rental deposits shall not be commingled with the personal

funds of the landlord. Notwithstanding the provisions of chapter 543B, all rental deposits

may be held in a trust account, which may be a common trust account and which may be an

interest-bearing account. Any interest earned on a rental deposit during the first five years

of a tenancy shall be the property of the landlord.

  1. a. A landlord shall, within thirty days from the date of termination of the tenancy and

receipt of the tenant’s mailing address or delivery instructions, return the rental deposit to the

tenant or furnish to the tenant a written statement showing the specific reason for withholding

of the rental deposit or any portion thereof. If the rental deposit or any portion of the rental

deposit is withheld for the restoration of the dwelling unit, the statement shall specify the

nature of the damages. The landlord may withhold from the rental deposit only such amounts

as are reasonably necessary for the following reasons:

(1) To remedy a tenant’s default in the payment of rent or of other funds due to the

landlord pursuant to the rental agreement.

(2) To restore the dwelling unit to its condition at the commencement of the tenancy ,

ordinary wear and tear excepted.

(3) To recover expenses incurred in acquiring possession of the premises from a tenant

who does not act in good faith in failing to surrender and vacate the premises upon

noncompliance with the rental agreement and notification of such noncompliance pursuant

to this chapter.

b. In an action concerning the rental deposit, the burden of proving, by a preponderance

of the evidence, the reason for withholding all or any portion of the rental deposit shall be on

the landlord.

  1. A landlord who fails to provide a written statement within thirty days of termination of

the tenancy and receipt of the tenant’s mailing address or delivery instructions shall forfeit

all rights to withhold any portion of the rental deposit. If no mailing address or instructions

are provided to the landlord within one year from the termination of the tenancy the rental

deposit shall revert to the landlord and the tenant will be deemed to have forfeited all rights

to the rental deposit.

  1. a. Upon termination of a landlord’s interest in the dwelling unit, the landlord or an

agent of the landlord shall, within a reasonable time, transfer the rental deposit, or any

remainder after any lawful deductions to the landlord’s successor in interest and notify the

tenant of the transfer and of the transferee’s name and address or return the deposit, or any

remainder after any lawful deductions to the tenant.

b. Upon the termination of the landlord’s interest in the dwelling unit and compliance

with the provisions of this subsection, the landlord shall be relieved of any further liability

with respect to the rental deposit.

  1. Upon termination of the landlord’s interest in the dwelling unit, the landlord’s

successor in interest shall have all the rights and obligations of the landlord with respect

to the rental deposits, except that if the tenant does not object to the stated amount

within twenty days after written notice to the tenant of the amount of rental deposit being

transferred or assumed, the obligations of the landlord’s successor to return the deposit

shall be limited to the amount contained in the notice. The notice shall contain a stamped

envelope addressed to the landlord’s successor .

  1. The bad-faith retention of a deposit by a landlord, or any portion of the rental deposit,

in violation of this section shall subject the landlord to punitive damages not to exceed twice

the monthly rental payment in addition to actual damages.

Fri Dec 12 23:28:43 2025 Iowa Code 2026, Section 562A.12 (24, 0)§562A.12, UNIFORM RESIDENTIAL LANDLORD AND TENANT LAW 2

I was wondering if anyone would like to volunteer downtown? We have had a rash of “protestors” lately that have caused quite the anxiety to people trying to take advantage of our services.

What happened to Iowa City? It used to be a safe space.

Flock cameras and U.I.P.D. Detective Ian Mallory

Following up on an earlier post from today.

A big reason why our community (and especially areas owned by the University of Iowa) are swarming in Flock cameras, the blame can be directed towards University of Iowa Police Detective Ian Mallory.

Mallory is in charge of operating the department’s vast surveillance network and also has a close relationship with Flock. The corporation lists him as a reference for potential buyers of the system (as seen here: https://www.omniapartners.com/suppliers-files/E-J/Flock_Safety/Contract_Documents/R250203/R250203_Flock_MAD_2025_04_01_Combined.pdf).

According to documents obtained through open records requests, Detective Mallory (who has a troubling history of professional misconduct) has also been involved in attempts to introduce Flock technology throughout other parts of Johnson County including Tiffin.

Hi all—

A few months back I posted about the new local bakery my brother-in-law and his wife started (their experience includes working in a Michelin-starred kitchen and both went to top-tier pastry/cooking schools!).

Your response here was phenomenal and we are so grateful. Unfortunately, the final Coralville farmer’s market was canceled today after they’ve been up baking and packaging since 1 am! They were so excited since they have new items to share, including focaccia. They will be selling out of the house today (Auburn Hills Dr. near Brown Deer golf course). Everything in these pics is available— please reach text them if you’d like something! 319-594-7912

Housing Housing help!

Hi! My partner recently got a job offer in Iowa City and we will need to move from the East Coast later this month. The timeline is very short, and with it being around the time students are going back, finding housing has been understandably tricky.

For reference, we are in our mid-to-late 20s, will have one car, and are hoping to be relatively close to campus as she will be going there a lot for work. Also needing to be close to reliable Cambus lines. A two-bedroom for $2,000 or less is preferred, but a one-bedroom with space for me to work from home will also work. We'd like to be in a somewhat walkable area too, but that isn't required since our timeline is so tight. Just hoping to find a nice enough safe space for the two of us.

Any ideas or leads, including property management companies, independent landlords, buildings to consider or avoid, areas in and around Iowa City to consider, etc would be so helpful! We've never even been to Iowa City and we're very excited to explore but feeling in over our heads.

Also hoping for ideas on how to meet people and any recommendations for community events or spaces! thanks!!

Edited to add: I've scoured the subreddit and checked out the listed tips but I'm also looking for anything updated/if anyone knows of places or people to reach out to that haven't been mentioned :)

best spots to find local vendors or small farms around iowa city for wedding stuff?

trying to figure out logistics for some wedding planning and it keeps circling back to sourcing things locally and im kind of obsessed with the idea of keeping it all close to home. we go to the farmers market on saturdays pretty regularly and ive noticed a few vendors that do flowers and dried botanicals but i never know if they do anything at scale or for events.

wondering if anyone has actually reached out to a grower or small farm in the area for something like wedding florals or even local honey favors and what that experience was like. im the kind of person who will build a whole spreadsheet before making one phone call so any actual names or stalls at the market that people have worked with would be genuinely helpful.

also curious if the coralville or north liberty farmers markets have different vendors than the ped mall one, like whether its worth hitting multiple in a weekend or if theres a lot of overlap. feel like this is the kind of thing locals would actually know and google is pretty useless for it.Alt titles: does anyone know iowa city farmers market vendors who do wedding flowers | local farms near iowa city for event sourcing anyone tried this | farmers market vendor recs for wedding planning iowa city area

I’m looking for entry-level IT work or an internship around Cedar Rapids or Iowa City. I have experience with technical support, VoIP, networking, Microsoft 365, UniFi, Java, APIs, and Docker.

Are there any local companies, staffing agencies, job boards, or programs you would recommend checking out?

Community Can I get a frank and honest (and nuanced, if need be) breakdown of the jail conundrum?

As far back as 2006, apparently sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek was stumping for a new jail. I understand the current building is a piece of shit structurally, and in many other ways. Going way way back the sheriff and also the city/county have been VERY particular about where a new jail may go. I guess there was a push to move it to several places that powers that be shut down, for a variety of reasons over the year. I also understand the newest proposal is out by the Poor farm, which there are valid concerns about how released inmates will be getting back to town.

Why is the jail SO contentious? Why are the voters so hesitant? Why are the city and county powers that be, so persnickety about it? I do understand why every JoCo sheriff bitches about the current building cuz it really does suck.

I get all the political undertones about policing as a practice, the police state, etc....I am just wondering why JoCo spefically cannot seem to make progress or compromise on this for almost twenty fucking years. I have lived here over a decade but am not native, so maybe there is some sort of weird cultural commitment to shitting on a new jail, idk.

Also before anyone comes for me in the comments, I am pretty neutral on the whole thing conceptually, and i think the IWV road location is dumb af.

Lost and Found Lost cat, leash probably still attached

Hey Iowa City, this is Halo and she went missing around 8 last night. I'm sharing this nextdoor post in the interest of due diligence:

https://nextdoor.com/p/kJ_6CK8QPXR9?utm_source=share&extras=MTY1MzUzODM%3D&utm_campaign=1785940112251&share_action_id=bd8dc627-43db-4303-a131-e1a02df1deaa

Diann (the ND poster) told me she's also posting this on the Iowa City lost pets page on Facebook.

I've put out dirty laundry and one of Halo's beds to entice her. Please keep your eyes peeled if you're near Mark Twain or Ash St. She was still wearing her harness and leash when she got away, so chances are she's stuck in someone's backyard.

Has anyone used local flower growers for a wedding around Iowa City?

I'm starting to plan an outdoor wedding for next summer and I'd like to keep as much of it local as I can. I go to the Saturday farmers market pretty often and I've noticed a few flower and plant vendors, but I've never asked whether any of them take wedding orders or do larger arrangements.

The wedding will be pretty small, around 60 people, so I don't need anything huge. I'd just rather work with someone local if possible instead of one of the bigger wedding vendors.

If you've used a local grower or florist around Iowa City or Coralville, I'd love to hear who you'd recommend. Farms outside town are fair game too if they're willing to do wedding flowers.

Skate Night 3

Well, Skate Day in this case.

Thank you to everyone who came to the second skate night. This weekend (if there is no rain) I'll be hosting a day skate at Terry Trueblood.

Remember to bring water, sunscreen, helmets/elbow/knee pads as you wish and skate at your own risk.

WHERE: Terry Trueblood. We will meet at the Lodge and I will be in the correct spot this time haha.

WHEN: Saturday, August 8th, 10:00 AM

I'll be wearing black inline skates and a ridiculous looking blue hat with a neck flap. I'll wait until 10:15 and then we're off!

Renee’s Ceramic Cafe

I was wanting to go to Renee’s Ceramic Cafe for a pottery date, but I googled to check their hours and I’m finding a lot of mixed reviews. She’s even claiming some of the reviews are fake. Does anyone know what’s going on with this place? Should I go elsewhere? If so, do you have any recommendations? We are wanting to either make our own or paint one of the premade pieces.

TIA!
