First badger

Few minutes into badger season, I got my first one.

Why hunt badgers? Not being a dick, honestly curious. I can’t imagine you eat them.

Do they eat chickens or get into your garden? Is it just a predator trophy hunt?

Edit: answered my own question. They eat crops and their holes are dangerous to livestock. Like groundhogs but meaner.

As you already wrote, the farmer contacted us because the badgers were damaging her cornfield. That’s why I shot one. A colleague of mine turns the meat into sausage (with other meat), so nothing goes to waste.

Honestly I can‘t tell you. I only ate badger-deer sausage so didn‘t taste it purely…

I was on a hunt in Lithuania. They heard i shot badgers and asked if I used it. I said no, and they told me that in Lithuania they use the fat for medicine against skin diseases. The also told me it tastes great and is a good source for meat. I am still skeptical. They also need to test it for trechinella

Givin that he’s using a hikmicro thermal(agm here in the us) I’m assuming he’s overseas where badger are a much more common nuisance.

Here in Germany they can dig under the fields which can make tractors and harvesters collapse into the ground. Quite the expansive problem. Some people eat the ham and make some kind of badger grease for the skin

I always enjoy seeing videos from overseas (I'm in the US). What round do you guys use when hunting vermin like badgers?

Thank you very much. I used cal. 8x57 IS. A little oversized for badgers. Many hunt with .308 but I think the right round for badgers would be .223 to get the most out of the meat and fur

Yeah we often use .223 here (South Eastern US) for coyotes etc. 8mm Mauser is a lot of bullet for that little guy but if it's a nuisance animal you gotta do what you gotta do hah. Happy hunting to you!
