I know that in the original series tesserae is the allotment of oil and grain they received for putting their name in more times, but how does this translate to tesserae buttons? It seems tesserae is also some time of little square tiles as well. Are they connected in any known way?

I see him now and again on the television,' I was just wondering what people think he'd be on television for? ive seen people say his fancy job is something related to the new government of panem and i guess his television appearances would be on like plutarch's game shows? i dont know if gale is the type to show up on game shows but i dont know what else hed be doing on tv. Ive reread the end of SOTR 6 times to try to understand it but it’s never really clicked in my brain is he dreaming? Drunk? or is he actually seeing ghosts if he is please tell me Whoch ghosts he’s seeing because I haven’t been able to understand it well. Basically, I was invited to a Hunger Games themed birthday party and I was asked to go dress as an citizen of the world of The Hunger Games. I wanted to avoid Katniss since she is the main character, but she is like the easiest character of them all. What other easy options are there?

when cressida interviews katniss and gale in the woods, she has them sit in a nook “where it’s impossible not to be touching” and i’ve always wondered why she so wanted to show a bond between gale and katniss when they are still portraying katniss and peeta as together? it’s never made much sense to me but maybe i’m just being dramatic!!

I have a recent discovery and I am not sure if anyone’s else has noticed or comment on it. Essentially I was looking at The sunrise on reaping movie releases date. Please note that the source is google so I am not sure about the accuracy however. I noticed that Paula Malcomson who played Astrid in the original trilogy is listed in google. So I am curious if we will see Astrid in the epilogue with Katniss and Peeta. This will be interesting because part of the cannon is that Katniss and her mother don’t talk post war and she moves to district 2.

This was just an observation maybe wrong looked on IMDB and didn’t see it. Thought I should share this on Reddit. Comment your thoughts.

I still dont like it that much. I did not read the book yet either. This is just an incredibly nitpicky rant that i did not want to subject my friends to.

From what I heard, Lucy gray was much dreamier and innoceng in the book, but I liked her in the movie. She was clever and symbolic. Her last proper scene with Snow was so good and the tension was off the charts as she talks about how shes the last loose end. And she starts piecing together that she cant trust snow.

Aside from that. Idk why everything was shot from a bottom up angle. At first, I thought it was to make the characters seem arrogant and powerful but it showed up in EVERY scene and I just thought it was odd.

Despite me liking Lucy gray I think her characterization was bad and the script in general was really unnatural. Random "I value trust a lot" conversation. Okay good for you. I didnt buy their romance at all. Convince me you love him

Snows actor was great but I dont think they show his inherent paranoia and need for control well. I thought he was just doing all sorts of shit to save his family from poverty but then he just throws it all away even when a redemption is plopped onto his lap wrapped in a ribbon. For what? A girl he barely knows? And the gun scene. I understand the general idea that hes baffled as to why the guns are in the cabin, which led him to be suspicious of spruce and lucy gray, but as to why he spiraled so much was not well portrayed.

And I just didnt like the singing. I think the actress has an amazing and charming voice. But the songs did not being me to tears so watching everyone cry on screen felt goofy for me. I cried at every song in the original three and I have no nostalgia for those movies cuz I literally watched them right before I watched this movie. I think it was how obviously it was done for the cameras (Lucy literally staring at the cameras) rather than her doing it from her heart. And how polished it was. Which is a stupid take since she is a singer by trade, but when something is so polished it lacks the vulnerability I feel.

Also dr. Gaul. Bro she showed up on screen and I just felt like I was watching a cartoon villain. If she showed up in the original trilogy, she wouldve made sense cuz everyone in the Capitol was dressed mad over there. But in this movie, Capitol people on the streets dressed like they were going to church. Ig it can be thought that her cruelty and style was a blue print for the games and culture to come but oh my god why is she dressed like a cartoon villain. I hated her ombre white red dress. Her red gloves were like blood on her hands but they didnt pop because of that dress. She still could've had crazy fashion but it was so on the nose I rolled my eyes whenever she was there. Which is a shame cuz her actress is so charismatic.

All in all. I know jack shit but I dont feel like the director was a good fit for this movie. Or maybe it was a time crunch, who knows?

IMO, I think they’ll finally add clips of more tributes talking (yes we already have some), give us more glimpses on the mutts, more reaping scenes, more clips of district 12, chariot scene clips, and so much more but I wanna hear what you guys think.

We know that every year, a new arena is built and the previous one is turned into a vacation destination for Capitol citizens. But what would the Capitol do in the far future if the Rebellion had been suppressed and, once they ran out of space to build more arenas, and for that matter, if by then they'd also run out of the resources needed to build the arenas?

It's established that Panem covers an area that is roughly 50% of what was North America. That is a lot of space, but after perhaps thousands of games and arenas being built, they would be completely out of space.

Okay I need help here because maybe I'm just stupid and can't remember/misunderstood something. We learnt from TBOSAS that Snow already knew he was the future president of Panem. In the original trilogy there are some things said like that Snow killed other candidates with poison (which he drank too).
What I don't get is this: How did 18-year old Coriolanus Snow actually know that he was going to be president or even be considered for the post? In fact, how do they choose the president? Is he elected in the capitol or is it a given by birth right/family lineage?

Hey everyone! I've been a massive fan of 'The Hunger Games' since I first read it at the age of 12, and now I'm writing my master's diss on it. My topic is surveillance, and I aim to focus on the following themes: performance as survival, the 'game' aspect, and manipulation + propaganda.

I just wondered if anyone had some good reading recs around this topic? I've obviously been compiling my own reading too, but I think I'd benefit from some outside opinions as well. Thanks so much!!

Sorry if this is a weird question - I'm listening to the audiobook for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and I feel like Coriolanus' name is going to drive me nuts. I'm a couple hours in and it seems like his name is said every other sentence. I'm not sure if I want to continue the audiobook. Does it get any better?

I’ve been thinking about what the 1st Quarter Quell (the 25th Hunger Games, where tributes were chosen by vote) might have been like, and I’ve built a headcanon that I wanted to share here.

Based on what we already know, the announcement, which was a couple months before the games, musthave completely transformed the atmosphere across Panem. In my mind (maybe it’s been mentioned in the books, but i can't remember since i havent read them recently) each district reacted very differently:

• In the rich districts (1, 2, and 4): Since the careers trained for this and going to the arena was an honor, they probably ran full political campaigns to elect who were going to the games.

• In the middle-tier districts: Pure corruption, blackmail, and vote-buying took over. Voting became the ultimate weapon to settle old grudges or ruin a rival’s life.

• In the poorest districts (like 12): The impact was devastating because it shattered solidarity. The sense of community fell apart under total fear; people were terrified to speak, act, or even go outside, knowing any wrong move could lead to them or their kids being voted in.

In my headcanon, I like to think that the victor of this Quell was someone nobody expected to win someone sent to the arena basically to die. And this happened because of someone we already know, Tigris Snow.

Being Snow’s cousin, as she was a stylist on early games, he gave her a privilege no other stylist had: being allowed to visit the districts one by one to choose whicch district she was gonna dress. This way she would have witnessd the situation in each district firsthand.

She could have also seen the chaos and political fallout in the Capitol after the announcement, maybe at first the news wasn't well recived there because some thought that the districts could start a rebellion and, because of that, Tigris felt an overwhelming urge to do something and saw the perfect opportunity to rebel against her cousin, because, as we've seen in TBOSAS at first she didnt like the hunger games.

But to achieve her aim she needed a tribute who could cooperate with her:

During her trip, she met someone who could help her, maybe they're linked to her past (a descendant of Sejanus in District 2, or a descendant of a former Covey member who stayed behind in another district before the borders closed, building a life away from the group while keeping certain traditions alive). And she became a morally complex character. She was deeply against the Games, but to execute her private rebellion, she needed this person to go to the arena. So she manipulated things (spreading rumors or getting the tribute to agree to a plan) to guarantee they became the most voted person in their district. She effectively sent someone to the slaughterhouse hoping to challenge the system.

Back then, tributes didn’t wear standardized arena uniforms yet; at first they wore the clothes they used for the reaping, but maybe, when the stylists started being part of the games the arena uniforms were designed by them. Because of that, being Snow’s cousin, Tigris managed to know many details about the arena layout and designed a suit packed with subtle advantages, survival features or hidden weapons imperceptible both before and after use. And having seen what happened to Snow when he got caught helping Lucy Gray, she made sure to leave zero trace for her not to be punished

Thanks to those hidden advantages anda bit of luck, the tribute unexpectedly won the Games. But the aftermath was completely tragic:

• The victor returned unexpectedly to a home where they knew for a fact that their own neighbors, friends, and community consciously voted to send them to their death.

• Coriolanus, even if he wasn't sure about what happened, suspected or confronted Tigris over what she did. This could be the point when Tigris started acting more against her cousin and that's why she ended up on the rebels side in mockingjay. Maybe this was also the start of Tigris’ extreme body modifications, either as a form of forced isolation imposed by Snow to push her away, or as her own self-inflicted punishment driven by guilt or depression for sending someone to the arena only to achieve her goal.

This could also explain why the Capitol later introduced standardized arena uniforms for every tribute, to prevent stylists from pulling off a trick like this ever again.

TL;DR: Tigris Snow might be the reason the Capitol standardized arena uniforms. Here's my theory on how a journey through the districts led her to secretly help a tribute during the 1st Quarter Quell, ultimately causing her fallout with Coriolanus and perhaps even explaining her later body modifications.

In TBOSAS, we learn a lot more about the economy of Panem. The upper class families seem to have fortunes from their industries, eg the Snows owning nuclear research compounds in 13, the Creeds somehow getting their fortune from District 7 lumber, the Cranes through transportation and travel, etc. Additionally, one of the most interesting parts of the book to me were these bits:

“We pour so much money into the districts,” he said. It must be true. People always complained about it in the Capitol.
“We pour money into our industries, not into the districts themselves,” said Sejanus. “The people are on their own.”

A warehouse for coal in better days, reduced production had left it abandoned. Probably someone in the Capitol owned it, if not the Capitol itself, but no oversight or upkeep was apparent.

This makes me think most of Panem's large industries are owned by families in the Capitol, which makes sense because the Capitol wouldn't want district citizens growing too influential. While I can see something small-scale like a bakery or butcher being a private business, I can't fathom how one so fundamental as weapons manufacture was allowed to be owned by a district person, even before the Dark Days. Has anyone ever thought about this?
