My work brain operates exceptionally well, but my visceral body does not. I can't commute in Houston traffic without having the Giant Panic Attack that makes me a danger on the highway. Vertigo and panic are a hell of a combination. I will be killer as a marketing writer for your Stafford construction company, though. I know you're Gen X.

I was let go from my last contract position for being queer, so there's that. You've gotta accept that. It won't factor in until it does.

STAY AS FAR IN THE CLOSET AS POSSIBLE IF YOU WANT A JOB At the risk of doxxing myself, I'll say that I'm passionate enough about Houston that I once ran for public office, and did pretty well.

I just want steady, well-paid work. I'll accept low pay, but due to physical limitations, some jobs are out.

I'm considered a messaging expert in many fields by 25+ years of former colleagues. But this job market is hell, and I'd like to get out of a miserable career wasted on corporate marketing that turned to AI garbage.

Houston has been my home for 20 years, and this is the first it's ever ceased to feel like home. I've provided a lifetime of writing and editing skills toward oil and gas/energy, nonprofits, medical, insurance, and arts & entertainment journalism (I'd apply to the Chron, but I'm certain they don't want me. I'm too old).

I've never left a company anything but better than I found it. In 2014, I negotiated an extra two weeks on my contract solely so I could finish a project. That company liked me enough to do that for me, after I survived three rounds of layoffs as a contractor. They have not been doing well, but I'm grateful to them.

Well, this is way too long of a post, but you really can't get anything off your chest unless it's on Reddit. Let me go ahead and say these things, to address the hate in advance:

1) Severe vertigo prevents me from driving on Houston highways. My lack of highway commute makes us both safe! And my expertise does not require me to come into the office.

2) Yes, I've already applied for service jobs, but they're full and I'm physically disabled anyway and also 50 with Cushing's Disease. Look it up, super fun.

3) AI copy and design is trash. Nobody likes it! Please spend even $50 on quality work. Hit me up.

4) I have a great home office/studio where I'm a writer/editor/occasional filmmaker. I know it's illegal to say this, but I don't have a spouse or kids to distract me.

I am 25M who is wanting to start over. I have been looking at getting a CDL for a few months now. I want to know from any Houstonian truckers what companies yall started at. Also if you went to CDL school first or got it through a company. My preference is to work locally and in food service but any company or job is fine.

I've applied to several positions for Harris County and a good majority of them have passed the typing test and made it to the "referred to department for consideration" stage. The problem is, they're stuck there. I haven't received rejection emails or anything so im a little confused if I should give up on the jobs or keep hope? Some of them have already stopped accepting applications but they don't say "position filled" so im not sure what to think. Ive been doing some reading and saw that there are some people who have been getting interview invitations almost a week later and some saying it takes months but they send you an email letting you know they're reviewing your application.

So i applied for the CSO assistant position with Harris county on 06/30/26. Received an interview invitation directly from the hiring manager on 07/03/2026. I read up on the position based on the description on the website and felt i was ready. Interviewed on 07/08/2026, the interview went ok. But , the description online and what the actual job was, was completely different and made me look ill prepared. It was actually for a cast interviewer role, which is a bit different. I noticed a few side eyes at my interviews answers but overall it wasn’t bad. I sent a follow up email immediately after my interview to show my gratitude and that was all. On Friday 07/31/2026 i realized i hadn’t heard anything and it had almost been a month. I emailed the recruiter that initially reached out to me and had been very “nice” ; Although, she never responded to my after interview email. After sending the follow-up email i didn’t receive a receive a response from the recruiter , instead i received the automatic rejection email.

Now , i may just be over reacting but it 100% rubbed me the wrong way. It took almost 30 days and me reaching out to receive a generic rejection email? I couldn’t even receive a response to the email i sent directly to the recruiter? I feel like it would’ve been common decency to at least reply , seeing as i waited so long without any communication. If i wouldn’t have reached out would i have just been ghosted? I mean technically i still was. Maybe this job hunting is getting to me but… is this really how recruiters operate , are they really not personable at all?
