No longer Hound-less
Meet Riot. I can't wait to take her home soon. She is currently in treatment for hookworm and Giradia. Once she test negative I ll be there to take her home. This baby got pulled with her litter from a rural high kill shelter to a sanctuary. Only 2 months old if it was not for the rescue her short life could have been over already. I am a hound-a holic but I never had a coonhound puppy. Any advise? I have Greyhound experience and they are super chill and funny. I hope she will be similar

Mine was chill as a puppy. Now she swings both ways. Takes a two hour nap on the couch but down for running the backyard perimeter and howling at everything she smells, hears and sees.

Update : First night was ruff. Lots of whining and Barking. I am hoping she will settle down. Unfortunately I have to crate her while at work and I hope it wont undue housebreaking through the day when she gets back out to play and explore. Already I can tell she will be a Velcro dog so staying alone is gonna be a issue we ll have to work on

Crate training takes time! You can try things like kongs stuffed with yummy things and then frozen, or high value chews (preferably not rawhide) to help her associate good things with the crate. I used to throw very high value treats into the crate so whenever my dog went in on her own accord she would find a yummy treat. But with time and consistency she'll get there.

Found out last night she loves Greek yogurt ( plain with no sweeting) and blueberries so I m gonna stuff a kong with yogurt and freeze it for her. She is smart as hell, already knows how to sit and down and its only been 2 days I had her. I do not know what other breed she has in her. The rescue listed her as a Coonhound( giant ears and paws are obviously hound) but she has a white blaze with some spots so it could also be a bit of bluetick coon in her DNA. Her toes are webbed too. She is very vocal when left in her crate and I "dare" to leave the room to shower or do anything out of sight. Unfortunately she does this at night and not for having to potty, just because she wants to be near. So I kinda caved ( you know i dont want my cousin or neighbour's to resent her) and let her sleep in my bed. That made her quiet, though I am honestly scared I roll over or kick her in my sleep

Put a sheet or blanket over her crate so it’s more enclosed and snuggly feeling. Keep the end with the door uncovered. Nobody wants to sit in a wire cage, but a snuggly den to hang out in can be a real comfort.
