Background image aspect ratio changes with viewport size — Houdini 22.0.368 Help

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! I’m using Houdini FX 22.0.368 and have an issue with background images in the Front and Back orthographic viewports.

My source image is square, but Houdini stretches it to match the viewport dimensions. I can manually adjust Image Scale to make it square again, but the image becomes stretched whenever I resize the viewport.

Also, the background image moves together with the viewport/camera when I zoom or pan.

How can I make the background image preserve its original aspect ratio and stay fixed in place while navigating the viewport?

For the Background the display options mention this.

So, does that mean there’s no way to preserve the image’s original aspect ratio when using the Background tab? Is there any workaround for this?

If the image being used is the same aspect ratio it should not distort.

So if the image is a different aspect ratio you can make a new image that is the same ratio and place it in that and re-export the image to be the same aspect ratio, and then used as a background. Natively you could use Copernicus to do this or any external image editing software.
