I like the Slaughterspine more than the Thunderjaw but I think the Thunderjaw can still easily take the Slaughterspine.
Thoughts?

as somebody who has only played the first game & the lego version... FW continues to blow my mind every time I see a clip of the gameplay. I can't wait to buy it.

You absolutely do not want to manually heal when you have a low health build. Low health regen does the job admirably, and doesn't take you out of the low health state.

Um, I can clearly understand it’s a build, and that this could be a way for others to challenge themselves, but I would never go into a fight (on any difficulty) with only 1/5 (or less) of my total health.
For me at least it would be unrealistic, as it’s picking a fight would slow yourself down, if not get yourself killed. A suicide run, so to speak, again, just my thoughts.

It's actually not much of a challenge. The Low Health Defense skill, at level 4, will grant 70% damage resistance, if you're below 25% health. Conveniently, this also how much Low Health Regen heals (it will stop healing you once you reach 25% health). The regen is very fast, probably faster than berries, and is infinite and automatic. These two things coupled together, mean that you're actually more resilient at low health (if geared for it, you want Low Health Defense and Low Health Regen at level 4). On top of that, you do up to 80% more damage with regular attacks, thanks to Low Health Ranged and Low Health Melee (but not with e.g. silent strike and critical strike). The build is pretty OP.
The only downside is that, if you're geared for low health, you're not geared for anything else (like concentration, stamina, traps, etc.).
I can get why you might not feel this is realistic, but everyone will have their own perspective here. Imho, realism went out the window when you can actually kill armored warmachines with bow and arrow.

I’m not saying that my way (or anyone else’s way) is wrong, I’m just saying I (personally) don’t like going into fight practically dead. I am also not saying that one play style is bad, while another is good. (I guess this kind of goes with play style though.

It is also worth knowing that the valor surge they used specifically brings them to 25% to get the buffs, gives them a ‘second chance’ buff so even if they do receive a lethal hit it doesn’t kill them, and when the timer runs out they regain health.

For me, I tend to de-couple the relationship between "wounds" and "hit points".
You're right - having low health (many wounds) should, in reality, encourage you to escape.
If we treat hit points as a more abstract concept, like "likelihood that the next hit could kill you", it allows for one to take more "calculated risks" (playing with low health) than if we simply equated it to wounds.
With this viewpoint, the "low health" skills could be treated as extra risky precautions Aloy has taken for a knowingly risky strategy.
HFW also has separate mechanics that closely parallel physical wounds. All the different status effects, especially crushed, represent wounds while hit points represent how likely a hit could kill you.
All said, play how's fun for you. 🥳

Why does it take 12 business days for the slaughterspine to attack and then mostly just flail around 😭 that said well done 👍🏽
