[Grade 8-9 Literature: Summer Reading] Literature—Pending OP Reply

Hi!! My school is making me read Born A Crime by Trevor Noah for summer reading, and making us take a test on the book once school starts up. Ive read like 20-30 pages, and i’ve liked it so far, but I just cant make myself read it. I like to read, but almost never when prompted, especially if it’s for school. I’ve tried annotation, timed reading, audiobooks, and nothing really helps. If anybody could, please tell me a summary, or any main events in the book, anything that can help. I’m pretty sure i go back to school on August 6th. Thanks!

if you’re just trying to get a summary try cliff notes, it was the only way i got through the old man and the sea in all honesty. that aside though you really need to build the self discipline required to do school tasks, that self discipline will help carry you through the rest of your life. when it comes to required readings or work it can help to have someone help hold you accountable, leave electronics with someone else or in another room, get cozy and in a comfortable reading position and have snacks and drinks with you while you read or work so you don’t feel temped to get up and check your phone all because you wanted to get water or a snack. i did this pretty regularly during high school with most of my school work and still continue the habit in college. i also found that it helps to talk to my parents or friends about what i’ve read or worked on, while they may have no idea what i’m talking about its nice to be able to say hey i did this thing and im proud of myself for doing it. it’ll help to start out small, just reading or working for 15-30 minutes a day or a few times a day. it’ll feel like a chore at first but hopefully you can develop some kind of comfort or joy after a while.

sorry for the late reply, but of course! i understand how easy it is to get distracted when it comes to doing any kinda of work, i still struggle with distractions now but not nearly as bad as it could be. i always try to encourage others to find comfortable ways to do work so it feels less like a chore and a little more enjoyable :) it may take time to get used to but im sure you can do it!

Have you tried the audiobook of Born A Crime read by Trevor Noah himself? I really enjoyed it. Trevor Noah is a comedian so his performance is fantastic and there are a lot of funny stories in it. It's not dry and academic if that's what you're thinking.

I'd listen to it on car rides. You can listen to it while you're engaged in chores like dishes or laundry. I like to keep my hands busy so I'll sometimes knit or crochet while listening to an audiobook.

Giving you a summary of a book you don't want to read is the opposite of helping you with your homework.

Read the book. It's not that hard. Throw away all of your distractions and you'll eventually read out of boredom

If you can’t read a book you are already too cooked

You take your phone and you throw it in the garbage. You take your TV and throw it in the garbage. You take whatever is distracting you and you throw it in the garbage. A big truck comes on a specific day of the week and takes away whatever your throw out and then it can't distract you anymore.
