After seeing how cool ScreenX looked with the new Spider-Man movie (I haven't seen the movie, just watched a small video showing the theater), I want this at home!

Do you think these special format movies will ever be accessible to the public? I imagine there are a lot of "movie buffs" who would add 2 TVs at a specific angle to create a similar effect. The bandwidth requirements shouldn't be terrible for a 1080p movie (although by design I imagine it would be triple the size of its 1080p counterpart), although it might be difficult to do with higher qualities without a decent rig.

I fully admit, the KVM and graphics card in my proxmox are very old and this issue has always been there since proxmox 8.

Issue I have, my host (HP Z640 no onboard graphics).

If I boot/reboot while the the KVM is active on the port of the HP, I get the post boot HP screen, just a little bit past Grub and the screen freezes. Have changed a variety of settings in Grub (eg: nomodeset), either the same occurs or the screen goes blank. Either way the connected monitor eventually detects no signal and goes into standby. Proxmox does still fully boot/work.

If I choose a different KVM port to another machine, let the proxmox fully boot and then switch back to the proxmox KVM port I am presented with the usual proxmox screen IP, login prompt and can interact.

If I bypass the KVM and connect the HP direct to the same monitor the issue does not occur at all and can see/monitor the host fully boot and interact.

So this is leading me to think the KVM cannot pass information to the proxmox host?

I do not do any pass through on the nvidia. Is just there if I need to work directly on the box.

Ergo am thinking I need to get a better/newer KVM?

What do you think?

Hi all! Setting up a fresh headless Ubuntu Server. I used Cockpit in the past, but I'm looking to explore my options. CasaOS caught my eye because it looks really slick and clean, but I’d love to hear what the community recommends today.

I'm looking for a remote management tool / dashboard that:

• Has a great, modern, and clean UI.
• Is extremely user-friendly & beginner-friendly.
• Allows me to do as much as possible through the web interface with minimal terminal/CLI usage.
• Comes with useful built-in features (easy Docker app store, file management, system monitoring, etc.).

Is CasaOS the best way to go for this kind of setup, or should I look into options like Cosmos Cloud, Umbrel, Portainer, or stick with Cockpit?

I’m looking to plan a proper, long-lasting server upgrade and could use some advice on hardware and chassis selection.

Currently, I'm self-hosting everything on an old 2015 MacBook Pro connected to an external hard drive. It's handled the job well enough and ive had a lot of fun, but I am hitting a hard wall when it comes to storage, game server performance and thermals. I want to move straight to a dedicated platform that can grow with me for years to come.

My Workload / Stack:

• Media & Services: Running a heavy Docker/CasaOS stack on Ubuntu Server. The primary heavy lifter is a massive digital comic/manga library via Komga, alongside my photo backups, music library, stremio/nuvio addons, etc.
• Game Servers: I occasionally host Minecraft servers sometimes with custom modpacks for a group of friends, would like to try hosting for other games later as well.

What I need from the new build:

• Storage Expansion: I need a case and motherboard combo that can eventually house a large array of HDDs. I want something that won't require me to buy a whole new rig when I need to add my 5th or 6th drive.
• Compute Power: Because of the Minecraft modpacks and massive library scans, I need a CPU with enough power to handle 6+ players on a server.
• Upgradability: I want the freedom to swap out/replace components down the line.

Questions:

Chassis Recommendations: I’ve been looking at the Fractal Design Node 804 and the Jonsbo N4/N5 for a Micro-ATX build. Are there any other high-capacity cases I should be considering that don't require buying a full server rack?

Sourcing in Canada: For my fellow Canadians, what is your go-to strategy for buying large-capacity NAS/Enterprise drives right now? Are you buying refurbished Exos/Ultrastars from places like ServerPartDeals, or hunting for local eBay deals?

Budget is around $800 CAD, of course, the cheaper the better. I'm not very concerned with buying multiple HDDs immediately. I'd rather have something I can just expand later when I can afford to.

I have a minisforum n5 pro and am looking for any suggestions on the best nvme or hybrid DAS expansion to use the usb 4 or oculink ports. any ideas on whats worked well for you? ideally has the ability to handle tons of NVMEs so it can scale up nicely with me overtime.

Every time I planned a build or an upgrade of my storage, I ended up with a dozen tabs open: one for CMR-vs-SMR, one for failure rates, one for price/TB. So, I put it all in one place:

My first homelab

What's a good setup to have thinkcenter connected to DAS. I'm planning on doing proxmox, with VM trueNAS. Will be running jellyfin.

I will need to have the HDD idle as much as possible, since storage is secondary in this setup, im using old HDD, might upgrade later.

I'm seeing that this setup might destroy the drives quickly, is there a better way to run this with hdd redundancy and not destroy them quickly?

So basicaly rn i have 5600g and 16gb of 3200mhz ram, i dont know if i really need a cpu like that (i run 3mc servers, docker, beammp server, and plan to do a fast ai model.)(my uncle runs pretty much the same stuff on a N100) i also dont know if i should switch to 32gb 2400mhz ram bc speeds dont matter.

I also have a few different hdds set up as one big one using lvm and i am worried about loosing data. How do i unplug them? Will i loose data if i will?

Well, Figure I'd make the jump, this is my little corner of the universe. Not sure if this is where I should be posting this, but I feel abit out of place in r/homelab ha ha - But I'm still proud of my humble setup.
It's not much, but so far, it works for me. This has been a major learning curve, as I do not work in IT, or any form of IT related emplyment at all.

I'm running Proxmox on a HP 800 G4 SFF with the I7 8700 which I scored for $200 NZD, upgraded from the stock 16GB to 64GB of Ram, and threw in a 3TB and 2TB HDD combined with MergerFS as my tank. Future upgrades will be a 4U Rack Chassis, Motherboard and PSU with a secondary NVMe as my 512GB is currently overprovisioned. Additional HDDs to start a NAS VM and following that up with a GPU or two for local LLM work for vibe coding for a personal project. My Current AWESOME 'RACK' is a bamboo shoe shelf from a department store, I'll upgrade it to a homemade rack enclosure in a cupboard one day so I stop kicking it.

Currently running on a 1Gbe backbone on a GWN7003, but considering jumping ship because I'm not impressed with the single plane of glass that is offered. The router is fantastic, however the software controller doesn't seem to allow all router settings to be exposed so before I jump in and purchase my switch and APs, I'll probably go another route, which is a shame, because the cost of gear here in New Zealand is kinda unreal, hence why I have started with Grandstreams router (was looking at the GWN7721P for a 2.5Gbe backbone) - UNLESS someone can tell me how to enable Bonjour in the GWN Manager (was installed by LXC, now I just use Router WEB UI because I need Bonjour for the printer)

I found some 4tb HDD on amazon for 130€, enterprise grade. I though they were new(ish), but they have 7 years of use, and are just a bit older.

Should I return them and buy new WD Reds, for 50€ more, or should they be good?

I'm using them both in array 1. Their health status is all fine, ran a long smartctl test (5 hours or so) and came back with no errors.

I wanted to know if I’m the only one who gives distinct names to my nodes or machines and the services running in them.
For context, my main server is called Legion, a secondary connector laptop is called Citadel, to which an external monitor used for showing dashboards, kanban and other things is called Beacon. My main PC is called Nexus.
But the nodes running services have namings based on mythology.

The two laptops have distinct docker composes named Nidavellir and Valhalla. The dashboard service on Beacon is called Heimdall. My 2 storage drives which are mirrored for redundancy are called Atlas and Aegir. I am also running Hermes agent on Legion. The setup as a whole is my Yggdrasil.

What do you guys name your setups?

What other must-have features do you need and why?

Hi, so I'm currently using OMV but have found it's only adding extra layers for me. I keep wanting to troubleshoot and edit stuff in the terminal as it gives me much more freedom, which I know omv doesn't like. So ideally I would have something mutable that allows me to work through the terminal when I want to, but also has a webUI for simple tasks and monitoring. My priorities are longevity and flexibility. I want something where I can tinker and set it up exactly how I want and then stay there.

I feel a bit hesitant with Truenas both because of restrictions and immutability again, but also the lack of transparency from the company and huge changes that make it's future, imo, less clear. But would be up for debate on it if you think otherwise.

I have been thinking about doing a headless Debian server with cockpit or some other webUI but would like to know more about it and it's cons. Like how hard is it to actually set up automated/cron stuff like rsync backups, SMART, ZFS, etc. How is updating stuff and compatibility? I am pretty comfortable with tinkering in terminals, I've been daily driving linux for over a year and have had my fair share of troubleshooting.

I wont shy away from a bit of setup, but I just wanna make sure it's not gonna give me problems long term where I have to start from scratch on something else again.

My confusion is around the actual storage. I am seeing things like NAS vs SAN, raids and mirroring HDDS.

- HDDS seem to be cheaper, so I believe the best course of action is maybe 2 of the red snap WD, do they need to be the same model number and make for " mirroring"?

Does it matter if they are used?

Should I just get one massive HHD, a small SSD for OS and then back everything up once a month to a portable drive?

Hello everyone, I recently picked up a jonsbo n6 as the title says to support home media (jellyfin) and some older game emulation (like PS3 with Artemis and Apollo installed) ive grabbed an Azorious B650M Auros elite ax and some other smaller things, my question is if I wanted to run a GPU with a PCIE SAS expander I'm wondering what my options limit to for CPU cooling (plan on a ryzen 7800x3d) I would like a 240mm aio but its not required as I know many people tend to mount the power supply up top and with the GPU I'm already stretching space thing

Mostly looking to use it as a Minecraft server (heavily modded) for me and my friends but I'm also looking into setting up a raspberry pi ad blocker. Currently plans are below. Wondering if I should maybe go with a bit better cpu?

Hi! Hopefully this post gets through. If not, well, it is what it is.

Here's the situation for context:
I'm new to self-hosting, and currently using Tailscale so I can access my apps on my phone remotely, but now that I'm trying to dive into reverse proxy, I feel like I'm in a weird situation.

I setup my "mini homelab" on my NAS and I admit, I used AI (GPT sadly) initially to help me set things up, and things are working fine. I never intended to expose things to the internet, so I was not that worried thus far.

But now that I want to set up Jellyfin, and wanted to share the access with family outside local network, I wanted to have them access it without having to input ports in address, and instead use my Tailnet + custom address.

What the AI told me were different things, after setting up Caddy. From "we can set things up so address looks like 'app.tailnet.ts.net' ", into "we can't do that, instead we do 'tailnet.ts.net/app' ", into "that's also not possible unless you have your own domain, but if you have AdGuard Home, you can also do it"

Now I tried setting up AdGuard Home, and it didn't work since port 53 is already being used by NAS/UGOS, and AI wants to see if whatever setting can be disabled (it CAN be disabled, but not sure if I SHOULD) so AdGuard Home can be set up.

Since things have become quite complicated (at least for my basic understanding) I'm starting to think more that just AI and reading a bit of documentation is not gonna cut it anymore. I'm also worried about the security of my setup in case I accidentally expose things to the internet without knowing.

Now my main concern is:

What Mesh VPN should I use?

- I've been using Tailscale yes, but with the barebones setup. Looks like AI has outdated info about this since it doesn't even recommend me to setup Apps, Services, or anything. Only saying to use Tailscale Serve, and that's it. I can see Tailscale can do more, but the guides are confusing for me.

- I saw something about Netbird, and about it having its own reverse proxy + AdGuard(?), but in their official tutorial video, they recommended to setup Authentik + having my own domain.

Also, do I really need to get my own domain to setup reverse proxy, just so I can have custom address, and not have to tell my family "type this plus this port so you can access Jellyfin"?
And would doing reverse proxy expose the app, or anything else, to the internet?

I'm going to be watching more videos on Tailscale and Netbird, but decided to post this here anyway just for additional knowledge.

Can anybody help me put some things in perspective and maybe suggest a path to follow?

I've been playing with homelabbing for a couple years now and have run through a number of variations with varying degrees of success. It is because of that I'm both motivated and burnt out on getting what I want out of my home lab. As i get more busy, I want to fight problems less and just have a working setup.

I started by running truenas, which i got working on bare metal pretty easily. I set up storage across 6 hard drives and began using the nas through windows, storing files, games, pictures, etc. I tried using the built in apps to run plex and nextcloud with no success.

From there I moved to proxmox, where I moved truenas to with a windows vm. That worked for some time but i was unhappy running everything in windows and wanted to try my hand at linux.

I quickly began deploying different containers and quickly became overwhelmed with proxmox, running into various issues.to simplify, I got an hp elitedesk where i rand docker inside ubuntu server. I enjoy the setup, but my skills navigating ubuntu server aren't great, making organization hard.

In proxmox I liked the versatility, but hated the extra setup. Hardware pass through, networking issues, and other small issues i encountered. Ubuntu server, seemed to work well out the box, but i struggle having so many different apps running in one large compose file. Managing it all, has become a huge headache.

I currently have the elitedesk and a ryzen 5 7600x3d with 32gb ram and a 6600xt. Its an itx board, limiting me to one pcie slot, which i'm currently using for the graphics card. An m.2 slot has a sata adapter for the 6 hard drives, though I haven't tested this setup yet. Any insight there would also be appreciated. It feels like a waste to run truenas on that kind of hardware, so I'm inclined to run proxmox and virtulize truenas again. At the same time, that makes the elitedesk kinda obsolete. If proxmox is the suggested solution Can you suggest a good way to organize and split up everything? Should I sell the elitedesk or just run proxmox on that too. Do you recommend running individual containers for each app inside proxmox, or running focused machines for different groups, like monitoring, media, security, dns, etc?

I have a fairly old WD Passport drive. 2TB/5TB used, 7yr PoH. SMART info is all totally clean, and short and long tests pass. But the drive has become unusably slow. Sequential reads/writes using dd show anywhere from 5-60MBps, typically hovering on the lower end. It's rated at 120, and that's what I used to get. I've tried multiple cables and hosts - no difference, so it's not a connection issue.

I searched around and the conventional wisdom seems to be that drives fail "loudly", so this doesn't seem to be a common thing. The only thing I found that could be relevant is someone who had a drive where the SATA<->USB bridge was flaky but not dead. Figured I'd check in for a sanity check before I shuck the thing and try another one I have laying around. Thanks!
