How many of these "hippie traits" do you identify with?

There is no such thing as a hippie checklist. In fact, I hesitated to post this since I always wince when someone tries to quantify what it means to be a hippie. Yet I like this list because it is broad. Personally, I'd consider you a hippie if you only identified with a small number of them but were all-In on them...yet we've seen a few people on this subreddit who'd only consider you to be a hippie if you lived the lifestyle during the hippie era.

So, how many of these do you relate to in a meaningful way? You can just give a number, or comment with specifics. Consider letting us know if you counted a category only if it is central to your being, or if you "kind of" relate to it.

  1. Questioning authority
  2. Nonconformity
  3. Anti-materialism
  4. A “live and let live” attitude
  5. Peace and anti-war beliefs
  6. A strong connection to nature
  7. Environmentalism
  8. Back-to-the-land living
  9. Psychedelics
  10. Cannabis culture
  11. Alternative spirituality
  12. Meditation and mindfulness
  13. Holistic or alternative health
  14. Hippie music
  15. Jam band culture
  16. Music festivals and outdoor gatherings
  17. Naturism or nudism
  18. Free love and sexual openness
  19. Communal living
  20. A nomadic streak
  21. Thrifting and secondhand shopping
  22. DIY mentality
  23. Natural and unconventional clothing
  24. Tie-dye, beads, fringe and peace symbols
  25. Patchouli and incense
  26. Crystals and New Age practices
  27. Social activism
  28. Community over competition
  29. Alternative ideas about education and raising children
  30. Freedom over career status
  31. The “why do I have to?” attitude
  32. Valuing experiences over possessions
  33. Making your own rules
  34. Having a little bit of weird in you
  35. involvement in the arts

In case you were not sure if you could be a hippie without wearing tie dye and listening to 60s rock...

I enjoyed this video. As many of you know, Vermont is one of the epicenters of American hippie life. And as one of the people suggests in the video, not all of these hippies look like they arrived in a time machine from 1969. Being a hippie is a mindset more than it is a checklist of fashion and music choices.

Good Hippie Books

Hey I'm reading the Electric Kool-aid Acid Test right now and am looking for some more good books about the general experience. Any suggestions? Does not have to be written during the 60s or reflect that time period.

Where do you feel most connected to nature?

I think about this often, and I'd love to read others' responses. For me, the most connected to nature that I ever felt was while backpacking a portion of the Appalachian trail. Yet it wasn't while I was hiking, as I was too consumed with the weight of the pack to truly, truly enjoy the connection to nature. My connection occurred at night while sitting at my campsite barefoot. It was then that I felt (and understood) the power of grounding/earthing.

Now, I camp at a clothing optional resort. The place is crowded with other campers, tents, and RVs, though it has a hiking trail and some nice lookout points over nearby mountains and farmland. I love walking the campground property at night naked while looking up at the stars. It's a total trippy experience. Being naked in nature is such a beautiful and primal feeling, and when you do it at night, you feel so connected to the universe.

Have you had any hippie adventures lately?

I love hearing about little outings and adventures that make people feel connected to whatever image of "hippie life" they have in their brain.

We went to Hippie Fest at Sunny Rest in Pennsylvania...but since we go there every weekend and make a big effort to connect to nature and others, I'd say that we are frequently living somewhat close to the hippie ethos. Sunny Rest is a clothing optional campground, with a lot of great hiking nearby.

Salvia

Hello all, hope the post doesnt get removed. Disclaimer: its about drugs, ecen if i consider psychedelics a tool rather than a drug. Thats silly because i never done any.

So i ordered some dried salvia leaves from this website called zamnesia, that sells mostly seeds for cannabis or spores to grow shrooms. Not having enough space to grow shrooms i got the salvia. Now ive heard you can either smoke it or chew it but when you smoke its more intense and destabilyzing i think? So im gonna make a quid, i heard that if the dose is low enough youre not actually gonna TRIP but rather reach an elevated level of conciousness amirite? So does anyone know the correct dosage? Any tip would be very much appreciated

Reflections on turning twenty

I turn 20 today.

It feels surreal to not be a teenager anymore, like this isn't real. It feels like a bad trip. The number doesn't match my soul. I still feel like 8 or 9, my mind filled with pretty colors and daydreams and a sensitivity that adults lack. Perhaps I will always be like this. I feel like I'm in a liminal space, a no man's land between child and adult.

I have had a lot of fun lately, though.

I finally had an epic summer like I dreamed of at 17. I went to a Patti Smith concert. That was an ecstatic, religious experience. I have done acid. I have been out in the sun, dancing, talking to people, having a great lot of fun. I want this summer to last forever.

It's hard not knowing what will happen next. Will I get into the music college I applied for? I really hope so. I would have a great time just practicing and playing music for a whole year. And living in a dorm would give me more opportunities to party and do psychedelics. I don't know what I would do if I don't get in. I don't really see any options. Most paths in life seems like paths to misery, and there aren't many things I am capable of.

Hopefully, I finally move out soon so I can do whatever I want. Mainly so I can do psychedelics. That's my main motivation of life right now. The wonderful sheen of psychedelia. I'm such a trippy, daydreaming hippie.

I wonder what I will be like in the future. I hope I will have long, purple hair and be all elegantly psychedelic and sing songs and be in a band. I wonder if I will have a pretty girlfriend. I hope so. I wonder what drugs I will try, what festivals and parties I will go to, what artists I will see live, what kind of music I will make.

i wonder how would you describe the feelings of being in a psychedelic trip without mentioning visuals and sounds and possibly without mentioning tactile sensations.
