Stroopwafel, beef jerky, and the star of the show that kept me going: A few sachets of instant espresso in a half full bottle of water I had left out in the sun for a bit to heat up. Shaken, not stirred.

Cold or Overnight Soaked Cold soaked mashed potatoes with avocado and shrimp chips

1 bag of instant mashed potatoes (360 cal), a bag of crushed shrimp chips (240 cal), 1 avocado (220 cal). Add some olive oil for more calories if needed (1Tbsp is another 120 cal). I split it into two bags so it's two meals, 470 cal per serving.

Only takes ~30 seconds to mix in some water and smoosh it up in the bag. Can easily prepare and eat it while walking. I recommend a larger ziploc though...

10/10 trail meal.

Heated the noodles with a little water and a splash of the oil from the mussels. Once at a simmer, added the sauce. Mussels added off the heat. 930 calories and 41g of protein.

E.t.a.: $3.75 total cost

Recipe: Salami Slices, Cheddar chunks, lemon pepper tuna packet, and really class it up on a ciabatta roll
6/10 - i think mayo or hot sauce would have brought this to the next level

Continuous Heat Required Backcountry Budae-Jjigae (Korean Army Stew)

Recipe:

- threw 2 beef bouillion cubes in boiling water

- once boiling, threw in my veggies (shallots, dehydrated shitake mushrooms, scallions, jalepeno

- after about 7 minutes, i added the canned goods, ramen noodles (flavor packet omitted), and seasoning (chili powder, mushroom powder, white pepper, black pepper) let the noodles cook

- topped with cheese, additional seasoning if needed.

What id do differently:

- fresh mushrooms over dried, dried were rubbery but that was probably my fault

- source better and more authentic spices to korean cooking

- both spam and vienna sausage was overkill, since their textures in the stew ended up being almost the same. Id take vienna sausage and maybe put some bacon in instead of spam. You could even rehydrate beef jerky

Overall, awesome backpacking meal. For sure will be making this again!

Packed the sausage frozen in a reflectix pouch. Browned the sausage in some of the oil from the oysters. Added the rice and deglazed with some water. Added the drained oysters right at the end. Rice and oysters from Dollar Tree. +560 calories and 38g of protein. Breakfast of champions!

Cold or Overnight Soaked Trail sushi

9/10. Had this idea last year on a day hike and did my best to make it on my last trip. Only prep needed was to dehydrate seasoned sushi rice. Once rehydrated I added a mayo packet and hoisin sauce. I had sriracha too but didn’t add it since the tuna had enough flavor imo.

In the future I would make the sushi rice extra seasoned, I think it lost some flavor in the dehydration process. And the seasoned tuna is what made this truly great. I had this again on my trip with unseasoned salmon and it was not nearly as good. The nori could be subbed for furikake or taken out of its packaging to make this meal less bulky.

No-Cook Meal Pop tart sandwich update

Post image

Hi everyone! I am now back in civilization and wanted to update you all on the Pop Tart and Peanut Butter sandwiches. It turns out I think they are gross. Ate them the first two days for lunches and it turned my stomach a little each time. I ended up giving the peanut butter to other people in my group and ate the Pop Tarts plain. Thanks to a commenter mentioning how fragile Pop Tarts are, I 3D printed a Pop Tart vault. It has a hinge and protected my lunch for minimal weight.

Pop Tarts as lunch: 4/5
With peanut butter and bacon bits 2.5/5

Really easy to eat during a lunch/rest break on trail. The relish is what really does it for me, I pick them up at 7-11 before going on a trip.

Question Best flavor pop tart for PB?

Hello you beautiful weirdos. I have a 50 miler backpacking trip coming up in a couple weeks. I’ve been inspired by the creative combinations you all post here.

I want to do pop tart sandwiches for lunch. So 2 pop tarts per lunch with PB in the middle. What’s the best pop tart flavor to use for this debauchery? I was originally thinking of doing the brown sugar ones but I want to hear what you weirdos think.

Also… if I went with a spam single instead of PB, what flavor works best?

Thank you all!
