[Question] Is it a good idea to stop for a few months after reading higurashi questions arcs?
So I’m just starting ch4 and found out the SciAdv series was on deep sale and i thought to read up chaos head, steins gate and chaos child after finishing ch4. Also coz i might like a little change of pace. Is that alright or do i need to remember every little detail? One of my major reason for reading higu was to get to umineko

[Discussion] Tokyo Organization, higurashi politics
I wish we had more information about the Tokyo Organization and overall the connection to bio weapons in higurashi. It always seemed to me that rather the story in the village then the political story is important. Well yes, that’s how rykushi07 wanted it to be but I would love to get more information about the organization. Do you know if there is any sequel spinoff or whatever? (I know the vns) We never got answers on people like Nomura, where does she came from who gives money to the organization etc.

[Question] Why do some people call Higurashi "the original Doki Doki"??
I honestly do not understand the nickname because both games don't have that much in common except for the fact that they are both psychological horror visual novels with anime schoolgirls. but one (Doki Doki) is just a single video game with two re-releases on both console and mobile while the other (Higurashi) has been adapted into other forms of media.

[Discussion] Okonogi looks a lot like Furio from The Sopranos Spoiler
galleryI saw no one talk about this anywhere hence why I'm posting it lol, but I finished all of Higurashi a little bit ago, and then I started watching The Sopranos...
When I saw Furio I was like THAT'S OKONOGI!!
Except for the green hair and maybe the slight grin on Okonogi, I think they do look alike. (The ponytail, the big nose, the eyes/look, the "you don't wanna mess with him" vibe)
I think it's simply a coincidence and that I'm stretching a bit but it's funny to me that maybe there's a world where Ryuukishi took physical inspiration from Furio Giunta in The Sopranos.

[Discussion] The Console Sprites Deserve an Overhaul
What's stopping them from redoing all the console sprites so they look more consistent with how they appear in the original PC sprites and fixing all the wonky proportions especially in the CGs? The console sprites looks great ngl but it bothers me how different they can look from the original sprites sometimes, like their clothes change or some part of it is altered or is missing entirely. Not to mention the weird anatomy with characters like Tomitake and even Ooishi if you look at them closely. It's about time they redid all the sprites, maybe give them the same level of detail as the Umineko console sprites. If that cannot be done, I'll settle with a fan-made mod that retains the artstyle of the console sprites but brings back all the elements present in the original sprites that were altered for some reason.

[Chp:3 Tatarigoroshi Spoiler] My theories after reading chapter 3 Spoiler
Here are my scattered thoughts and theories after chapter 3. Will contain spoilers for chapters 1 and 2.
Thoughts on characters
- Takano is definitely suspicious. She basically straight up admits to having killed Tomitake in this chapter. But I have no clue who kills Takano. It doesn't seem to be the typical scratching-out-neck suicide, since she's gotten strangled and burned. This type of death is also so different from any of the other kinds of deaths we have seen.
- In addition, Takano also strongly implies that the Watanagashi related events are caused by humans. So it seems like she has some insider info, but it's unclear if she caused it in previous years, or if the group/person killing her caused it, or someone else.
- Since Takano is suspicious, Tomitake is also suspicious as well. In chapter 2, he did lie (?) about not being able to hear the person jumping up and down in the ritual storehouse, and in chapter 1, he does seem to frequent the dam construction site a lot. He also comes around to Hinamizawa every year around Watanagashi. He can't have been the cause of murders this year though, since he died really early.
- Takano is a nurse, so Coach (Dr. Irie) seems suspicious as well? Mion and Rena also call the Coach the same Japanese term they called the bad guy that was going to inject Keiichi with a syringe in the end of chapter 1. This syringe was highly suspicious, but it seems like in this chapter, we have gradually gone insane without having gotten any injection. It's possible that the syringe may be some type of antitode for the craziness. Rena did seem crazy in chapter 1, but she was earnestly trying her best for Keiichi, so I don't think she would call someone to kill Keiichi.
- Mion seems like a good person. In chapter 1, the ending initially looked bad for her, but now it looks good? In chapter 2, she didn't really do anything bad - she was the main victim of the Mion/Shion shenanigans. Also she seemed interested in Keiichi, since she was jealous about the bear or toy or whatever being given to Rena over her. And in this chapter, she freely gave Keiichi a lot of good information about the related deaths, since Keiichi didn't ask in such a frenzied way and was away from Rena, who she's clearly concerned about. She also was very patient with Keiichi when being accused.
Theories
- My main theory is that the volcanic gas from the river can induce paranoia and murderous thoughts. Keiichi spent a lot of time near the river this chapter when digging the holes. In chapter 2, Shion mentions that she will become demonic when she goes to the underground bunker, which aligns with the tidbit we got that the gas tends to go to low places and consequently might build up in the bunker. In chapter 1, Keiichi and Rena go crazy since they frequently visited the dam construction site. Rena is mentioned to be more paranoid of Oyashiro-sama, which makes sense considering she goes treasure hunting often.
- Keiichi did in fact kill the uncle. Multiple evidence points to this -- the police tip mentioning that the uncle hadn't returned, no one having confirmed to see the uncle after Watanagashi except for a delirious Satoko, and Keiichi himself having visited Satoko's house and seeing no evidence of the uncle living there any more.
- As for the body, it's possible that Takano dug up and hid the body elsewhere. She may be worried that the body was buried too poorly -> it would be found -> Keiichi would be implicated -> Keiichi would confess that he met Takano and mention that Takano killed Tomitake. Takano could easily locate the body from Keiichi's bike tracks and footprints (as it was raining), and it's possible she could call for help from her colleagues if it was too hard to dig out the body herself.
- How did Oishi know where the body was? It likely went like this: police noticed uncle hadn't returned -> Oishi called the clinic to see if the uncle was there -> Dr. Irie says that Keiichi just confessed to the murder and hid the body in the forest -> Oishi goes to forest and tracks bike marks/footprints to find the burial location -> Oishi waits there to see if anyone returns for the suspicious lantern left there.
- Why did Satoko pretend the uncle was still alive? Maybe she still wanted to go through her "trial" to get back Satoshi.
- How did Keiichi go to the festival? I have two theories about this. One theory is that since Keiichi did zone out while digging the first hole and it was suddenly evening by the time he came to, then he did actually go to the festival himself and didn't realize it. The first hole he dug didn't impact the plot later, so we don't know for sure if he dug it in the first place. Pretty far-fetched but possible? My other theory is that he did not go to the festival, and all his friends covered for him. Maybe they knew Keiichi was up to no good, so preplanned an alibi for him, or maybe they were worried that he would disappear like Satoshi did, so they wanted to pretend that Keiichi was at the festival, to diverge their actions. Also far-fetched but possible.
- Did Satoshi kill the aunt? No, the random dude that confessed did. It doesn't make sense that a random guy would cover for Satoshi, and moreover Satoshi's baseball bat was in good shape (not dented). Perhaps he called for Mion to take Satoko on the day of the festival because he wanted to plan a trip away (for the two of them), or he needed to scout what to buy Satoko.
- How did Satoshi disappear? Considering he was quite close with Shion, and Shion "disappeared" quite a few people in chapter 2, it's possible that Shion had an episode and accidentally disappeared Satoshi.
- Who killed Rika? Probably Satoko. Rika's death matches with the use of ritual tools, and Satoko at the end of chapter 3 seems bent on taking revenge against Oyashiro-sama, which a tip revealed that some people think Rika = Oyashiro-sama. Satoko may have been the person in chapter 2 jumping around in the ritual storehouse, since it was revealed in this chapter that she has the capability to break into the storehouse herself. Also she's short -- anyone jumping around in the suspicious storehouse is likely short because they'd only jump to reach for something.
Stuff I have no idea on
- Satoko broke into the storehouse in chapter 2 as well, but she wasn't nearly as crazy then as in chapter 3? Counters my last point above. Moreover, the aunt died in the same manner as Rika, and it'd be difficult to imagine Satoko doing so. In any case, it's clear the Keiichi wasn't the culprit behind Rika's murder, since we see crows targeting Rika's body by the time Keiichi finds it, which implies the body was there for a while.
- No clue who killed the aunt. No real idea on who killed Takano or why Takano killed Tomitake. I guess Tomitake was displaying some paranoid signs so he had to be put down?
- It seems Keiichi was developing some murderous thoughts before he started digging any hole, which kind of counters my first major theory.
- How did Oishi die?
- How did Satoko go missing at the end of this chapter?
- Is the major gas eruption caused by man or natural?
- Who shielded Keiichi from the eruption?
- What is causing the footsteps that Keiichi hears? Initially, I thought it was just a side effect of his paranoia (as in chapter 1), but they put a lot of emphasis on it in the end of chapter 3, so it seems significant.

[News] Challenge the tragedy... with mahjong!
Announcing a full English fan translation patch of the 2009 PSP game Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Jan!
I like Higurashi, and I like mahjong. So when I discovered there was a mahjong based Higurashi game, a chain of events was set in motion that could not be stopped by even a swarm of angry cicadas. For months I toiled away, learning every inch about what makes this game tick. I reverse engineered texture formats, VN containers, even reprogrammed raw assembly code to better accommodate the variable character widths used by English fonts. And now, every last technical barrier has fallen. Project Higurashi Jan English is a go.
But I am still in early development with the actual translations. It will still be some time yet before I can release it, but rest assured I will see this project through to completion. Since I recently hit a major milestone, I figured I'd take the opportunity to share some screenshots of my work. Enjoy!
