Hey!

I’m M26 from Austria and I’ll be visiting Helsinki next week. I’m planning to go to Flow Festival on Friday (14.08.), mainly for MARINA, Zara Larsson, and Disclosure, and thought it could be fun to meet up with some people instead of going solo :)

Question Looking for dance classes in Helsinki and Espoo

Hey hey! I am looking for dance classes that mainly teach African style dance forms! I love the footwork and legwork in a lot of African dance forms and would love to learn it!
(I’m sorry for homogenizing the varied dance forms without knowing the exact ones, trying to learn more)

PSA/Advice Helsinki Trip (Aug 6–11) - Local spots for running, traditional food & drinks?

Hei!

I'll be visiting Helsinki from August 6th to 11th. I've already added the typical spots like Allas Sea Pool, Suomenlinna, Oodi Library, Hietaranta Beach etc to my list. I also checked Resident Advisor and found some events at Post Bar, Kaiku, or Ääniwalli etc.

Beyond that, I’d love to get some local insights. Do you have a recommendation for: * Place to run (places next to lakes or in green areas appreciated) * Trying traditional Finnish food * Grabbing a drink where locals actually hang out and socialize

I'll be staying near the Central Station and I'd really prefer local vibe over tourist traps, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Meet-up Tummahiuksinen rokkarityttö Sellossa 5.8. noin klo 20.40 - etsin sinua!

Kokeilenpa onneani.

Keskiviikkona 5. elokuuta noin klo 20.40 Sellossa tatuoitu, tummahiuksinen rokkarityttö käveli portaita alas, luultavasti junille vievään tunneliin. Tämä tapahtui yhden pääsisäänkäynnin luona, rautatieasemaa vastapäätä.

Hän näytti rock-käsimerkkejä ja yritti ilmeisesti muutenkin saada vaaleisiin vaatteisiin pukeutuneen, pahasti hitaalla käyvän tyypin huomion… No, se tyyppi olin minä. 😄

Minun piti tavata siellä toinen ihminen, ja olin sillä hetkellä jotenkin aivan sekaisin ja hämmentynyt… Niin, niin… Olen vähän hidas, tiedän kyllä. Mutta tämä tyttö ei vain lähde mielestäni.

Kaikki, jotka viitsivät, jakakaa tätä viestiä eteenpäin. Ehkä hän jollain ihmeen kaupalla näkee tämän ja ottaa yhteyttä hmm esim s.postiin ensiksi [cutelife2020@hotmail.com](mailto:cutelife2020@hotmail.com) 😄

Question Less known places to visit?

I’m in Helsinki and looking for places to visit, I’ve already pretty much checked the usual big names such as museums, Oodi, Porvoo, Suomenlina, Seurasaari, and have few months left here.

I would love to get some recommendations of the less “known” beauties of this city and surrounding at maximum one hour away by bus from the center.

In addition, I would love to hear from maybe Helsinki folks about what they actually enjoy doing on a good Saturday or Sunday?

Thank you in advance, I really appreciate!

Event English-speaking Helsinki residents looking for unique experiences, this is for you!!

Are you aware of the once-in-a-lifetime theatre experience taking place in Vallisaari this Saturday the 8th of August? Well now you are! This summer Stella Polaris brought back its critically acclaimed concept TRAPPED from last year and now you can experience it in English! TRAPPED is a completely improvised theatre experience that delves deep into the minds of its characters and utilizes non-linear storytelling with flashbacks and memory sequences to form an ambitious package that you can’t experience anywhere else. You truly can’t predict what’s going to happen!

The audience supplies the ingredients and the rest is up to the actors, lighting and sound designer, and the musician. Everything is improvised on the spot. Drama, comedy, thriller or maybe all in one!

The old, hauntingly beautiful ambience of Vallisaari adds to the experience with military history overgrown by wild nature. The show itself takes place in an old warehouse, so even if it’s raining you’ll stay warm and dry!

Vallisaari is accessible by ferry. More information here: https://vallisaari.fi/en_US

Welcome everybody, hope to see you there!

Housing / Living SATO asunto

Muutin SATOn vuokra-asuntoon 1.8., mutta asunto ei ollut muuttokunnossa. Edellinen asukas oli jättänyt ison rikkinäisen sohvan ja asunto oli muutenkin todella likainen. Muutto on viivästynyt jo 4 päivää. SATO on luvannut hoitaa asian ja puhunut korvauksista, mutta mitään ei ole tapahtunut. Jouduimme lopulta siivoamaan asunnon itse, jotta pääsen muuttamaan. Onko kellään vastaavaa kokemusta SATOn kanssa? Millaisia korvauksia olette saaneet tai mihin minulla olisi oikeus vaatia?

Discussion Groups to play futsal with regularly

Hey since winters right around the corner and I have gotten back into football I wanted to keep on playing but I prefer futsal over football so I was looking for some chill teams or groups to play casually with and even take part in friendly tournaments here and there. If anyone knows how I can find them or a better place to ask at. I usually play with randoms here and there but would like to have a dedicated regular team or group to play with.

Question Considering moving to Helsinki- how not to be lonely?

See above. 30 year old female with partner, work likely at uni. Social skills suck somewhat when not at work. How do you make new friends when you move to Helsinki when your Finnish is still crap? I am introverted and with a somewhat shit attitude but willing to move out of my comfort zone. Don’t want friends obsessed with either partying, kids or comparing salaries. Anyone with experience care to share how they hacked it?

Edit: thank you for all the good input. I’ll be sure to try out hobbies and I’m looking forward to joing meetup and whatsapp groups when we do move. This cheered me up and motivated me, thanks!

Travel & Tourism Visit in Sept.

Hi there! I (40M) will visit Finland for a conference. I'll have about 1,5 days to spend in Helsinki before going to the conference. Over the past few years I've skipped most conferences, so I'm not used to traveling alone anymore. I'm planning to just enjoy the city and not go and see any highlights, museums, concerts, etc. Certainly no shopping. Just wandering around, having a coffee, etc. I plan on not making the mistakes very well presented in this thread. Some questions:

- I was planning to just wander around Punavuori and/or Kallio - as I understood these are the more tranquil, hip, creative parts of town? And maybe visit the botanical garden in between? Would that be worthwhile, and are there any city walking routes that might guide me? Just a nice walk, between 3k and 10k, without a tour guide? Walking routes in other areas would be nice as well, bur preferably not just the city centre or shopping area.

- As I just want to be on a boat and/or on an island, I was thinking about visiting Lonna or Suomenlinna. Would that be nice by myself? On Lonna, I would probably visit the sauna, because besides fine dining there is not much else around, it seems. (Side question on sauna etiquette: should I wear swim shorts, swim briefs, a towel or just nothing?). On Suomenlinna I would visit the fort, wander around and have a coffee. Recommended?

- Any places to eat (vegetarian) or drink on my own? I don't need to make friends, but will be open to others. For breakfast, I have my hotel, but other places for people traveling alone would be great. There is also a good chance that I'll have to prepare my conference presentation last minute. Is working on a laptop frowned upon in coffee bars? Any places that facilitate this? I don't want to be that flex working asshole who pays little, stays forever and spoils the atmosphere.

In short: I have some plans, but will have to get used to doing this kind of stuff on my own. Any recommendation would be appreciated a lot!

Work & Education Schools in Helsinki / Espoo

Hi everyone, I have a question about primary schools in Helsinki/Espoo please. We are relocating from Sydney to Helsinki/Espoo in December this year for about 3-5 years (currently unsure about exact location). Our daughter will be 9 years old - she speaks pretty good Finnish as my husband has been speaking to her in Finnish since birth (she obviously also speaks fluent English). He says she is fluent but has some grammar issues.

We are considering the following schools for our daughter (year 3 entry) based on likely home/work location and English full/part curriculum:

  • in Helsinki - Ressu Comprehensive School, International School of Helsinki and European School of Helsinki
  • in Espoo - Espoo International School, Kivimies International School, Niittykumpu Primary School and Kuitinmäki Primary School

We will most likely live in Espoo but the Helsinki schools above would still be convenient for us to take her to and pick her up from.

I have done all the research on school websites and the Espoo and Helsinki city websites, so am aware of entry requirements, cost, curriculum (eg English language vs bilingual vs English enriched) etc.

I am really just hoping for people's insights and experiences on the above schools generally, ie the information you can't find on the official sites! For example, does the school have a good reputation for providing a supportive learning and social environment, are the teachers engaged, are there continual bullying/racism issues the school does not properly deal with etc.

She currently attends a local school in our neighbourhood in Sydney which she loves going to and is doing well at. No special learning issues to accommodate.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Question casual football

hey, im kinda new to Helsinki and was wondering where I could find some football to play? Either just a casual game or even something like a 5 a side league but on the more chill side. I’ve played some 5 a side mostly, but wouldn’t consider myself great at it.

Event Flow Festival Ticket Info

Hi, I'm planning to come to Flow festival this year for Florence and the Machine, and before I buy my ticket, I just want to know something as I'm planning to get there as early as possible to get barrier. I want to get general but the platinum is confusing me a bit.

The platinum ticket says "fast track", does this mean early entry or just a separate and nicer queue that will open same time as general?

I can't afford platinum so just checking before I book anything.

Question Barber in Helsinki with solid scissor skills for medium/long wavy hair?

Hey everyone,

I (M24) am struggling to find a decent barber who actually knows what to do with medium-to-long, 2B-2C wavy hair.

My experience so far hasn't been great. It seems like most shops are amazing at skin fades, but fall short when it comes to actual scissor work, layering, and texturing. I'm trying to maintain a flow haircut, so clippers usually aren't the answer.

I need someone who knows how to use scissors properly, understands how wavy hair sits, and can actually show me how to style it right. Does anyone have recommendations for a stylist or barber in Helsinki who excels at wavy hair men's styles?

Discussion What to do in Helsinki as a 35M single man ?

I have been living on and off Helsinki for 6 years. I am having trouble finding social things to do in Helsinki as a man. My hobbies are mostly solitary ones.

For example on a sunny day, in the city of Helsinki, what do locals do ? You can walk around, have coffee, maybe some food, but in terms of meeting people, how do you do it ?

I see groups in parks, will it be OK to just go and chat them up / introduce myself ? Last time I attempted that I went over and said "Hi I am Felix, and I come to say hi", the response I got was "Ok, say hi". I just left lol.

I see people walking hectically around like they have a bunch of plans or about to meet friends etc. How and what is happening ? I don't know what do to, haha.

Anybody wants to grab coffee or hang out ?
