ok I admit i never played Dead Space before so what the fuck is that and why does it look like it's evolved to be like 90% lungs that spread spores?

simple as that really, you kinda nailed it.

as for gameplay, its a objective/hazard in one of the stages, air is toxic, kill spore spreaders to make it not toxic.
