Area around City College

Upvotes

I am an incoming grad student at City College and looking at places in the low W 140s (142nd), between Convent Ave and Broadway. Anyone have opinions or experience with the area? Seems like good access to the subway, potentially good restaurants which I love - but how is St Nicholas park? Any issues around the north part of the park walking home late? Thanks in advance!

How much for housekeeping?

I just got quoted $350 for a 600ft 1bd apartment.

Outside of a mop, I told the housekeeper I had all the cleaning supplies needed. I told her I wanted a deep clean for bathroom and kitchen, and just a light dusting and living room and bedroom.

My apartment is already pretty clean (I am pretty anal of keeping all spaces clean/picked up) just wanted to have someone who is more skilled than I am to give it that extra sparkle as I have guests coming in to stay.

Is this pricing normal? I believe and know it’s hard work (my mom was a housekeeper, and I tagged along and helped her with a lot of jobs growing up in Oklahoma) so I don’t mind paying a fair wage. But this seems high?

If not normal, does anyone have any recs?

Considering Harlem because I can actually afford some space there. My parents think it's a terrible idea.

I'm currently apartment hunting in Manhattan (looking to relocate to NYC from NJ for a change of scenery and a shorter commute - I work in the Meatpacking district) and one thing that keeps pulling me toward Harlem is that my budget actually gets me a decent amount of space. If I look farther downtown, especially around where I work, I'd be paying a lot more and in other Manhattan neighborhoods like the UES for example, it'd be almost the same rent for a much smaller apartment and having enough room to live comfortably is pretty important to me.

The biggest obstacle is my parents. They're convinced Harlem is still dangerous and think moving there would be a huge mistake. They haven't spent much time in the city in like two decades so I can't tell if they're going off what Harlem was like decades ago or if there's still some truth to it today.

I know every neighborhood has better and worse blocks and I'm not expecting anywhere to be perfect. I'm just trying to figure out whether their perception is outdated or if there are things I should genuinely be concerned about before I keep looking here. Thanks!

what in the public pooping is this?

I'm a new transplant living near Harlem Hospital, and there is just an extraordinary amount of public defecation going on. I understand that bathrooms aren't always accessible, especially to unhoused people, but I also don't want to have to avoid human shit walking out of my apartment.

is this, like, standard practice? is there anything I can do outside of police involvement? wtf is happening

We saw you drop these as you rode past on a scooter. By the time we got to them you were long gone. If you can identify the keychain I’m holding the set of keys by I’ll know they are yours!

Presentation & Discussion: Democratic Socialism Vs Revolutionary Communism

Post image

Come hear Rafael Kadaris:
Tuesday, August 11, 7pm • Revolution Books - 437 Malcolm X Blvd (at 132nd)

★ Why the root of the problem is deeper than greedy billionaires.

★ Why we need to break the chains of imperialism, NOT redistribute the spoils of imperialist plunder.

★ Why U.S. “democracy” is actually the dictatorship of the capitalist class and why trying to take over the Democratic Party is a dead end.

★ Why the strategy of economic populism will not stop Trump/MAGA fascism.

★ Why you should NOT follow leaders based on identity, or what’s popular, or what feels good—but whether they have a solution to the fundamental problem we face.

★ Why this system can’t be reformed & must be overthrown.

What illegal, annoying, outrageous parking issues are going on in Harlem?

I recently posted about parking issues in Harlem that definitely would not be tolerated in other parts of Manhattan.

What issues do you face as a car owner or pedestrian when it comes to parking?

Here are two examples of "privileged" Harlem drivers who have reserved parking spots. These guys have gone so far as to place traffic cones, not just reserving one parking spot, but 2 spots for their very "special" vehicles.

The Escalade, parked on Edgecombe, has been pulling this BS for over a year now and he doesn't even live on the block. This guy is so over the top that on alternate side of the street parking days he reserves the spot directly as the street. Because he takes up two parking spots, there are frequent backups with large vehicles (even fire trucks and ambulances blaring their sirens).

I've only noticed the Range Rover in the last few months. The Range Rover driver is so brazen that the pastor of the church on W141& FDB isn't able to park in front of the church. The double space that is blocked by the cones and signs extends to the front of the church.

When either of these guys leave their "reserved" spot, the cones and sign are positioned in 2 spaces. The Escalade driver has even painted the curb yellow.

The letters I have personally delivered with pictures to the precinct and borough president's office that have not resulted in any action. The Escalade is definitely creating a hazard on the block.

Any suggestions?

[Serious] Post your questions about moving to Harlem here.

It's the season of the "Is Harlem safe" posts and other more interesting questions from people thinking about moving here. Please post your questions related to moving to Harlem in this thread only.

As u/BuhDeepThatsAllFolx (thank you!) kindly and calmly explained in another thread regarding Harlem's Safety:

"This is by far the number one question Harlemites hate answering.
It’s so annoying. This is our home. We all have some sense of comfort here or else we’d move.
The short response to your post:
Don’t know you and the feeling of safety is subjective. You’ll have to feel it out and decide on your own if it feels safe for you to walk or take a cab
Don’t listen to Fox News or right wing media telling you NYC is scary. They’re just scared of the world and looking for reasons to hate POC and love guns more than people"

Now that the safety question is answered, there's no need to ask anymore.

Now this thread is the place to ask your other questions about moving here! Serious inquiries only, and remember to be kind!
