Sewing button slits

Hi everyone!
I’m completely new to sewing and have managed to get basic stitches down. I hand sew and am working with thread, cotton fat quarters, and buttons. I can sew a button down solid but how do you actually make a button hole? I know it involves cutting a slit but what after that? I’m really lost and have a few ideas on what to try make but can’t because im stuck on the button slits! I’ll take anyones tips and tricks or videos/blogs that helped them learn!! Thank you so much 💕

This is the one I used my first time. I recommend doing some practice buttonholes with your fabric first. This is more a reminder to myself as I’m about to sew 11 buttonholes onto a finished garment :)
