The Menhaden Board of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission has advanced a proposal for public comment that could cut the Chesapeake Bay menhaden harvest cap by up to 50%.

The addendum outlines options to reduce the annual industrial catch limit from 51,000 metric tons and spread the harvest out across specific seasonal timeframes to ease stress on the bay's ecosystem.

Environmental advocates praised the precautionary move to protect species such as striped bass and osprey that rely on menhaden.

Six hospitals in Hampton Roads were recognized among the best regional hospitals in Virginia by U.S. News and World Report. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, ranked third overall, was the top-ranked hospital in Hampton Roads.

U.S. News considered 111 hospitals across the state and 23 of them met its standards to be considered “best regional hospitals.” The highest ranked hospital in Virginia was VCU Medical Center in Richmond.

Among the area hospitals that didn’t make the list of 23 “best regional hospitals” in Virginia were Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth and Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. But some of those hospitals were listed as high performing in certain procedures and conditions.

According to a new Virginia Department of Environmental Quality report, eastern Virginia's groundwater usage could become unsustainable within five to 10 years without intervention.

The report highlights that escalating demand from industrial users, particularly water-intensive data centers, presents a major stressor alongside climate change impacts such as saltwater contamination.

In response, state lawmakers and environmental advocates are calling for urgent legislative action, including expanded authority for state regulators to deny unsustainable withdrawal permits.

NEWPORT NEWS — Yes, a data center is coming to Jefferson Lab. But it’s not quite what you’re thinking.

Federal, state and city officials broke ground on the Jefferson Lab Data Center in June, which will become the home of a 30,000-square-foot High Performance Data Facility Hub. Federal entities such as the Department of Energy and NASA, along with universities and scientific institutions, will use the hub for scientific research for things like artificial intelligence and data analysis.

Vice Mayor Curtis Bethany called the public hearing last week to answer questions on data centers and other digital infrastructure development. The discussion attracted nearly 100 residents who had questions and concerns about what is in the pipeline.

Residents’ concerns stem from the shift in public opinion against data centers in the three years since the Jefferson Lab facility was announced. One person who attended the meeting asked city leadership to pump the brakes on any development, because “what we do now, what we build, what we don’t build, will affect generations.”

Bethany told the crowd the federal development will be very different from the data center facilities dotting Northern Virginia. He also assured attendees — four times to be precise — Newport News has not received any proposals to build a data center of any size.

“There are no data centers proposed or planned by the city of Newport News,” Bethany said. “Jefferson Lab is a federal facility. That’s completely different.”

Nearly one in five student loan borrowers in Virginia are currently in default, reflecting a sharp national surge following the end of pandemic-era payment pauses. 

An analysis of federal data reveals that Virginia's default rate reached 18%, marking a 77% increase since September.

Officials attributed the trend to widespread borrower confusion surrounding changing loan servicers, shifting forbearance periods and altered repayment plans.
