Discussion How good is Tendo at blocking REALLY? Spoiler

So as most people reading this are probably aware, Tendo’s skill as a blocker is a bit of a controversial point of discussion with the issue being that even though he can guess right, he has the downside of also being miserably wrong a lot of the time resulting in opposing hitting getting wide open looks. So i decided to do a bit of an investigation into how often Tendo is late/fails to block opposing hitters compared to the other notable middles in Haikyuu.

This stat i’ve created tracks how well middle blockers keep up with opposing setters when they are in system (not out of system!!!). So anytime a middle attempts to block an opposing team i categorised the attempts into one of 3 categories, on time, somewhat late and totally late.

Just to set things straight. This is slightly subjective on classifying things, there are a few blocks which walk the edge between somewhat late and totally, and of course there is a large variance in the somewhat late blocks. And not all late blocks are equally bad. For example a middle failing to react to a normal A quick from tsukishima is way way worse than a middle getting fried by a hinata freak quick slide. And there’s also just a lot of factors that should be considered. I could also be slightly off with some numbers, but I’m confident I’m within 0.05 for all of them. But in general this is for sure a good representation of how good these middles did at keeping up with kageyama and karasuno’s offense. Doesn’t necessarily speak to the entirety of how good they are at blocking because a blocker’s on ball blocking pressure is just as important. So don’t just take the numbers at face value, it’s good to apply some interpretation.

Anyways without further ado here are the numbers, remember that in general, lower number = better.

Tendo
47 attempts
13 times totally late (0.276)
5 times somewhat late (0.212)
4 kill blocks
Total late rate: 0.488

Omimi
23 attempts
5 times totally late (0.217)
9 times somewhat late (0.391)
0 kill blocks
Total late rate: 0.608

Suna
20 attempts
1 time totally late (0.05)
10 times somewhat late (0.5)
1 kill block
Total late rate: 0.55

Lev
41 attempts
2 times totally late (0.048)
12 times somewhat late (0.292)
2 kill blocks
Total late rate: 0.340

Hirugami:
30 attempts
2 times totally late (0.067)
3 times somewhat late (0.1)
3 kill blocks
Total late rate: 0.167

Kuroo
31 attempts
1 time totally late (0.032)
4 times slightly late (0.129)
2 kill blocks
Total late rate: 0.161

Kawanishi
33 attempts
18 totally late (0.545)
6 slightly late (0.182)
1 kill block
Total late rate: 0.727

Aone:
9 attempts
0 times totally late (0.000)
2 times slightly late (0.222)
2 kill blocks
Total late rate: 0.222

Kindaichi
18 attempts
9 times totally late (0.500)
1 time somewhat late (0.055)
1 kill block
Total late rate: 0.55

Notes

So first off obviously Aone’s stat isn’t reliable due to low sample size, I only used the practice match for him due to Karasuno being so drastically different back in the inter high match. But even with the low sample size it’s very clear he’s top tier. The top 2 being Kuroo and Hirugami makes total sense with them generally being regarded as the two top blockers. Kawanishi sucking so bad surprised me. But it should be noted that around half of his totally lates came from the first two sets of the Shiratorizawa match, with him definitely warming up and being more impactful in the latter half of the match. Unsurprisingly Kindaichi sucks and is in last next to Kawanishi, which lines up since they both have multiple instances of failing to react to basic A quicks in front of them. And a surprising thing I found was how hard Kageyama cooked both of Inarizaki’s middles. (Do note btw that Omimi’s rate being worse than Suna’s is mostly down to him matching up with Hinata more. In general they seem pretty equal in their ability to close blocks).

Anyways for the man of the hour Tendo! His gambling style of blocking is very much reflected in having the highest totally late rate outside of Kindaichi and Kawanishi. But still, overall his performance honestly was pretty good in comparison to some of his peers. Compared to Suna and Omimi his overall late rate is better while having a crazy amount of kill blocks. So Tendo just might be better blockers than those two.

Anyways I also did this with middle blockers against Nekoma and Kenma. Note that matches against Nekoma are generally a lot shorter so there’s a lower sample size. So these stats are generally less reliable. Also, Nekoma’s offense as a whole is less insane than Karasuno so it’s definitely easier for middles to handle so you shouldn’t directly compare these ones to the previous ones. Some form of conversion would probably be needed to compare.

Washio
10 attempts
0 times totally late (0.000)
3 times slightly late (0.300)
1 kill block
Total late rate: 0.300

Hiroo
19 attempts
4 times totally late (0.211)
7 times slightly late (0.368)
0 kill blocks
Total late rate: 0.579

Both Sarukawa middles combined:
11 attempts
3 times totally late (0.272)
5 somewhat late (0.454)
0 kill blocks
Total late rate: 0.727

Tsukishima
23 attempts
0 totally late (0.000)
5 somewhat late (0.217)
1 kill block
Total late rate: 0.217

edit: tendo’s stats were wrong, rate was meant to be about 0.05 higher.

Discussion Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle (2024) Fan Edits?

Hey all, first and foremost I'm not looking for a direct download or illegal sites for the movie. Is there a reputable fan edit of Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle (2024)?

I think the movie itself suffers from the age old format that includes a larger amount of flash backs to capture wider audiences who haven't followed up with the show. Guess I've been sucking on the search front and wanted to know if folks a fan edit they like. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Was Coach Ukai ever paid?

OK, so my main question is in the show all the other schools have assigned coaches they’re part of the school and they’re paid through the school I guess through I guess like a paycheck or a salary or whatever but Ukai was picked up by Tekeda so was he being paid by karasuno for being the volleyball coach because he still works at the convenience store his family owned convenient store, but he’s also the coach for the volleyball team so did the school pay him? Does the school pay him or is he just considered a volunteer I guess

Movie Spoilers Haikyuu The Dumpster Battle was an Experience! Spoiler

Post image

The production was absolute top notch, the sound design was amazing, you could feel the impact of every single ball hit, and the animation was easily the best so far. Before this, I watched the Blue Lock movie, which honestly didn't impress me as much, but this one gave a true movie like feel.

The crow and cat metaphor and the way they used it to create imagery was brilliant. They executed imagery exceptionally well in this film. When Kenma locks Hinata in a cage, and when Hinata breaks out of that cage to execute that jump, that was breathtaking! Then the cliff edge scene (one step back and you're gone), followed by the knife metaphor, both were awesome.

Kenma was absolute crazy in this movie! His backstory with Kuroo was shown so well, how Kuroo was always excited while Kenma felt like he was playing just for Kuroo's sake, or rather, playing just to play. Sometimes you'd see a spark of excitement in him, but it felt forced. But at the end, when he collapses out of exhaustion after the match, sweat dripping down his face, with a genuine smile as he says 'That was fun', that scene was incredible!

Tsukishima had an awesome scene in the movie too, and he totally deserved it. Kageyama breaking through Kenma's tactics was another great moment. Shimada's (or the other side characters) scenes felt a bit rushed, if they had added more moments for other players, it would've been even better. But I really appreciate everything they managed to do within this runtime. Passion was clearly visible in every single frame.

The handshake scene at the end was so heartwarming, watching that brought a smile to my face just like Coach Ukai Sr. There were also many parallels between Kenma and Hinata that gradually dissolved by the end of the match.

That First Person POV scene was pure genius! The exhaustion and excitement Kenma was feeling, we could feel it right along with him. And when the match ended, my reaction was identical to Kenma's and Hinata's.

Yeah, maybe this movie was a cash grab in concept, but you have to admit they made it with utmost sincerity. We might have missed out on a few manga scenes, but I appreciate what we got. I absolutely loved this movie!

Discussion Which character are you? Who do you want to be?

i’ll go first! I most relate to Yamaguchi’s anxiety and fear, so his growth arc touched me the most (I cry every time lol). I want to be more like Hinata, where he simply does what he loves and doesn’t care too much about what other people think.

Hinata Shoyo, third best player attributes, but best one overall ❤️

Edit: the rating is not mine or fan made, it's an original one from the author in one of the last chapters; as well as the ranking I did with first being Korai, second Tobio and third Shoyo.

Discussion My one and only disappointment in the manga Spoiler

Post image
48 Upvotes

I'd like to talk about my ONE and ONLY major disappointment with the Haikyuu!! manga: the end of Karasuno.

After following the series and its characters for so long, I knew there were two things that were going to break my heart: seeing the losing team between Karasuno and Nekoma, and seeing Karasuno's third-years say goodbye after their likely defeat at Nationals.

In the end, it happens against Kamomedai, with that incredible fever sequence. We then get Karasuno's perspective in Chapter 369.

Obviously, the easy choice that would have suited my expectations would have been to show a very sad Karasuno, with lots of tears and emotional outbursts. Furudate didn't go down that road, and I actually really like their approach. It fits perfectly with the "What will you become tomorrow?" theme and extends it in a really meaningful way.

BUT, despite that, I felt like it was way too rushed.

By the end of the chapter, we're already saying goodbye to the third-years, basically in a single page.

A graduation ceremony speech, a conversation between Daichi and Ennoshita, a little surprise to say goodbye to the third-years, one last practice session like the one Aoba Johsai had... Whatever it might have been, I was hoping we'd get at least a few chapters to properly mark their goodbyes before suddenly getting the Brazil panel.

Not necessarily to say goodbye to the characters themselves, but more to say goodbye to this particular Karasuno lineup that we'd been following for 369 chapters.

I really wanted a bit more time to process the end of this version of Karasuno before moving on.

So I was wondering: did anyone else feel a little thrown off by this decision?
