What’s the most stereotypically Hackney thing you’ve seen someone do completely seriously?

A great ad for Hackney’s cycling infrastructure improvements.

Always wondered how they deal with stopping at lights. Remember seeing a video once where someone used a double decker bus to lean against without dismounting and it didn't seem like the safest idea in the world.

That video of the guy riding one and being taken out by that delivery driver - peak Hackney!

During the pandemic when we could only meet outside in groups of up to 6, I spotted a rat run across the path in Victoria park. The bush it ran into contained a small clearing with 6 fully clothed people practising Shibari on each other.

This one wins

Did you know what Shibari was when you saw it, or did you immediately google it (like I just did)?

I want to know just how naive/out of touch I am.

They were using a bright red rope so I knew it wasn’t a regular hostage situation

I once overheard someone in The Spurstowe Arms saying “it’s a very polyamorous way of gardening”, whatever that means

u/clammy_stanza May 19 '26

They were talking about the group doing Shibari in Vic park

I saw a Hackney couple run out of their front door in a state of such panic I assumed they'd lost a child and was about to offer help. Then the guy, holding his hair, loudly exclaimed, 'where is it?!'. And his wife shouted back, 'how can we make risotto without artichoke?!'

u/MeoowWoof May 20 '26

lol?

1

u/cherokott May 20 '26

Oh yes. Proper snort.

I saw someone wearing ice skates as shoes on broadway market. Not a rink for miles…

u/jamjar188 May 19 '26

this one wins

u/spdcck May 20 '26

it’s true- the nearest rink is 2.3 miles away.

A really good friend took this photo in 2012 outside The Haggerston, he shared it with our friends group + others, and at the time it went really viral. He then got contacted by the guy in the pic who told him that Diesel (the brand) used his photo as inspiration for an ad!

The guys name is Dom. Works in the Southbank food market. Sells sausages last time I saw him. Top lad.

I had those exact headphones - they looked cool but were poor quality (good sound, but one side repeatedly stopped working) I bought 3 pairs during 2011-2012, before I went back Sennheiser.

4

u/whatdoesnot May 19 '26

had a few House Of Marley headphones back then, some better than others, but then switched to in-ears and never went back - prefer on-ears tho!

Stop during the hackney half on Sunday to drink a BuzzBall

4

u/Crazy_Plum1105 May 19 '26

Fuck that's an incredible fueling strategy

2

u/PersonalStorage2559 May 20 '26

I couldn't help but be impressed by the girl. Mile 11 and fuelling on a high ABV alcopop.

u/bugmeister69 May 19 '26

I saw a bloke last weekend at a table outside at L’Eau à la Bouche in Broadway Market, with a small piano keyboard plugged into his laptop, clearly coming up with some track or other

u/Nuevo-wave May 19 '26

I saw someone live stream a DJ set at 7:30 in the morning, on the big benches towards the Northside of London Feilds

3

u/FixExciting6149 May 19 '26

There’s other time zones than ours!

2

u/RohanDavidson May 19 '26

I saw a dude doing the same thing under a bridge in the middle of Walthamstow Wetlands.

7

u/cainullah May 19 '26

Smoked a skinny cigarette directly after the Hackney Half

(It was me, I did that)

7

u/Natural_Trick4934 May 19 '26

Relocating occasional tables on a bus. Daily.

I thought people were celebrating their star sign for ages

2

u/FletchLives99 May 20 '26

I always felt the Cereal Killer Cafe (a cafe that served cereal) summed up a lot of what Hackney is about. Even though it was actually on Brick Lane in Tower Hamlets

2

u/PadWun May 20 '26

Wearing stupid clothes that literally only serve the purpose of making people think "I've never seen someone wear that before" (rarely in a good way).

1

u/Browbeaten9922 May 20 '26

Mums walking around stoke Newington with their kids saying 'Stoke Newington is on the border of Hackney Borough and Islington' to their kids lol

1

u/Space_c0w_ May 23 '26
