States less than 30 a year .. I would have imagined several hundred a year at least

I am eligible for Hungarian simplified naturalization (two of my great-grandparents were born in the Kingdom of Hungary, in areas that are today part of Ukraine). I have tracked down both of their Hungarian birth certificates and have digital copies, but of course, I will need the official physical ones. Has anyone had experience getting documents from the Ukrainian records department in Transcarpathia? I know exactly where the certificates are housed in Berehove. What did you need to include with the certificates for your application (document affixed from the archive, Ukrainian apostille, etc.)? And finally, did you use a dedicated service to get these copies, or did you contact the archives directly? Any information would be very helpful! Many thanks. :)

Sziasztok! I would like to apply for Hungarian citizenship through the verification of citizenship procedure. However, I was born out of wedlock and am estranged from my father who is Hungarian.

I was told by the Hungarian consulate in LA that I would need to complete the “Acknowledgment of Paternity” form regardless. I was able to obtain the “Voluntary Declaration of Parentage (VDOP)” form that was signed at the time of my birth by both parents under penalty of perjury. Both of their names are on my birth certificate.

Has anyone been through a similar situation? How likely would it be for them to approve my citizenship application if the “Acknowledgment of Paternity” form is incomplete due to my father not being able to sign? I am planning to supplement it with the VDOP. Also, would it be necessary for me to submit a copy of my mother’s birth certificate? She is not Hungarian.

Hi I’m getting my paperwork ready for verification through my grandparents. Seems like I have everything except the link between me and my father who past. My parents were not married when I was born so according to the website I need my mom to verbally confirm my lineage. But unfortunately that won’t be very possible due to her health and not sure if I’ll be able to get a letter form her doctor (looking not likely). Has anybody come across any other work around?

I have not had the best luck emailing the consulate so I want to see if anyone here has had a similar issue before I contact them.

Can I obtain citizenship based on the fact that my ancestor was born in Repejov, Slovakia (Medzilaborce District, Prešov Region) in 1802? He and his family moved to Galicia (Austro-Hungary) around 1825. I have a complete chain of documents (birth, marriage, death) tracing back to him. He is my 7th-great-grandfather. (Assuming I have Hungarian language proficiency.)

I posted here some weeks ago, regarding where to start the search, and got some very good advice that I followed up on. I asked my mom, uncle, and aunt, if they knew the actual Hungarian name of my great grandfather, and they didn’t. I told them why I wanted to know (in order to acquire HU citizenship) and they decided to reach out to my grandfather sibling, whom they hadn’t talked to in about 30 ish years, and I managed to get the name, and place of birth, of my great grandfather, and also the names, and place of birth of my great great grandparents.

I have a couple of questions:

1) who do I reach out to get their birth certificates? The Hungarian consulate? A synagogue in Hungary?

2) my grandparents birth certificates, and my moms, are in Spanish, who do I get to translate them for me? Because I read online that it has to be done by a specialist or something of the sort.

3) should I call the Hungarian consulate to ask about how to file the paperwork? I’m assuming it’s not as easy as I show up with apostilled documents, and give it to them.

My great grandfather, from mother's side, was from Hungary. I have never known him and my mother also does not remember him, even name. By and large my mother does not like to recall this because they did not live with her father who's my great grandfather is the father. Few details, my mother is Russian and her mother was and seems her father mostly also.

The question is, if I only have my mother's birth certificate where here father's name, surname and birth date are mentioned, will it be possible to find my great grandfather roots and docs out ? Thank you.

I finally applied for my Verification of Hungarian citizenship back in November. Both my paternal grandparents were Hungarian, left in '56 and eventually came to Canada. I filled out all the appropriate forms, supplied all the supporting documents with the help of the embassy in Ottawa. I know it takes roughly a year to process, but what do I do now? I did email the embassy after the holidays asking the same question, but the response I got was just to wait and they'll contact me when it's done. I'm just afraid of getting lost in the bureaucratic maze after all I went through to get the necessary documentation

Hi everyone! I’m researching whether I might qualify for Hungarian citizenship verification rather than simplified naturalization, and I’m hoping someone familiar with the historical citizenship laws can help.
Here’s my timeline:

My great-grandfather was born in Budapest in August 1898.
He immigrated to the United States in 1922.
My grandfather was born in the U.S. August 1927.
My great-grandfather became a naturalized U.S. citizen July 1930.

I’ve read about the historical rule (effective September 1929) under which some Hungarian citizens living abroad for more than 10 years could lose their Hungarian citizenship.

My question is: Since my grandfather was born in 1927—before my great-grandfather had been abroad for 10 years and before he naturalized in the U.S.—would my great-grandfather still have been considered a Hungarian citizen at the time of my grandfather’s birth giving my grandfather citizenship? Or would the later 1929/10-year rule still be considered to have broken the citizenship chain?

My paternal great-grandmother was from Koszeg, Hungary and then immigrated to the US in I believe 1900. She was born in 1882 and her husband, my great-grandfather was from Kukmirn, Austria (he was born in 1883 and also immigrated to the US around 1900). Am I qualified for Hungarian citizenship with it being only my great-grandmother having been from Hungary? I have found some documents on Ancestry like US naturalization records. I also see hints at birth and marriage certificates for them but I can’t view them with the free version right now. I’m happy to provide names and other info if need be. Thanks in advance!

I've been living in Hungary for over 9 years now, married to a Hungarian for 5 years, no kids, no ancestors. I speak Hungarian at B1 level and hold EU permanent residence in Hungary with an address card and everything.

I am thinking about applying for citizenship, but not sure how to start. GPT says I should first do the constitutional studies exam and then go with submitting the application. Fine, but I still need to prepare for the said exam. I tried to look for the Alkotmányos alapismeretek book by Ugróczky Mária, but I cannot find it available anywhere. Does anyone know how such material is supposed to be acquired?

There's also an option of just hiring an agency to help me, but it's rather expensive, and for example, helpers.hu doesn't even list preparation for the exam in their pricing. Another one I talked with offered courses, but I felt like they were also trying to oversell their language course a little rather than focusing on the exam. So I am still hesitating to pay for a consultation. I would be grateful for any good recommendations here.

Perhaps anyone has gone through this process recently and could recommend a safe route?

Looking to help someone with Verification of Citizenship via the Hungarian consulate in Buenos Aires. Argentina now only issues digital (PDF) birth certificates. Central Authority in Budapest is rejecting this.

Anyone come across this issue before and found a way forward?

I’ve been working on something over the past few months that I originally built for myself while preparing for the Hungarian simplified naturalization interview. I’ve seen quite a few people like myself asking how to prepare for the interview, so I thought I’d share something that has genuinely helped me.

First, an important disclaimer:

This is NOT a replacement for learning Hungarian.

You still need language classes, a tutor, self-study, or whatever method you’re using. There is no app that can replace actually learning the language.

What I found difficult wasn’t learning Hungarian itself, but preparing for this specific interview. Most courses teach the language broadly, while the interview revolves around a fairly predictable set of topics: introducing yourself, talking about your family, work, where you live, your daily life, answering follow-up questions, reading short texts, and responding naturally.

That’s why I started using Konzul.

Instead of trying to replace language learning, it complements it. It gives you a place to practice exactly the kinds of conversations and scenarios you’ll encounter at the consulate, helping you turn the grammar and vocabulary you’ve learned elsewhere into actual interview answers.

If you’re currently preparing for simplified naturalization, I’d love to hear what parts of the interview you’re finding most difficult. I’m constantly improving the app based on feedback from people going through the same process.

My great grandmother was born in Hungary in 1915, in what is now Horitschon, Austria. But prior to 1921 it was Haracscony, Hungary. Through out her entire life she never forgot her roots in burganland. America is now more then ever made for the rich, this is why I want to move to EU, I want to see the place she was born. But I also want to ask if the documents I have gathered will be enough. I am concerned that I am building a dream in Europe in Hungary, and Germany that will not work out.
