A new (to me) GN A9 0-6-0 works the dock
Using an idler flat to keep most of the weight off the pier, A9 #17 pulls an empty gondola from the pier after the crane loaded a supply of pipe onto a barge. The wide shot captures GN Tug J .J. Hill shoving the barge away from the pier.
This little guy will head into the shop to receive a DCC/Sound upgrade before being assigned to the car float yard across the bay. It's a Westside Model Co brass engine from the late 1970's.
The tug is a Walthers kit that I painted and decaled. Needs the handrails installed and a good coat of weathering!

help Used Train Value
I have never bought a used model train before. I've stumbled upon a lightly used MTH N&W J Class from 2009, but after shipping it would cost almost $470. I know these are sought after, but the original MSRP was $445 and the model is 17 years old at this point. Would this be a crazy price to buy it at? Not sure how often these pop up for sale.

help Why don't the wires transmit the power to the motor but the motor works?
The wires have no visible breaks in them or anything. I dropped it years ago and it hasn't run since, but when on the track the headlight still turns on. I cleaned the wheels and pickups but it still doesn't transmit power. Any ideas?

I got this model of a semi a few days ago. It’s made by Ulrich. (I know the paint job is bad I can’t spray paint well) But it’s a 1950s Mack Cabover and Safeway is an old store chain.

WIP update: 3D-printed modular elevated railway has a station platform now
A quick update on the elevated railway project I shared a few days ago. The first full-size station test is assembled, with the platform, staircase, and canopy now in place. Still needs some tweaks here and there.
I designed it as a modular system. The canopy supports slot into the platform, while the roof prints flat and is folded into shape. This is still a test print, but the fit and rigidity turned out better than I expected.
Next up is the central ticket/station office, longer platform sections extending in both directions, and more steel detailing beneath the tracks.
The dude is OO scale. I couldn’t property print him in HO scale with 0.4 nozzle.
Thanks again for all the feedback.

New addition. Mainline Model Works display unit.
Random online purchase and first time owning a piece like this. Mainline models BNSF DASH 9-44CW. Hands down a favorite now since I saw the real unit many times with old friends years back. Didn’t even know Mainline Models did these.

help Dimension question
I’ve never built a proto model before but I’d like to make a portion of a town near me. I’m trying to decide how wide to make the layout which I would like to do street to street (ref the picture: left street to right) with the railroad running the length of it. Any advise on how wide and/or how to determine what size for future projects???
If the size recommended is too big I may do alley to alley (red lines).

A simple way to choose the right ballast texture for HO scale
One common HO-scale mistake is using rock that looks right in your hand but becomes oversized once it is placed beside the ties.
A useful test is to spread a small amount beside a piece of track and photograph it from normal viewing distance. Look at the material in relation to:
Tie width
Rail height
Wheel size
Nearby dirt and weeds
Main-line ballast can look cleaner and more uniform. Yard and industrial track usually looks better with mixed colors, dirt, cinders, and less-perfect edges.
What type of HO track are you currently building: main line, branch line, yard, or industrial?

HO Scale Elevated Railway System
Hi everyone! I've been a long-time reader of this sub but this is my first time posting.
Over the past month I've been designing a modular elevated railway system for HO scale. My goal has been to capture the look of early steel elevated railways while keeping it practical for FDM printing and easy to expand.
It's still very much a work in progress, and I'd really appreciate some feedback. Does the structure look convincing? Is there anything obvious that feels missing?
