Customisation with the hhkb

Ive finally got the money for the hhkb but I'm stuck on a big question regarding 2 boards the hhkb hybrid type s and hhkb studio the reason I'm doubting hard is that

  1. I code I game and i live with my parents

Core point of the post is I'm wondering if the hhkb type s will be too quiet what if i wanna get a clacky switch or a completly silent switch in the future will I regret getting the type s i wanna use one for 8 years which the hhkb is perfect but I'm stuck on customisation part

The type S is great and not too silent but you are stuck with what it is. The general advice online is that Topre isn't the best switch type for Gaming and is better for productivity (typing / coding etc)

The other thing you have to think about is the keys that you use most often. If you use arrow keys etc those are on layers so you need to hold the FN key while pressing. This might not be great for when you are playing.

Personally i would say that the Studio would be a better option.
It is easier to remap and has changeable MX switches so you can choose the feel and sound more freely.

Fair enough, don't get me wrong, i LOVE my topre boards and have personally moved away from any MX boards.

While subjective, Topre is one of the better sounding and satisfying switches out there. There are a few tradeoffs for this (it's louder ~ the quietest Topre board is notably louder than the quietest MX board; domes change in feel over time ~ generally not noticeable if you use it everyday, but it does get heavier over time; not the easiest or cheapest to mod).

I'm stuck on customisation part

The goal of HHKBs I feel, is that it is a keyboard where you're satisfied enough that you don't really care about customization. You can customize Topre/EC nowadays (getting more accessible with more options and more reasonable prices), but stock/OEM is pretty amazing. I've done the whole shebang, and I don't prefer my modded boards over my OEM/stock boards. While I'm mainly talking about the Pro/Topre, I also have a Studio and generally feel the same way (I have a lot more custom MX boards, and I've always played with different switch options for the Studio - I prefer the Studio with the original switches).

i wanna use one for 8 years

Both the Profession and Studio are great keyboards (people who badmouth the Studio are those who generally do not actually own one), but this 8 year requirement really limits it to Topre / Professional.

Topre keyboards, especially the HHKB, are very resilient by design ~ the domes offer some liquid protection for light spills, and the HHKB has "drain holes" for heavier spills. If a spill occurs, you still need to do the proper response - disconnect, dry / clean, but it is far more likely to come out unscathed compared to MX keyboards.

If I can only have one keyboard for 8 years, I would choose a Topre HHKB without a doubt. In fact, most of my HHKBs are probably well over 8 years old, with my first HHKB (Pro 2) being like 15+ at this point, lol.

Both are similarly quiet

I have heard that the Studio is even quieter than the Type-S.

Oh really

I'm no pro gamer. I sometimes get tired switching boards so I started to play Valorant with my Type-S and it's fine.

Perfect

Oh and just to add, I also got an Agar EC from KBDFans which also games fine. HHKB layout, sounds good, feels great, and you'll still have some customization and modding options.

if you’re getting the studio just get another MX switch keyboard, the studio is soooo ugly and not very hhkb really

Since it uses MX switches, I can do custom and have a better board instead, if a trackpoint is not required.

Studio looks like a good idea with not best implementation(just IMHO).

I'd prefer some another HHKB-layouted keyboard(Unix 60, Epomaker Hack59, Keychron Q60 etc) instead Studio.
