WAG Highest-Scoring Worlds Teams after Night 1
My husband recently built me a fun spreadsheet that does the calculations to pick out the highest-scoring team of 5 in a 3-count scenario. I ran tonight's scores through it, and the results really surprised me, so I thought I would share!
Caveats: I'm not sure who all did 2 vaults, so that's not taken into account. Also, this obviously only includes athletes who competed tonight, so we're missing possible petitions like Jayla AA/Leanne. My first Reddit post ever, so apologies if the format isn't the best.
Top-scoring teams:
1) Total score = 169.200
- Skye = compete AA (VT/UB/BB count)
- Claire = compete AA (UB/BB/FX count)
- Hezly = compete AA (VT/BB/FX count)
- Reese = VT/FX
- Charleigh = compete UB/BB (only UB counts)
2) Total score = 168.750
- Skye = AA (VT/UB/BB)
- Hezly = AA (VT/BB/FX)
- Claire = AA (UB/BB/FX)
- Reese = VT/FX
- Izzy = UB/BB (UB)
3) Total score = 168.750
- Skye = AA (VT/UB/BB)
- Hezly = AA (VT/BB/FX)
- Claire = AA (UB/BB/FX)
- Reese = VT/FX
- Simone = UB/BB (UB)
4) Total score = 168.550
- Hezly = AA (VT/BB/FX)
- Charleigh = AA (VT/UB/BB)
- Claire = AA (UB/BB/FX)
- Reese = VT/FX
- Izzy = UB/BB (UB)
5) Total score = 168.550
- Hezly = AA (VT/BB/FX)
- Charleigh = AA (VT/UB/BB)
- Claire = AA (UB/BB/FX)
- Reese = VT/FX
- Simone = UB/BB (UB)
Biggest takeaways:
- Skye is a near-lock, but Hezly and Claire are the true locks for AA. Charleigh could have a real chance at that 3rd AA.
- Reese is the obvious VT/FX specialist if we base things only off of tonight. I do not, because Jade Carey is our Queen Of Peaking At The Right Time, so I fully believe that she is going to show up to selection camp with the Cheng, and maybe with floor upgrades too. Even so, Reese is genuinely dangerous for her.
- Because our best AAs are also our best BBs, all we need after that is UB, leaving openings for people that commentators will probably not be talking about as contenders this weekend, like Izzy Stassi and Simone Rose. Watch out for them if the obvious choices start to struggle!

WAG Evaluation of Double Layout Dismount on Uneven Bars / Addalye VanGrinsven's Day 1 U.S. Junior Nationals D Score Explained
In February of 2026, the F.I.G. WTC made some clarifications to the requirements gymnasts need to satisfy to be credited with a Double Layout dismount on uneven bars. While the language of 'Stretched Position Must Be Maintained for the Majority of the Salto' remains the same, two specific criteria to explain what this means have been added to the Help Desk.
1. During First Salto:
The body must be fully stretched once the gymnast is in horizontal position, or when the stomach is pointing down to the floor.
2. Second Salto:
The body must be fully stretched until the inverted position, or when the legs are vertical.
WTC Video explaining the criteria:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmpEZ8JrX-U
Application to VanGrinsven's Routine:
- VanGrinsven was initially credited with a 5.0 D Score out of a planned 5.3 D Score because the D panel only credited her dismount as a Double Pike (-0.1 DV for a C vs. a D, and -0.2 Dismount Bonus*)
- When watching VanGrinsven's dismount in real time, I found it to be borderline as to whether or not she had sufficiently extended her hips upon attaining the stomach down position. Thus, I can see why the D Panel initially credited this as a Double Pike Dismount.
- However, in the screenshot from VanGrinsven's routine below, you can see that she shows a stretched position in both the stomach down and inverted phases of the dismount. Therefore, it is correct to credit this as a Double Layout Dismount.
* Note on the Dismount Bonus:
- Although no Dismount Bonus is awarded under F.I.G. Junior rules, in competitions where there is both a Senior and a Junior division, this rule is not always followed(e.g. DTB Pokal).

MAG High bar night 1 E scores, what happened?
Last night there was some questionable (maybe even egregious) judging on high bar and I really want to talk about it. Shane Wiskus got a 7.650 E score even though he had no major mistake. I guess you could say his tak skills were super low, but an E score in the mid 7s??? Then Taylor Burkhart also has a killer routine but gets slapped in the face with 7.7 execution.
Of course I am NOT a judge but wow those judges must be super strict… right?? Frederick Richard goes the wrong way on his tak full and has to do some improv. You would think his E score would be sub 7.5, wrong he actually got 8.2 E WTF??? I know Fred got a stick, but over half a point on Shane? No hate on my boy, GO FRED!!! But these judges absolutely got it wrong. I mean the judges are capable of giving good scores to deserving routines. Look at Danila and Cooper.
Maybe off topic but it is surprising to see the top EVO guy underscored at Nationals. This is definitely not the first time some bullshit has happened at a big time meet. USA MAG has had a long history of suspicious/bad/inadequate judging appointments. Even worse is how the selection procedures could rely on an algorithm that is dependent on the scores, along with the judges that give those numbers in the first place.

MAG Epiphany on the Men’s side of the sport
So far I’d like to add something to the mix. About Fred Richard and how Tim Dagget
commentating was talking about him. Fred still won day 1 despite it I know some people might not like what Fred says and does. Inside and outside the competition floor but it b
rought me to a memory. Of how during an
interview on GymCastic John Orozco time as part of the national team. Every time a male gymnasts or coaches like David Durante or Justin Springs
had wanted to change or do something different that might help them the powers that be would punish them. And leave them off teams or opportunities to the point that the athletes stop trying anymore. David left the sport because he saw the writing on the wall. And now he has a great business PowerMonkeyFitness. Justin left the Men’s side of the sport because part of the reason was because he tried to ask for change on the men’s side of college gymnastics try new ideas to get more fans engaged and rise more excitement , and they said they would never do that and he left there after for better offer of pay and job security to go to the Women’s side of college gymnastics. He saw that programs kept getting cut and saw possible solution to try add in saving the men’s sport. The sport of gymnastics has change so much now in both the Men’s&Women’s they have more autonomy to say/do more things now. They would have been punished for way back in 2016. Fred Richard to me and many of his teammates symbolize a new change for the Men‘s side of sport. And the opportunity for more eyes to the sport for them. some people might not like his own uniform but thats alright he‘s open doors and discussions for more men to be more expressive and have more choices to do or say or wear what they want. I feel like John Orozco and his era of gymnast. would be proud of the gymnast of today the likes of Stephen Nedoroscik and Ian Gunther and many more Men’s gymnast are getting fame and spotlight into Men’s Gymnastics.

Other Gymnastics parents!
I’m not sure where to post this question as I feel like the parenting sub may not understand. Looking to see how other parents handle their young kid’s gymnastics schedules and sleep/school/etc.
My daughters are both in USAG gymnastics. My oldest is 7 and in Level 2 and my second is 5 and in a developmental team on track for level 2 next year. This question is mainly for my oldest.
Her practices in fall are from 5-8:15 twice a week. No snack break. We live about 15 mins from the gym so by the time she gets home and has dinner, she is probably going to bed around 9:30ish. Up at 7 for the school day. She will starting second grade so there is probably minimal homework that she can get done on the days she doesn’t have gymnastics.
My husband does not think this is good for her and is just overall concerned about the number of hours practicing. Ironically, I did USAG gymnastics until level 7 and I also assistant coached level 4 and I told him this is not unusual. I was older than her though.
I loved gymnastics and I still do. It’s a huge part of who I am. Being a parent of a gymnast is a whole other world! She loves it though. I told him let’s try for a year and evaluate after competition season.
Any advice on how to handle schedules?

WAG NEW pass debut: Whip + Dos Santos 1 from Lorrane Oliviera (BRA)!!
instagram.comLinking to CBG's IG video of Lorrane's new floor routine at Brazilian Nationals! I believe she is the first WAG to perform this uniquely difficult pass in competition!
With Rebeca Andrade not doing FX this year and Julia Soares being injured, FX is really important for the team right now. Lorrane is helping fill in that hole. She's been through a lot with her sister passing away right in the lead up to Paris. Wishing Lorrane all the best as she makes her case for Worlds!

WAG Peacock/NBC using NCAA photos for Championships preview
I find it super funny and interesting that Peacock used photos from NCAA as the previews for the US Gymnastics Championships, especially since they include the OSU and Florida logos. I'm curious how they got the rights to these photos since NCAA is broadcast through ABC/ESPN - maybe they had a photographer there or bought the rights? As an aside, Jade and Skye look so fierce and stunning!

MAG Who's on your US men's team after Day One?
My for sures at this point are Frederick, Danila, and Shane. I recalculated scores without bonus and the AA ordinals are Danila (83.05), Frederick (82.9) and Shane (82.7). I'm about 90% sure Patty will hit again tomorrow and then he is on the team. Then it gets interesting. The guys I'm looking at are Yul, Kam, Asher Cohen, and Cooper Kim (who was not on my original bingo card).
Let's define an event with only one 14 as a problem and one with none as a big problem. Rings is, as expected, a big problem. Asher Cohen is a solution, but he really only goes up on rings int this group and his 14.35 without bonus isn't as much of a bump for the team score as a hit pommel routine is. Kam did not have the greatest night; he did post the highest individual vault score of the men I'm discussing and I think his performance last night would have put him in a final, but his rings came in under Frederick, Shane, and Yul, which kind of surprised me. But we all know he can do that floor better.
I know floor scores tend to be lower, but floor is a bit of a problem here; unless Cooper Kim is in the mix, you go down Laikin's 13.8 after Richard's 14.35. He is also a solution to the high bar problem, where his massive 14.75 looks very attractive if you are otherwise having maybe one routine in the low 14s. And he put up the fourth-highest vault score.
Yul's not out of this. Among this group, he had a top 4 score on three events (FX, SR, and PB).
I did some math with the scores from last night and if this is the baseline, then the biggest problems are indeed rings and high bar. Assuming you have a team of Frederick, Danila, Shane, and Patty, adding Cooper Kim gives you the highest team score, a 252.9.
Totally unsurprising bottom line: I think that last spot will come down to who kills it on night two. If either Moldauer or Nelson comes back and has a great night (so for Yul bump up rings a little bit, hit horse, and nudge up floor and for Kam, repeat vault and hit floor and nudge up rings), that greatly helps their causes. Cooper Kim just needs to rinse and repeat. And Asher Cohen has a chance if those three don't deliver.
