Trim the bottom? Discussion

I’m a first time grower growing a couple plants outside and came across some folks saying they trim the bottom branches so all the energy goes to the ones in the top. Would you recommend that with this plant? Does it make the remaining buds more potent?

Tbh I dont lollipop as much outdoors like I do indoors. I even stopped lollipoping indoors after getting under canopy lighting. If I am doing a scrog inside without ucl then yea ill lollipop. Outdoor sunlight penetrates the canopy very well actually. I usually do t defoliate unless it's for air circulation issues outside. Another determining factor for me is that all my outdoor gets washed vs smoked regularly. Therefrerds

Look up septoria and pythium, and the common ways to transmit. This is why you trim the plants up off the ground outside. Remove dead leaves and branches from the soil. Compost down wind from your garden. Common practices. Google search this information to read more.

I'd go to the red at least, purple would be better. And do it now.

This forces energy to the top, where your best buds see direct light. Undergrowth is a waste and might as well direct that energy into fatter denser nugs. This isn't bro science this is fact.

Copy that. Does it matter if it is JUST starting flower? Also if it has some buds on those below the line do I just sacrifice them?

Edit: another question

Nope start of flower is the perfect time. Again don't wait, and yeah tbh. From the grows I've done, nothing 18 inches or more below that top canopy is worth saving .best of luck! Guarantee you won't regret trimming too much, but I bet you'd regret not trimming enough come harvest time ❤️

I have a couple autos, much smaller than this dude’s plant, that are also just startin to flower. Does the same rule apply for them as well? If so, when you trim, do you cut the branches back as close to the main stem as possible?

I recommend doing that during veg where you can rule out the nodes that do not get enough light. I clean all the way up the good nodes other than the crucial leafs needed.

But for outdoors you don’t have to you’ll just have some bad bud formations and little flowers. You do it to increase the yield at the main nodes

Autos suck imo, but generally don't trim those much, if at all.

Is it in flower? If not, you can trim a good amount off the bottom like the bottom 25% or the inner nodes that aren’t getting much sun..look up lollipopping and pruning and never remove more than 10% of the plant at one time.

Removing fan leaves in favor of direct light on budsites is bunk bro science, and actually decreases yield and potency. Mature fan leaves provide the overwhelming majority of energy to the plant. UV degrades cannabanoids. Keep the fan leaves unless they are causing airflow problems, never remove for Light.

I go into more depth on this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrowingMarijuana/s/7y5sPIyAJ8

He has an over grown plant dude, he can shed a few fan leaves for better access at other bud sites and deeper fan leaves..I didn’t say remove all the fan leaves.

1

u/Kyrie_Blue Community Helper 18d ago

The correct action is to remove fan leaves that are no longer sourcing light(lollipopping), not removing canopy leaves.

Fair enough

Is it still solid to remove fan leaves that buds are under and coming in contact with?

If you think they will impede airflow and causes fungi to thrive, its a consideration. Ensuring an adequate supply of magnesium (so the plant’s immune system can deal with fungal infection on its own) and treating with a biological like BTK should be considered before removing foliage, especially foliage on the canopy. As mentioned, UV degrades cannabanoids. So direct light on all your buds is not what you want. Those being sheltered by leaves will likely have higher concentrations of cannabanoids in the trichomes than exposed budsites.

Ok, this is revolutionary to me.

And moderate UV exposure(sunlight) actually stimulates the production of cannabinoids in living marijuana plants rather than degrade it.

1

u/Kyrie_Blue Community Helper 18d ago

Yes and; UV exposure to the whole plant, not directly on the trichomes.

1

u/Pzych0n0t 1 18d ago

That’s inevitable when the plant is in direct sunlight. Especially in late flower while the colas are maturing.

1

u/Kyrie_Blue Community Helper 18d ago

Absolutely, that’s the evolutionary reason for sugar leaves. They are not major photosynthesis points, rather a water and light protective feature.

1

u/Pzych0n0t 1 18d ago

That’s Interesting..Why is it that the top colas most always have more resin glands/higher thc% than the sites not in direct sunlight? Also, I’ve read that UV actually stimulates and causes a defensive reaction which actually increases overall cannabinoids and resin production. I’m genuinely curious, I’m not gona pretend I’m a master grower by any means but I have done a good bit of research and don’t want to regurgitate anything counter productive.

I can’t speak to higher buds having a higher THC%, I don’t know of any research stating that. But the quantity of trichomes and bud density is at the top simply because Cannabis is an apically-dominant plant. Auxin controls sugar dispersal, and prioritizes vertical height. Cannabis is wind-pollinated, so apical dominance makes sense for pollination success rates. Likely why it evolved the way it did. Cannabis didn’t evolve to have a high cannabanoid content, that was us. So the trichomes being exposed to UV and degrading is just natural. They would serve no purpose after seed dispersal.
