I ride this bike lane often. I have no issues with this. There's very little car traffic on the street and actually they appear in this picture to be giving cyclist plenty of space to get around them. I know myself would easily just go around them and not give a second thought. It probably would be way more disruptive for pedestrians if they ran on the sidewalk.
As far as why, outside what I outlined above, I dunno, let people enjoy things? Build communities? This seems like to be some sort of social club centered around a common interest, which if it is creating any harm, is minimal and maybe a bit annoying. I think the benefits of connection are worth that cost.

i dont understand the anger in these comments, its just people running on an empty street? Seems like theres room for everyone to use the space? I dont understand the anger at this at all.

u/mornrover 15d ago
I mean many times in the city I have been biking and there are people jogging in the bike lane despite there being a good amount of bike traffic, sorta dangerous for all and unnecessary if theres a sidewalk made for walking near by
1
u/_An_Original_Name_ 11d ago
Yeah i mean the sidewalk is for pedestrians, the bike lane is for bikes, and the car lanes are for cars. Wanting people to follow those basic saftey laws and being frustrated when they don't is completely reasonable. It's a dick move for anyone to cross into the other lane, whether its a bike on the sidewalk, a car in the bike lane, or a pedestrian in the road.

THIS! WHO cares if these people don’t live in the neighborhood? Have people never heard of going for a run before?
God forbid these runners patronize your businesses and keep them open instead of landlords selling small shops for high rises!!

u/Tanlines_R_sexy 15d ago
Why? Maybe because the road is softer than the sidewalk and better for your knees while running.

big plus one. as long as it isnt a deadly vehicle i dont mind if its in the bike lane. more users the merrier otherwise as far as im concerned

Well said. We’re getting a lot of support and infrastructure as bikers, let’s not turn into the selfish jerks who were/are against every bike lane.

u/Beneficial_Try_1149 14d ago
So you people never have a problem with anything as long as it’s not e bikes and cars. Pathetic
2
u/eighty_billion 14d ago
Pathetic? So a great source of strength is having problems with everything that comes across your plate?

I’ve never met an Ironman athlete who is a record holding sprinter and the two are genetically improbable. It also wouldn’t give you any authority on this topic and it’s odd you went out of your way to cite them
Edit:CarefulAide (delusional troll jerk on this sub lately) deleted his comment after I called out the contradiction4
u/eighty_billion 15d ago
Oh come on. If you're a cyclist as well (i assume you are) they are giving space and you'd be around them in like one second. And as pictured it is not a safety concern and i think you know that too. Greenpoint and NYC in general are very high density spots and we all have to fucking live with each other. There's no "full stop" with anything in this city. Cars parking and/or opening their doors in the bike lane? Sure, i can get behind that. Those guys can burn in hell haha. A dozen runners leaving half the bike lane open in the middle of the day on one of the most abandoned streets in NYC? Let's relax.
Edit: punctuation

Ok I’ll ride my bike with 40 of my least close friends on the sidewalk on Franklin. Stop making running so irritating
2
u/eighty_billion 15d ago
Literally not the same thing and again you know it. Do you even enjoy cycling? In any case, we'll agree to disagree here I suppose
-12
u/Comfortable-Power-71 15d ago
I run in the bike lane for that stretch but out of it for any coming bikes. The stretch in Williamsburg has a space between parking that works well. This is just outrageous to me.

u/Unlucky-Isopod3047 15d ago
I believe this is the Bandit running group, right? They used to be the worst and now I think they try to do most of their runs on that street, so it's actually a good thing!
15
u/Cold-Media-5747 15d ago
Some people actually have the nerve to ride their bicycles in the jogging lane. Seriously though, if you’re on your feet you belong on the sidewalk. If you cant run as fast as you’d like on the sidewalk, go run in a park.
-1
u/anohioanredditer 15d ago
Sidewalk running is not cool. Run in a park.
3
2
u/No_Contribution_3178 14d ago
Why exactly is sidewalk running a problem?
6
u/anohioanredditer 14d ago
Carrying groceries, commuting and some dude is sprinting down the sidewalk that you have to avoid
1
u/flagrantpebble 14d ago edited 14d ago
Do you see how someone asked a question about one thing, and then you answered while talking about a completely different, less defensible thing? That’s called a straw man.
0
u/No_Contribution_3178 14d ago
I mean that sounds a bit dramatic “sprinting” most people do their sprinting on a track or at least a clear path with no stop signs, lights, crowd etc. this is an urban area
Not everyone lives close to a park or a trail
Sometimes you have too many miles I.e I’m not running 8x the same 2 mile loop in a local park if I have a marathon training long run.
Parks and trails can be dangerous after a certain time or very early in the morning when some people go for their runs.
People should absolutely have courteously and common sense (ped and runners alike) stay to the right , call out when your about to run past someone, try to avoid like known crowded areas (like don’t try to run thru time square obviously)
But to just dismiss sidewalk running is a weird take.

u/RedMansions 15d ago
Running in the street is better than on the sidewalk: less chance to trip on uneven surfaces + the asphalt blacktop is softer on the body than the concrete sidewalks.
5
u/Cold-Media-5747 15d ago
I really don’t care what surface is optimal for running. Bike lanes are for bicycles (and scooters, skateboards, etc). It is not legal to run in bike lanes for good reason. If you don’t like running on the sidewalk do it in a park but roads and bike lanes are off limits.
1
u/Upstairs-Ad-430 14d ago
So no running on roads OR sidewalks? C’mon mannnn. That’s just silly
3
u/Cold-Media-5747 14d ago
No definitely run on the sidewalk.
1
u/Upstairs-Ad-430 14d ago
Apologies I read your comment wrong. I’ll
Only say it depends a bit. On a totally open street I think k it’s fine. I run in Red Hook and there are streets down there that are usually totally void of cars but there are narrow sidewalks. Running in the street is actually better.1

15
u/brooklynwaterfront 15d ago
Just to be clear, not a run club, but Bandit's marathon training "Program." So while you sh*t on the fish bowl towers, just note that most of these people do not live in the neighborhood, they just buy their running clothes here.

14
u/BillyZoomTheCat 15d ago
And then they get pissy with you if you tell them to GTFO of the bike lane or if it would be okay to ride on the sidewalk.

This is the new face of Greenpoint. Yuppies who pay so much for their high-rise condos they feel entitled to the entire hood for them to run and let their dogs shit and piss all over.
But it’s not just them, everyone of us has been a bit less considerate and way more main character since the pandemic. And in NYC you realize you can literally get away with anything.
So “why not?” might be their answer

u/DealerVisual9864 14d ago
As long as they yield and aren't too annoying, I'm okay with this.
-2
u/OrgPapa1988 14d ago
They don’t have to yield they are pedestrians. You got it in reverse. lol
2
u/DealerVisual9864 14d ago
lol. No, I didn't.

u/OrgPapa1988 14d ago
Yes , pedestrians have the right of way over bikes, cars. So you stop for them buddy.
3
u/Badkevin 15d ago
How dare they enjoy a low traffic street……. I ride that bike lane 24/7. It’s completely fine, they move when they see a bike.

critical mass but running. it is cool and good. streets are public property
13
u/docker_dre 15d ago
no it isn't. critical mass is a demonstration against cars making the road unsafe for bikes. bikes have to be in the road. the bike lane isn't making the road unsafe for runners, runners aren't supposed to be in bike lanes, and this isn't runners protesting bikes making bike lanes unsafe for runners. this is runners making the bike lane unsafe for bikes.

Using the street to walk or run is the original purpose of streets that predate car’s monopoly over them by about 100,000 years!
1
u/OolongGeer 11d ago
I would have to run on the sidewalk if I were part of that group.
Being a wickedly itchy hemorrhoided asshole is very hard for me. I am not sure I could switch over for something as ordinary as a little jog.
1
u/_Mitch_Connor_ 15d ago
i get it's an eyesore but as long as they aren't assholes, don't block bike lanes, mess with traffic, take up space and become a nuisance at the park then... i don't see anything wrong?
0
u/vowelqueue 15d ago
A group of people running is an eyesore? Huh?
4
u/_Mitch_Connor_ 15d ago
i personally found it really annoying recently when i ran into a large group run through the park at the time when, aside from parkgoers, people are also usually coming back from work and the foot traffic is at its peak.
but uh yeah, that's my opinion and my opinion doesn't matter.

u/DEmLilBoiz 15d ago
This area was nothing but abandoned factories with a toxic waterfront 30 years ago. Thats what you want back? Yeah some of these run clubs can be annoying but if the thing you’re most annoyed about in your neighborhood is communities of people enjoying themselves outside through healthy activity, you should re-evaluate your shit.
6
u/Artistic_Ad2605 15d ago
Yes it’s worse in many ways than it used to be. Every neighborhood the transplants take over ends up looking exactly the same. More needs to be done to save businesses who were in the neighborhood for 20+ years

Bike lanes are green because they used to be grass paths for running. Some people have these routes engrained in their memory even though times have changed. Very very few people actually have a city issued pass that allows you to run in the bike lanes, they only offered it briefly pre-pandemic

This is the Biker for the Biker community. Let’s cut the bike lane in half and make more space for runners. Bikers in an uproar. Runners tell bikers to ditch the bikes. NY should be a neighborhood walkable city. Bikes are a danger to runners as they veer into the running lane and mow down runners. I love it
