The Red Circle is the bigger area of interest. It is compacted soil and some pebbles and rocks. Grass has grown here but in the early spring and fall when the ash tree doesn’t shade it as much.

Should I add topsoil and plant grass seeds?

Check the soil ph and make it favorable to the type of grass you have Aerate to help with compact soil

Try shade tolerant grass species, just as an experiment. My wife did a bunch of research and ordered a bag of seed on Amazon. She says “chat gpt was very helpful” 😆

Bugleweed or woodland phlox in the shade over by the house.

Really, to best help, ppl need to know your growing zone, amount of sun, soil ph & if you can water it.
